Quote:

Jason Kidd. With the New Jersey Nets no longer a contender in the East ? never mind a franchise with championship aspirations ? Kidd was deeply disappointed, sources say, that president Rod Thorn didn't find a way to move him to the Los Angeles Lakers.

While publicly indifferent to a proposed trade out of Jersey, Kidd, who turns 34 next month, was privately eager to take a shot in Los Angeles with Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson. Besides the injuries that have gutted Kidd's Nets, divorce proceedings with his wife Joumana have been playing out nastily in the New York tabloids. <font size=""4"">All in all, Kidd knows his trade value will never be higher than it was prior to the deadline and still Thorn couldn't find a suitable deal.

Danny Ferry. The Cavaliers' general manager tried desperately to give LeBron James a point guard, but his bids for Bibby and Kidd were futile. Ferry tried everything in the final 48 hours to get Bibby, but nothing worked. Around the league, he searched for a trade partner to get the Sacramento Kings the young players, picks and expiring contracts they wanted.

Suddenly, James is under fire this year for looking a little lethargic and a little less motivated, and his ego is too massive to ever agree with that truth. Count on this: When the Cavs flame out in the playoffs, James won't be looking at himself but rather a front office that didn't get him the help he needed.

Mitch Kupchak and Phil Jackson. Under no circumstances should the Lakers ever have traded Andrew Bynum for Kidd, but the Lakers needed something to happen at the trade deadline. On a six-game losing streak, the longest of Jackson's career, it was incumbent on Kupchak to find a bench player ? perhaps a rebounder, a perimeter defender ? who could give this team a lift.

Talks with the Portland Trail Blazers about center Jamaal Magloire never reached consummation, league sources said. Once, the Lakers were considered in that second tier of Western Conference teams with the Houston Rockets (with Yao Ming) and Utah Jazz, but you have to wonder now if the Lakers have slid down into the Denver Nuggets' shaky neighborhood.

Kidd's value is still high enough to be traded next season.

Wrong. There wasn't a decent offer on the table for Kidd, simply because nobody wants a 34 (going to be 35) year old PG with cracked ribs and a bad back, whose getting paid 20 million a season. He does nothing for rebuilding teams and contending teams aren't going to give up jack for him. Thorn won't see a better deal.

Oh as if he's injury prone. Kidd has missed only two games since 2004, and I don't believe any major player has missed less than that. So are all those players a liability too?

And your just bitter that Thorn didn't want to take the junk you were offering.

There wasn't a decent offer on the table, because teams were hesitant to give up draft picks in arguably the best draft since 2003. That offer really wasn't much at all. Anyone can pick up cap space and an injury-prone post defender for the 2nd best PG in the league. There'll definitely be better offers over the summer.

The only bitter person appears to be Jason Kidd. The Lakers aren't hurt by not acquiring Kidd. They went for a homerun by trying to land Kidd and make use of their expiring contracts. The Lakers are going to make the playoffs with or without Kidd.

Not bitter at all, Thorn has got to be the biggest moron in the deal. Asking for Bynum when the Lakers made it clear from the start that he was untouchable. He wasted the entire deadline trying to convince himself he could get Bynum.

What are you talking about Mercury? Kidd missed two games this year, two last year, 14 in 05-05, 13 in 03-04, and two in 02-03. Kidd hasn't played a full season since 2001-2002.

Just so you guys know, I'm bitter as well. I want Kidd to come to the Lakers and have a chance to win something. He isn't getting anywhere on the Nets, and next season won't be spectacular either. The Nets are in a rebuilding stage, whether they would like to admit it or not.

I'm just trying to point out a reason, as to why Thorn didn't complete the deal.

Lakers will make the playoffs, but I hope your not expecting them to win it either. Their not an elite team like Dallas, SA, or Phoenix, but with Kidd it might have helped. That's why the Suns wanted to block the deal.

The Sun deal was a smokescreen, D'Antoni called trading Raja crazy.

Before all the injuries, the Lakers were third in the west (or 4th) and playing magnificent ball. This team, if healthy, can easily be last year's Miami and make a strong playoff push. Note, I didn't say win it all, I said a strong playoff push.

Thorn isn't a moron, and has had a very successful career. You knowing selecting Jordan in the draft, and multiple other moves you might know. He figured he might make the Lakers bite and take up his offer, unfortunately this time he was wrong.

I made slight mistake, with the games, but he has missed only around 4-5 games since 2004. I read in an article that I'm trying find, that he has missed less games in than most superstars since '04

Yea of course he's going to say that now, but we don't exactly know what was happening 2 or so days back. Maybe it was a smokescreen, or maybe it wasn't

The Lakers were willing to include their draft pick this year, the 2009 pick, and $3Million in cash.

They won't get better offers in the summer for Kidd unless a contending team suffers a major injury to their starting PG.

A team that was willing to give up more for Kidd, would have done so before the trade deadline.

