I don't like the Beatles, but i'm not going to say they're not talented. you must be one of those guys that think it's easy to write a hit song. it's not...most of the bands you see around that are cool cause only a few people like thing are dying to figure out how to write a song like U2
I'm a musciain. U2's old work was unique. I loved it. Any of that new stuff they have goin' is laughable at best. How about the lyrics to Vertigo? That just stunned me.

Achtung Baby, Joshua Tree, War, unforgettable fire, even Zooropa are all amazing works. PS I think you posted the band Dredg and I checked them out. Thanks for the tip, i really like their stuff. however, guess which Irish band they owe a huge debt to?

Their sound is pretty boring most of the time. Bono of course being the lowpoint, but the drummer is atrocious as well. I can stomach Joshua Tree to some point, but then it just gets repetitive and boring with their catalogue, especially their last few efforts. BTW, since when did Oasis and Axl Rose start to matter when discussing music?

Most of their influences are artists that paint, not write music. Such as Salvador Dal? who they created an entire album after, one entire track of which is off of a single painting from the man. Also so you know they used to be a metal band before Leitmotif. Most of their musical influences came from their previous genre which they basically ditched. They don't owe anything to U2. Also re-read this - "U2's old work was unique. I loved it." I own most of their albums including the B-Sides so I don't know why you're even getting upset. Chill out and enjoy the music.
Haha, yeah how does a post-rock/progressive/metal act have any debt to U2? Dredg writes technically complex music, stunning lyrics, while U2 does nothing like that.

Can't hate on "Sunday, Bloody, Sunday," bro!
I never thought he was anything special. The only song I truly like form them is Miss Sarajevo; because one, it's about my hometown, and two, Pavarotti sings with him on it and Pavarotti is just that...Pavarotti. Dici che il fiume Trova la via al mare E come il fiume Giungerai a me Oltre i confini E le terre assetate Dici che come fiume Come fiume... L'amore giunger? L'amore... E non so pi? pregare E nell'amore non so pi? sperare E quell'amore non so pi? aspettare AAAAH!
I also liked "Love Is Blindness," but Venus' cover is better. lol BTW, you ever heard much of that band? I'm sure you'd love them.

By buying one album, that does not tell you the bulk of what a band is about. Dredg owes no thanks to U2. U2 and Dredg have completely different styles. How can you place such a ridiculous and untrue statement onto them? They get nothing from U2. http://www.myspace.com/dredg Invalid Video Link The sound, the style, the lyric style, it is ALL different. If you were comparing The Backstreet Boys and Nsync, then you'd have a case. You should know a band before you go off and make assumptions about their influences. Not good. This is U2. Invalid Video Link None of Dredg's lyrics have or ever will sound like that. Come on now.
Quote of the year here for me, "guitar player sounds like the Edge." Edge doesn't even have the same playing style as Mark. When Edge uses hypnotic guitar samples let me know. Take a listen to their live album "Live At The Fillmore" and older studio albums and you will have an entirely different opinion. Trust me. Here, check this for starters. Take a listen to Leitmotif and El Cielo. Most dredg fans are hoping the next album coming up will make up for Catch Without Arms. Not to be rude anyway, man.
<div class="quote_poster">phunDamentalz Wrote</div><div class="quote_post"> funny. everytime i mention U2, not even trying to start a musical debate, i'm guaranteed at least 3 posts talking about how u2 are garbage. but if you say so. </div> Yeah, well that's BS I agree. You don't see me bashing them though, do you? I'll be sure to cut on any band bashing on here since I am a TL now. No worries.

Where Dredg got their influence is not an opinion type deal. It is a fact thing, and the fact is, they have no influences from U2. "funny. everytime i mention U2, not even trying to start a musical debate, i'm guaranteed at least 3 posts talking about how u2 are garbage. but if you say so." We said Dredg and U2 sound nothing alike, we did not say U2 was garbage...but "Vertigo" is a garbage U2 song. It makes no damn sense.
Yeah, I don't like Vertigo either. I was really stunned when I heard it the first time. Same how I was with Dredg's tracks Zebraskin and Matroshka. Actually more like really saddened. Meh, oh well. <div class="quote_poster">Chutney Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Listing the 20 worst lyrics will always be harder than listing the 20 best. There's just so much crap out there. Did some spring cleaning around here. BTW, I've only heard like 3 Dredg songs posted by M21 (can't recall them, can you PM me a list of some songs to check out?), and I don't see the U2 connection...To each his own. Phun, how would you rank U2 in Rock n Roll history? Their impact, etc...
Since this has been a recurring theme in this forum, I just went ahead and split it into another topic.
