<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The New York Times reported Tuesday the Lakers are the "front-runners" in the Jason Kidd Trade Sweepstakes, and the Bergen (N.J.) Record reported the "rampant rumor" Kidd might go to the Lakers "in a package for Jordan Farmar, Aaron McKie, Kwame Brown, Chris Mihm and a couple of (draft) picks." Not surprising, the Nets are said to want Andrew Bynum instead of Brown. Would I trade Farmar and Bynum in a deal to get Kidd? No way. Could Kobe Bryant and Kidd play well together and spark a playoff run? That's what the Lakers' brass has to decide before Thursday. The Lakers haven't announced it yet, but the word is Phil Jackson has agreed to a five-year contract extension that includes a provision for moving into the front office at the appropriate time. Owner Jerry Buss is hopeful the Zen Master will be able to attract marquee players in his new role once he leaves the bench. That also sounds like a reduced role for Mitch Kupchak.</div> Source
5 year extension??? HELL YES!!!!!! I was getting worried that Phil was gonna walk at the end of the season. But 5 more years of the Zen Master? HELL YES!!!!!!!

Damn. What if Phil Jackson takes Mitch Cupcake's job as a GM? lol. When Phil Jackson steps down from coach, our team will be in good hands. Phil Jackson's protegy, Brian Shaw, also former Laker, will take over and run the triangle offense. Sweet!
I don't know how Phil Jackson is as a GM, but just the fact that he will be get a 5-year contract extension as coach is really good news for the Lakers.

He already advises Kupchak on moves as it is, and plus, it's not like he can be WORSE than Kupchak typically is.
I think this is bad news for the Laker fans..PJax is an overrated and mediocre coach these days. Seems like he is just there for the money and doesn't have the competitive edge and the will to win anymore.

PJax might jump around the sidelines and show a lot of emotions during a game, but he's a fantastic coach. His approach is different than most coaches in the league. He believes in coaching during practice and not during the game. The game is the platform for his players to take what they've learned in practice and execute on the court. I don't think many coaches could get the this type of production out of the Lakers roster.

Phil Jackson is one of the top 5 coaches of all time, he's by no means mediocre. His coaching style, while different, most certainly works. There is no other coach in the league that could get this much out of such a young Lakers team. No other coach in the NBA could have led them to 47 wins last year, and I'm pretty sure no other coach would be able to turn Kobe into the leader he's been this season. In my book, PJax, at this point in time, is still the best coach in all of the NBA.
I don't know how sure this extension will be if we miss the playoffs, which I think is highly likely with how we've been playing. I don't think Phil wants to handle the youth and immaturity of this team.

I know he's supposedly one of the greatest coaches of all time. Even if the players aren't executing it on the court and with all these injuries, you just can't coach a team to lose 6 games in a row. PJax does need to get a share of the blame for the team's recent debacles.

It's not Phil Jackson's fault players aren't playing defense. It's not his fault nobody (except Kobe and Turiaf) care about winning. A coach can only do so much. The rest relies on the players. If the players just don't show any energy to compete, then what's there for the coach to do? Also, out of the last 6 games we lost, 4 or 5 of them were extremely close. Saying Phil Jackson is overrated is completely ridiculous. The Lakers have overachieved this whole season, and if not for the injuries, we would have a much better record than we do now. You give any other coach this roster, the Lakers would be 8th or 7th seed right now at best
