<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">ORLANDO - Part heartbroken, part frustrated and part realistic, Dwight Howard didn't know how to interpret Kevin Garnett's rather harsh critique of the Orlando Magic center's progress in the NBA. Howard grew up idolizing Garnett, doing everything from studying his game tapes to hanging a poster of the Minnesota Timberwolves star on the wall of his Atlanta home. While the two talked cordially recently at the NBA All-Star Game, they have had their scrapes on the court. Garnett was whistled for a technical foul two years ago for shoving Howard when they wrestled for a rebound. And veteran referee Jess Kersey admonished them for wrestling and trash talking late in Sunday's game. So maybe it was no surprise that Garnett was somewhat critical of the 21-year-old Howard, questioning his inability to add a mid-range jump shot and his propensity for turning the ball over. Said Garnett of Howard: "Now you're going to see what kind of player Dwight wants to be and if he evolves his game into other aspects. We'll see if he starts to attack defenses differently and if he does his homework. . . . There are ways that you can make everyone else around you better and at the same time make yourself better. But he has to do his homework to evolve his game." Howard was admittedly stunned by the critique. Said Howard: "I'm just 21 years old and I'm pretty sure nobody my age has faced double teams the way I'm seeing them now. The main thing is I know for me to reach the next level I have to keep working on my game. I'm just going to keep working hard and use these final (seven) games to show people a different Dwight than they've ever seen."</div> Source-->Florida Today
I posted about 5 comments on KG's statements in the other thread about this subject... this just proves exactly what i was thinking and what i was getting at.... KG is a chump... who the hell does he think he is? This had me furious yesterday because it shows how much class KG has... NONE. I dont want to say more because it will just sound i'm repeating myself from the last thread.
note to dwight: Find a new role model... i'm tellin you... get along with shaq, theres a lot to learn from him, and he doesn't live too far from you. I would love to see you get some tutelage from a class guy that has ACTUALLY WON RINGS, and can show you not to take the game to seriously, and tune out the critics and do what you do best... SHAQ TO ORLANDO BEFORE HIS RETIREMENT!!
Shaq as his role model? He's a terrible choice, you want Dwight Howard taking the regular season off and not coming into training camp in shape? The player I'd like to see Howard emulate is Tim Duncan. Having the ability to dominate a game without dominating a boxscore is something Howard is capable of achieving.
Tim Duncan would be the perfect role model. While he isn't flashy, he gets the job done and is one of the best players in the league when it comes to fundamentals. Players like Garnett may be exciting and get the media's attention but it's players like Duncan who win championships and go down in history.

Huh? Is this a joke? What exactly is wrong, or even mean in what KG said? I'm confused here, KG just says what is the truth, Dwight DOES need to continue to improve his game, and on the offensive end, okay? Dwight's reply is not that encouraging though, he shouldn't be saying I'm young, he should be accepting it and saying yea, I definately am looking to improve my offense. There might have been some interesting interpretation of what KG said by the reporter that told Dwight about this.

I'm pretty sure the media or reporters just asked his opinion on Dwight and he gave it to them. I don't know how you can call those comments offensive since Garnett's basic message to Dwight was to learn how to deal with double teams (which is something Garnett sees on a nightly basis but remains a consistent 20 point scorer so his opinion does have some merit). The guy's been the MVP of the league, revolutionized his position in basketball and is a definite future hall of famer. I think that he's at least a little credible when giving his criticisms on Dwight. Dwight is a young player, but Dwight kind of just used his age as an excuse. I'd rather see Dwight take Garnett's comments as a motivator and prove him wrong that way, although he did say that he would continue to work on his game which is always a positive sign.

He did, but in the beginning he sort of pointed out that he was only 21 years old, which is a pretty lame excuse if you ask me (but I most likely have taken it out of context). But I also added: <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">I'd rather see Dwight take Garnett's comments as a motivator and prove him wrong that way, although he did say that he would continue to work on his game which is always a positive sign.</div>
First, I would like to say that Garnett did have a point when he did say those things about Howard. The problem Dwight is facing right now is that he isn't able to create his own offense against a double team like other elite frontcourt players in the NBA. It can be done with some practice, just look at the other top players playing PF or Center in the league and you'll see what I'm talking about. I have no doubt that Dwight is going to figure it out though since I remember that at one point, he had a hard time creating any offense at all, with most of his points coming off of putbacks and second opportunities. The age thing is not something I would encourage people to chalk things up to since if you're going to be one of the best in the NBA, you have to exceed expectations. That being said, I seem to remember Garnett having some of the same growing pains Dwight is having toward the beginning of his career - especially after people in the league started realizing what a force he could be. As much as I hate to break out the stat sheet, when you look at KG and Dwight - both players who entered the league at 18, mind you - on paper for their third years, the numbers are pretty close. http://www.nba.com/playerfile/kevin_garnet...reer_stats.html http://www.nba.com/playerfile/dwight_howar...reer_stats.html Garnett scored roughly one more point a game, but Howard had a little more than 2 rebounds every game. Dwight is shooting at a better percentage, but doesn't shoot as well at the line. Minutes per game are almost equal, so all said, Dwight is progressing just as well - better in some areas, in fact - as Garnett did so long ago. Dwight will be fine, but he will definitely have to develop a short to mid range shot and work on his free throws before he can truly dominate on the offensive side of the floor. Defensively, he's an excellent rebounder and the stats aren't a good representation since he doesn't block as many shots as you would like him too, but he often forces other players to alter their shots.
KG is a class act, no doubt about it. While his comments may have been harsh, they were also true, and I would chalk up KG's behavior to the fact that he's proabably completely frustrated right now with his own situation.

Hes just sayin the truth it maybe a little harsh, but its the truth. Ask him he came straight from High School and can shoot the ball from where ever on the court and has averaged 4.5 apg for his career. So get outta here talkin like that.
HA! how many of you read what i was saying in the other thread about this article? KG just showed he has no class... thats fine if he wants to state his opinion, but sayin it to the public is something different... i was suggesting Shaq to be a role model because he has more rings than Duncan **cough cough** and his personality is the closest to Dwight's, not to mention that his game is similar too... i've never seen 3 of the people bad mouthin me ever in this Orlando forum so you can suck my D#$K... dont tell me to get out of here when i'm entitled to my opinion. F#$K KG and F#$K the haters... don't ever talk down to me unless you are willing to back that S#!T up fags... i aint 14 and i will whoop your A!@#S... whether you think im 14 or not.
Ok you must be under 13 now. Oh yea and please dont kick my ass over the internet............. Plus Im pretty sure KG was asked that question by a reporter he didnt make a press conference to announce it......
What's wrong with what KG said? I'm sure a reporter brought it up. If anything, Dwight is the one who over-reacted here.
I didn't see a big deal in KG's commments, but if I was Dwight I'd just keep doing what I was doing. KG should talk though, he shoots way more jump shots than a 7 footer should.
