Colangelo: "My intention is to bring Sam back as coach" <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">"My intention is to bring Sam back as coach," Colangelo said. "There's absolutely been tremendous growth that's been experienced here in Sam developing as a coach, and I have every intention of acknowledging his success this year and trying to make the right situation work out for the Toronto Raptors and Sam Mitchell.</div> http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writ...otes/index.html Bad news to me, might be good news to you depending on your perspective.
You have to give him a shot. He finally has the tools to make his system work and it is. Personally I think if bosh wanted him gone he would be gone. If Bosh is happy you guys should be too.
I'm not convinced that he's a good enough coach to lead you to a championship yet. He's done a great job building chemistry and getting the players to buy into a system, but I think that system is way too simplistic. I was just watching a replay of our last game against the Pistons and the contrast is just so obvious. They move off the ball, make strong cuts, and generally make it so that you can't anticipate what's going to happen on their next offensive set. Garnett's already commented on our offense being simplistic and completely dependant on the pick-and-roll. Even though its working well now, eventually we're going to have to add some variety. I suppose Colangelo's going with the assumption that Mitchell will improve in that aspect, and its not all that unreasonable. I mean, he's really taken steps from when he first joined us. And the good thing about coaches is that you can get rid of them pretty easily. If it eventually becomes clear that Sam's not improving in game planning and strategy, then we can just cut him loose.
I trust Colangelo, and I'm sure that if he realizes he made a mistake, he won't try to play it off like he didn't, he would do something about it immediately.

Sam Mitchell made a good point, where once the raps get a taste of the playoffs they will want more. I think if Sam dosn't work out, like Brian sees he isn't a championship coach, go after Larry Brown (if he's not retired) or Mike Ivoronie, since he should have a strong relationship with Brian. But I like Sam, and what hes done. He's a very real guy. He is only 2 years removed from playing, and he challanges his players. He helped chirs bosh alot, and i think chris bosh really respects sam, and not hiring him could effect bosh mostly casue sam is the guy who challenged him and made him a leader, made him play to his best. I would like to see Sam back, but if Brian dosnt see it in the near future, then cest la vie, as long as soon we can win it all. Ill wait, but sam, imo, is a good coach, and is proving himself night in and night out.

We will see these things exploted in the playoffs. A team will take the pick and roll away. When this happens and Sams plan doesnt work then you can blame him. But as of now you juice that pick and roll to death until someone stops it. Plus this roster hasnt been together for a full season. When you guys meet Washington they will try to take that away. few things work game after game. If you guys dont beat the Wiz he should lose his job.
I just can't stand another season of watching Mitchell's TJ isolation/wild shot play late in games. As Chutney mentioned, Mitchell's playbook is too simplistic. We run the same play over and over. Next season other teams will be more prepared and our pick-and-roll will not likely be as effective as it was this season. It seems like Mitchell has a hard time changing or adapting his gameplan when things aren't working out as planned. Whenever we go against better coached teams, Mitchell's coaching gets exposed one way or another.
