Or, more specifically, he has told Los Angeles general manager Mitch Kupchak not to call unless he is prepared to include New Jersey native Andrew Bynum in any deal; or to go out and involve a third team that could deliver a package of players that would make the Nets take his next call. "That's probably the truth," Thorn confirmed, matter-of-factly. </div> Source
At least Mitch is trying. It's a shame that Thorn isn't an idiot and he won't trade Kidd for nothing.
I don't see how Mitch "was" trying here. He had all the leverage in the world. Nobody wants Kidd, he's too old to get paid $40 mil. Nobody else was offering the cap room we were. Mitch is an idiot GM and I pray for the day that he is removed from office. Another missing of the playoffs or a first round disaster should do it. This team is terrible without Luke and Kwame and from what I've heard, Luke is still about a week away (AM 570) and Kwame is still at least a month away.
<div class="quote_poster">Bobcats Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">^ LOL! What exactly was so jaw-dropping about the Lakers offer?</div> Seriously. You guys were planning to give us a bunch of scrubs, and as you can see we aren't ready to rebuild. Had like 3 injured players in the deal. If we want to trade Kidd, I'm sure we will get better offers during the offseason. I don't see Kidd's value really dropping anyway.

NOBODY wants him.
Uhm, the Lakers were the only team trying to get him. The Clippers and the Suns were smokescreens. Nobody is going to give up anything respectable for a 34 year old getting paid 20 million a season, that's hog wash.

Cavs, Clippers, Lakers, Nuggets, Suns, Golden State all wanted to get him, but they didn't have the necessary pieces to go through with it.

So basically that means the Lakers had the best offer? Because if they didn't, I don't see why the Nets were talking with the Lakers for so long I don't see why Thorn didn't pull the trigger. Kidd is only going to get older, and in the off-season, his value will get even lower. By then, teams will have lost all their expiring contracts, so the deals may be even harder to make. Not to mention in the off-season Vince Carter will most likely bolt to Orlando. I don't really see any positive aspects about the Nets for pulling out the deal. Maybe they'll make the playoffs as the 8th seed? But who cares? They're probably just going to get sweeped in 4. Jason Kidd is also only going to get older....

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Brian:</div><div class="quote_post">Exactly. So basically that means the Lakers had the best offer? Because if they didn't, I don't see why the Nets were talking with the Lakers for so long</div> Not necessarily. There's always the off-season, when GM's have a better sense of where their team is heading and are more open to trades. The trade deadline is usually only has contending teams looking for a boost before the playoffs, whereas every team addresses their needs in the off-season. The Nets may have been talking to the Lakers because they had the best current offer, but ultimately decided that it was worth waiting a little longer to start retooling. <div class="quote_poster">Quoting Brian:</div><div class="quote_post">I don't see why Thorn didn't pull the trigger. All the teams may lose their expiring contracts, but then there's a whole new set (the players who have 2 years remaining right now). They can always do a sign-and-trade with Vince and if they don't, they'll have a hell of a lot of cap room to work with. People are acting like Kidd is a senior citizen or something. The dude may not be in his prime anymore, but is still one of the top 2 PG's in the league. He ages slowly and could easily still be playing at the age of 40. Teams will never lose interest in a player of his calibre and the Nets will field offers in the off-season, if they still want to trade him. 3 months won't make that much of a difference on Kidd's value around the league. Chances are they'll find better ones that the Lakers offered, too.

Maybe during the offseason they will be become more desperate and offer more for him. They know now that Thorn won't take any small offer. And if they aren't worried about his age now, why would they be worried about it 4-5 months later?
Odds of a team trading for Kidd in the summer are even more remote. Just look at the recent history of older players, with hugh contracts, and how they ended up. Penny Hardaway - waived Jalen Rose - waived Tim Thomas - waived Allen Iverson - traded for below his talent Grant Hill - barely producing for the Magic Chris Webber - waived Eddie Jones - waived These players were either waived, bought out, or traded for far less than what they are worth. Teams are reluctant to make a blockbuster summer deal, because there are a lot more opportunities for them to address needs. 1. The draft 2. Free agency 3. Player development There are more cost effective alternatives for a team to pursue during the summer.
Yea, but none of those players were worth anything close to the amount of money they were being paid, except for Iverson (and he publicly demanded a trade). Kidd will have more value and garner much more interest than all of them, because he's still worth his contract and his impact is well documented.

There's only a handful of teams who could use Jason Kidd. Just go through the list of teams who adding Kidd puts them into title status, who can also afford to take on his salary, is willing to trade away key players for him, and who doesn't have a qualified PG already. It's a very short list, and it will be one team shorter this summer because the Lakers won't be in a position to acquire him.
I should clarify. Kidd's not worth as much money as he used to be, but he's nowhere near the liability (cap-wise) that the aforementioned players were. Ultimately, I think the scarcity of premier distributing PG's and his impact on players around him will be enough for team's to justify taking on his salary. Off the top of my head, I think Boston, Orlando, Cleveland, and the Clippers have the pieces and the needs to go after him. I'm sure there'll be more after teams beginning signing free agents, drafting, and changing their rosters over the off-season.
