Cutting Wilkinson puts bite in Marinelli's bark

New head coach Rod Marinelli has stressed all along that he wants players who want to play football and are passionate about it and Dan Wilkinson simply didn't fill that role.

Wilkinson played well at defensive tackle last year, but he's been talking about retirement for the entire off-season and it was pretty clear that he wasn't thrilled about the more intense and physical practice habits of the new coaching staff. Also, and just as importantly, the Lions' new defense requires more speed and versatility from the tackles while Wilkinson is more of a stay-at-home type player.

The Lions made an attempt to trade Wilkinson but, knowing there was very little market for him at this stage, decided to cut ties with him so both parties could move on. This was a unique situation; don't expect any other players to be released.

What? Are the Lions are so bad they get to carry more than 53 players on their regular season roster? ROFL.

Matt Millen is still trying to figure out what tampering means, so I think asking him to keep up with how many players he has on the roster may be a reach.

"How many years have I been GM of the Lions? This many!!!"

Defensive Tackle is a position that every team seems to be trying to upgrade every year. This year, there's about 700lbs of beef out there in the form of Dan Wilkinson and Grady Jackson. Imagine those two guys clogging up the middle on the same team!

    <u>Wilkinson could sign with Dolphins</u>
The Miami Herald says Dan Wilkinson is considering playing for the Dolphins this season. Do you think Nicky Saban has promised to not work him too hard if he signs? LOL!

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>June 10, Miami Herald: Defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson visited the Dolphins on Thursday, and the team could sign him to replace or compete with nose tackle Keith Traylor. Wilkinson, who owns a contracting business in Washington, had talked about retiring after being released by Detroit last month.

However, Wilkinson also is considering playing for a contender this season, such as the Dolphins or Cincinnati.</div>

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Miami Herald)</div><div class='quotemain'>? Word is defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson might eventually sign with Miami but has reservations about going through the rigors of a full training camp. His agent said the only team he's talking to is the Dolphins.</div>

I def would not call Saban a soft coach, i don't see how you can disrespect a guy who took a 4-12 team and turned them into a competetor his first year, i can only wish Mike McCarthy can do what Saban did.

And I'm guessing the change of scenery will be good for all three.

Gee. ZM is serving up his own brand of pithiness again. I keep waiting when he's gonna ask, "would you like fries w/ that?". Seriously, I'm surprised he keeps trying to super size his insults.

    Why is Millen getting canned?

p.s. Ford's can't manage vehicle company or a football team. LOL.

No doubt ... In Harrington's case it may have saved his life. Marinelli had no use for a player with Wilkinson's work ethic. Goodman I like, I think he's a solid Nickle Back with potential. He stays out of trouble too. A nice pick up in my opinion.

Was that so hard to say something nice about Joey?

It appears that Harrington & timing offenses don't go together and that's what Martz's & the WCO (somewhat) are based on.
