"Sam's done an incredible job," the president and general manager said yesterday.

Mitchell's future with the Raptors has been a topic of interest and debate since Colangelo took over a struggling franchise in February, 2006.</div>

The Globe posted a similar article too ... so it's not just a case of Doug Smith and his over optimism. Michael Grange is actually one of the better reporters out there ... he just gets little credit because he works for the Globe which has the smallest sports section around. They put out quality but not quantity.

I think we got to give him an extension now. Its becoming more and more clear that he's built a great relationship with this roster and getting rid of him will only screw all that chemistry up. As frustrated as I get with his playcalling and in-game decisions, I guess I'll just have to hope that he improves upon that in the next few seasons.

I'm still anxious to see how he performs in the playoffs though. When you're facing the same team in a 7 game series, coaching strategies and decisions are magnified.

I agree. I think Colangelo is waiting for the same thing. There is no point getting so excited over what he's done in the regular season, BC really needs to see what he can in the playoffs cuz the raps will making the playoffs for the next three seasons at least.

Ya I think we pretty much have to as well.

The only thing that bothers me about this article is the incinuation that "the board" has an opinion on the matter. Tell the old guys in suits to shutup and run the books, they've already proved they are too inept to handle the personelle decisions for a sports franchise. It should be Colangelo's decision to make, Richard Peddie can go screw himself.

I hope BC makes his decision after he watches how Mitchell performs in the playoffs.

I've never been a big fan of Mitchell's (I am still not) and I'm thinking there is big a possibility that Mitchell will be exposed during the playoffs.

Well I can admit when its time to concede a point and, unless Mitchell totally exposes himself in the playoffs, it looks like removing him will do more harm than good. Our team relies so much on chemistry and familiarity, and he's got the support of everyone on our roster. I'm still very critical of his coaching style, but the best we can do is to hope he improves upon his obvious weaknesses.

But you agree he should be signed now rather than head into the post season with a lame duck headcoach?

He's not going to be signed before the playoffs. BC and Mitchell both agreed that they won't talk about contracts during the season as they think it is a distraction (which it is).

No I don't, because he isn't in a lame duck situation. That's when its quite clear that the coach is going to be fired eventually or used as a scapegoat. Colangelo's recent comments suggest otherwise. Both of them had an agreement to not talk about Mitchell's contract until the end of the season and I don't see any reason to go against that now. If anything, its smarter to not mess up our current situation and continue to evaluate the team, so we don't have an Isiah Thomas kind of incident.