As it stands now, the Nets will miss out on two first round picks, and the opportunity to tank this year in talent rich draft class.

This no-trade hurts the Nets more than it hurts the Lakers. In the offseason, Vince Carter will most likely walk, Jason Kidd will only get older, and like most said, I don't think his stock will get any higher. The Nets had a chance to aquire 2 first round picks in a very deep draft, but they declined. All this means is that the Nets will have to wait even longer to rebuild, which isn't a good thing (hence the 76ers). This season, even if the Nets make the playoffs, they will be a lower seed and will most likely get eliminated in 4 or 5 games. The same thing will happen next season. I for one, hope the Kidd gets traded to a contending team, so he can win his ring. Whether or not he will come to the Lakers is another story, but I doubt he's going to win anything anytime soon with the Nets

This is all I was suggesting all along. Not eve a rebounder just a perimeter defender.
Kidd's value will definitely decrease because he will less motivated to play in NJ and I bet anything he might even demand a trade in the summer; therefore accepting a decent trade.
Maybe the Lakers will get a chance at Kidd this time with the trade we offered.
BTW , this is the second time we tried to get Kidd and we did not succeed.

For those who say that the Lakers aren't hurt by not acquiring Kidd is BS. Sure the Lakers still has Bynum to keep. But keep this in mind, not moving forward is just the same with taking a step back. The Lakers could have had a better shot at the title with Kidd. Like I said before, L.A. won't win with Smush Parker or even Farmar at the point. As for Thorn, true he's not a moron. But his greed regarding the trade will haunt him. Again Jason Kidd has been robbed. And this time it was Thorn who robbed him. Fact is, the Lakers suffered more than the Nets. Why? Because the Lakers could have had a Kobe-Kidd backcourt. The Lakers missed out on a chance of what could have been one of the best backcourt in history. The Nets are on the verge of rebuilding anyway. What Thorn missed out was the opportunity to have more room to work with for the rebuilding process. The Lakers suffered, the Nets suffered but ultimately it's Kidd who suffers the most.

Having a Kobe-Kidd backcourt at the cost of trading both your centers (Kwame & Bynum) makes absolutely no sense at all. Let's not forget the Lakers play in the Western Conference, which is dominated by big men. The Lakers wouldn't have a pray in the post season with Cook and Turiaf being the only options at center.

The Lakers did not suffer more than the Nets. The Nets had a chance to speed up their rebuilding process, but they chose not to. I'm not saying that's good or bad, but this doesn't really hurt the Lakers in any way. At first, I was obviously disappointed we couldn't get Jason Kidd, but it's not like we lost someone valuable on our team. Like shape said, in order to get Kidd, we would have to lose our post presence in Kwame Brown. Kwame will play a key role in the playoffs with his defense. I'm not saying Kwame Brown is better than Jason Kidd. I'd trade Kwame for Kidd in a hearbeat, but the fact is, the Lakers didn't gain anything, nor did they lose anything. You also have to take in consideration that our 2 starters are close to returning, so it doesn't really hurt us that much

I'm not blaming the Lakers for failing to get Kidd. In fact, I thought that what was offered to Thorn should have been enough considering the direction Thorn wants to go. But I don't agree that Kidd is not worth trading for even for both Kwame and Bynum. But in the situation that the Nets are in, Thorn should have let Kidd go and made the deal (even without Bynum). Like I said, Thorn's greed was evident. He wanted to have his cake and eat it to. Thorn robbed the Lakers of what could have been "showtime 2", and he cheated Kidd out of a chance to win a title. Given that it was he's perogative to change his mind or turn down the deal. It was a situation were it was beyond business. It was respect. And Thorn showed none of it. Jason Kidd has given his all to the Nets organization. Jason Kidd made New Jersey one of the elite teams in the league. Thorn very well knows that they no longer have a shot at winning a title once they rebuild even with Kidd around. He should have made the deal out of respect to Kidd. Jason Kidd doesn't deserve to be on a rebuilding team. And he sure damn doesn't deserve to end his career baby sitting Marcus Williams.

I agree AMS_Ice, it was bush league what Thorn pulled in regards to the Lakers and Jason Kidd. Prior to signing his lucrative deal to stay in New Jersey, Kidd was close to becoming a San Antonio Spur. Kidd stayed with the Nets out of loyalty and also made sure the team was going to spend money to retain their key players. Thorn should have extended the courtesy to Jason Kidd.

I think there's going to be overwhelming pressure for Thorn to get a deal done in the offseason, and he's going to end up getting less for Kidd.

I really hope he ends up a Laker. I truly believe that Kobe and Kidd will complement each other very well. Kobe has matured a lot the past two seasons. And to be honest, I didn't like the young and cocky Kobe. But I couldn't deny his talent. And with his new attitude towards the game, I now have nothing but respect for the guy. Kidd and Kobe are two of the hardest working players in the league today. I hope the Lakers open the next season with Kidd at the point.
