being a big duke fan, im just curious what people think about shelden. do you like him? think he deserves more time? less time? good potential? will he get better? just, what are your thoughts on him. from when i've seen him play (which has maybe been 5 times) he hasnt been aggressive enough. and from watching his stats everytime he plays, he needs to make/take more shots. lately though (past 2 games) hes played well, with two straight double-doubles. your thoughts?
I always thought he would be an Antonio Davis type player. I don't expect him to be a star or anything, just a solid double double guy. But that's my own thoughts.
Same here... he looks like a solid player, but athletically and skills wise, he's just not made to make a huge impact in the NBA... the game seems a bit too quick for him, and he's just an average talent... I think being a solid double-double guy is the most he can aspire to, and even that is going to be a stretch... his mark on a team will be solid production and solid defense...
the hawks are actually playing right now. its halftime and he already has a double-double. 10 points, 11 boards. now that hes finally seeing some good time (he started again, i think the third straight, and has already played 21 minutes) hes actually showing that hes a big contributor. EDIT: he finished with 16 and 17 boards career high) off of 6-9 shooting. looks pretty damn good to me. EDIT #2: he did it again tonight. he finished with 21 points (career high), 10 boards, and 2 blocks.
I'm just happy he picked it up towards the end of the season, and didn't seem sucky the whole year. He turned to ball over a little too much in his ends of the season good play, but he's a young player and a big man, that happens. Hopefully he can be a nice PF/C for the Hawks, seems like he has quick hands too, he get's a good amount of steals. As a starter in 31 games his averages were: 25.5 MPG | 7.9 PPG | 7.5 RPG | 50.5% FG | 0.9 SPG | 0.81 BPG
I like this kid, have since his final season at Duke, I always admired his inside defense. He has a ways to go, but I think the same, he'll turn into a solid double double guy. He kind of reminds me of Ben Wallace a bit, but more offensively polished.

Check out Chuck Haye's stats as a starter in 43 games: 24.0 MPG | 6.5 PPG | 7.6 RPG | 59.2% FG | 1.0 SPG | .21 BPG More rebounds per minute, better FG%, and apparently, quicker hands...So now does spending a 5th overall pick in the draft on a guy like that sound that good anymore??? How about passing up on Roy, Foye, and Gay to get him??? Just wonderin'...

He has a solid career ahead of him.

That Williams' production is considered that of a role player's. You don't spend a Top 5 pick on a role player. You spend Top 5 picks on potential All-Stars. My argument was that at the time, Williams was not considered that good, nor will he ever be considered more than a solid player. I do not believe Williams was anywhere close to the best defensive player in that draft, but I guess that's just opinion. Atlanta was in need of defensive help, and it can be argued that Williams was the best defensive player left for them to take at that time, but to pick him over Foye??? When they made a mistake the previous year not taking a point guard??? I just thought the selection was very questionable, but it's not like Hawks management hasn't made a ton of those. As it is, if Williams turns out to be a solid player, than that will be one of the better decisions made by the Hawks so far. It's just that the team needs some kind of floor leadership. I understand that the free agent acquisitions at the point guard position have not panned out, so at least they are trying to solve the problem, but I don't see why they wouldn't try to draft a fix to that problem. Not saying that Foye is or will be lighting the world on fire, but he could possibly be a fix to the situation. I just got the feeling that the Hawks didn't want to admit making such a laughable error when passing over two quality point guards. It sucks to make a mistake, but it sucks even more not to admit it and continue making mistakes along the way. If Williams pans out and becomes a solid contributor, things will hopefully work out on the free agent front.
