Hold on to yourselves, and peek into Jim's Crystal Ball. Jim Trotter of the San Diego Union-Tribune suggests that Matt Millen's willingness to shed himself of Joey Harrington is such a forthright move will qualify him as NFL Executive of the Year.

The NFL season doesn't begin for another six months, and the voting for individual awards won't take place for several months after that, but you can go ahead and pencil in Detroit Lions President Matt Millen for Executive of the Year.

Earlier in the week, Millen showed strength by finally admitting he had a weakness for quarterback Joey Harrington. When most everyone around him was calling for the release of Harrington, Millen stood behind the player he personally selected with the third pick in the 2002 draft. Millen's blind allegiance contributed greatly to the departure of head coach Steve Mariucci last season, as Mariucci and Millen were known to butt heads over whether Harrington could be an effective player.

However, Millen recently let it be known that he plans to sever ties with Harrington, who is as unpopular with his teammates as he is with the public. Some players were put off by his aloof attitude, others by his lack of production. Harrington reportedly forced the team's hand recently when he told the coaches and front office he wants out of Detroit.

hahaha how long has Harrington been with the Lions 4 years?

I think by the time 4 years is up you know if you have a productive QB or not i'm glad Millen has enough sense to realize that Joey H has not been productive. I dont think cutting a bad QB will make him GM of the year haha thats pretty funny that someone actually mentioned that in a newspaper... the guy should be fired. And maybe the editor will be made Editor of the Year.

That's harsh. The phrase (from Office Space) No talent A$$ clown may be more appropriate. LOL.

He deserves it. How many people can take over a 9-7 team that just missed the playoffs, and turn them into what the lions are now. a 5 win a year team. Now, certainly i can understanding taking a step back. But, how about a step forward every once in a while. Millen = loser

I don't think a mistake he made four years ago (No matter how HUGE) can be held against him towards this year's award.

Of course Rod Marinelli had more to do with the "Princess" being run out of town than Millen in my opinion.

I expect Marinelli to write a book like this one in a couple years.

Joey Harrington isnt the only reason the Lions sucked for four years sure hes a part of it but u cant scapegoat him for the reason u are cellar dwellers. the defense was terrible they never had a good rb i mean no one was really that great on the team as a whole. Whos fault is that? Millen hes an idiot i dont understand how the owner still lets him stay. And i can't believe after 1 decent offseason you are ready to give him Exec of the Year. Why because of Kitna and McCown thats funny

You can't draft a WR 3 years in a row, draft one linebacker, then suddenly become the GM of the year. I hope for the Lions sake that Millen continues making relatively good moves this year. Unfortunately, one good year will not erase his long history of being a very, very poor GM.

All I did was share an article by Jim Trotter of the San Diego Union-Tribune. He's the one who claimed Millen should be Executive of the Year just for releasing the "Princess"!

This is just one example of what people outside of Michigan think of Harrington.

If you add the Coaching Staff Millen hired and the high grades he recieved for his F.A. signings and his draft ... he may really have a decent shot at the award. Of course they'll have to win.

I guess since it is the GM of the year award he may have a shot - that is if people can forget the past few years. I just don't see how getting rid of Harrington a few years after the rest of the league thought that Harrington should be let go deserves an award. Doing the obvious isn't worthy of an award.

The Title is play to win, eh? Shouldn't it be Exercise in futility?

BTW, Saban has already written a book.

Millen is the farthest from Executive of the year. An excutive of a year has to go to the playoffs and the Lions wont go this year and havent been since the barry sanders days
