She's trying out. Tony Scott wanted her to get into the role because he wasn't so swept away with her acting in Crossroads, so she is taking it to the extreme.
She's always been ugly IMO. She also has a bad head shape, she's ugly as sin now more then ever before.
Talk about desperate. If that's true and she cut her hair off before she got the part, she sucks as an actress and couldn't get a real script without doing something this extreme.

Well I'm not going to bash her now, after she cut her hair. That seems kind of insensitive. She used to be quite attractive (eg look at her when she hosted SNL), but she changed.
