With 5:06 to go and frustrated at having just called a timeout moments earlier to chide second-year center Andrew Bynum for holding the ball too long and having it stolen, Jackson again barked at Bynum for not getting a rebound and setting up a second-chance basket for Portland. Bynum, seated on the bench while Jackson stood a few feet away, yelled back in disagreement.

Bryant re-entered at the timeout when Jackson and Bynum argued, but by then the Lakers were down, 98-89.

“Some of the young guys defensively didn’t stand up very well,” Jackson said.

Bynum, the gifted youngster whom the Lakers have refused to trade despite star-quality offers coming in, had been the subject of pregame complaints by Jackson.

In explaining why he looks forward to Kwame Brown’s return from injury when he will split minutes with Bynum, Jackson said Bynum wastes half his minutes each game by just floating around: “He doesn’t assert himself.”

Bynum had eight points and seven rebounds in 31 minute, and Brian Cook and Bynum picked up two fouls in the first quarter.

Despite emphasizing the team aspect of defense in recent days, the Lakers allowed Portland to make 10 of its first 14 shots (71.4 percent) and finish at 59.7 percent from the field.

Bryant scored 25 points, but shot 8 for 22 against a Portland defense committed to stopping him. The Lakers got smooth offense from Maurice Evans (a career-high-tying 23 points) and Smush Parker (18 points, eight assists), but faulty defense from both, too.

“We’re just going through a little bit of a communication problem and maybe a little bit of a chemistry problem,” Lamar Odom said.

“That’s why we look so bad on defense. We kind of leave each other out there exposed. I think it’s kind of embarrassing to let a team shoot 60 percent.”

The Lakers have a chance to make this their rock bottom, at least, because Friday brings the NBA’s worst team, the Boston Celtics, to town.

Then again, the Lakers have struggled against the league’s bottom-feeders all season, and Portland joined Charlotte, New Orleans and New York as fledgling teams to have beaten the Lakers twice this season.</div>

I remember that play specifically, it wasn't Bynum's fault the ball was stolen. The blame should have been placed on Jordan Farmar and Sasha Vujacic. Neither of them warned Bynum the guard was coming from the weakside to strip the ball. Farmar went for a backdoor cut, and lead his defender right into Bynum, without screaming that the double was coming. Neither did Sasha, who could see the play develop from the top of the key.

Bynum doesn't have eyes in the back of his head, the players need to communicate more on both ends.

PJax needs to emphasize getting Bynum the ball more. 3 FGA's in 31 minutes for Bynum is ridiculous.

He loses the ball too easily when he got double team. Or he will just pass it out to the PG. He should either do a quick turnaround and go to the basket or look for an open player and pass. Keep moving!!

Shape Phil was right. Although Bynum doesnt have eyes in the back of his head he knows to make the quick move after the catch. And if he wants to hold the ball down low, he needs to learn to stop holding it at waist level. You hold the ball high so the small guys cant strip the ball without fouling.
Thats the basics and I think thats why Phil was frustrated. Stupid mistake after stupid mistake not just on bynum but most of the team F'ed up but bynum was the straw that broke the camels back.

He didn't see the double coming, this can't be blamed on him, like Shape said Sasha and Farmar both failed to yell the double was coming from the blind side and Sasha saw the damn play develop.

I'm so sick of this team's failure to communicate, what's that quote from Cool Hand Luke? You See, what he have here is a failure...to communicate. Sasha seems the be the biggest idiot when it comes to lack of communication followed by Odom.

Should Bynum be mouthing off? No, but he needs more plays. He was really active from the start and had a monster putback dunk and great positioning all night, yet the guards looked to him and swung it to the weakside.

With the injuries and how long they'll be out, I think it's very believable that we'll slip out of the playoffs into the lottery. If that's the case, I'd expect Phil to threaten to retire if Mitch doesn't make a move.

He wasn't holding the ball down low, he had just received the entry pass, and Farmar did a backdoor cut, but his defender went after Bynum instead of following Farmar on the baseline.

PJax actually ripped Sasha on the sideline after that play because he didn't alert Bynum.

Bynum does need to be more aware on the court, and make decisive moves, but in that particular play he was put in a bad position by Farmar and Sasha.
