I took spanish classes for 6 years, got an A in every semester except the last, which was why I quit damn stupid teacher...

In HS I took three years of Spanish, just because most of the colleges I was applying to required three years of a foreign language, but I hated every minute of it and have since forgotten all of what I 'learned.'</div> I never agreed with this either, because a person should not be forced to learn a language just to meet the curiculum. You really have to want to learn the language in order to appreciate it and make use of it. I remember in a Poli-Sci class I took, the professor basically broke it down that well-rounded students is a catchy phrase, but a crock. Every department fights for money and doesn't have the students best interests in mind. Department funding is all based on quotas, so each department fights to have their subjects as pre-requisites. I think language should be expanded to music and even programming. Learning to read and write music is no different than trying to learn a new language, same goes for programming.

Also it is best to get children to learn languages at a young age. Usually once they can grasp basic words and knowledge. The earlier the better.
The main problem I found with mandatory language courses is that they don't teach so that people can actually use the language. They usually have a limited time frame (up to Grade 9 for us), so there's no way they can really make students understand the language properly. Instead, they tend to teach simple grammatical rules and phonics. I thought French class was completely useless, until I took the optional courses for two years after Grade 9. It's then that teachers really have the ability to build upon the simple concepts and show students how to actually use the language properly.
