BLACKSBURG, Va. - A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech on Monday, killing 21 people in the deadliest campus shooting rampage in U.S. history. The gunman was killed, bringing to death toll to 22, but it was unclear if he was shot by police or took his own life.

"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said Virginia Tech president Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified."

The name of the gunman was not immediately released, and investigators offered no motive for the attack. It was not immediately known if the gunman was a student.

The bloodbath took place at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus, beginning at about 7:15 a.m. at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed dormitory that houses 895 people, and continuing about two hours later at Norris Hall, an engineering building, authorities said. Police said they were still investigating the shooting at the dorm when they got word of the gunfire at the classroom building.

Some of the dead were students. One student was killed in the dorm, and the others were killed in the classroom, Virginia Tech Police Chief W.R. Flinchum.</div>

Is there any real shock to these type of events anymore?

Not to me. What's shocking is the genocide in Darfur.

31 now, "Death toll at Virginia Tech rises to 31 in worst shooting incident in U.S. history."

    Terrible, but still not shocking.

    * Make that 32.

Yep, and if it indeed is 32 deaths now that would exceed that Texas massacre. From what I see they're still saying that 24 are confirmed dead though. Makes no sense.

Disturbing how the mass shooting took place two hours after the first minor shooting.

How were all classes not canceled?

R.I.P. to those who lost their lives.

    MORON ABSOLUTE F'N MORON!

What the hell is wrong with these people in charge? If there's a shooting on campus, they should immediately evacuate the premises and close off the school perimeter.

Wow, that's one of the most idiotic decisions I've ever heard about. What a tragedy. Prayers go out to the survivors and families of the victim.

Hope this brings up the issue of gun control, but I really doubt it. More than likely, it'll be pinned on some sort of scapegoat.

Wait, and did any of you see during the press conference that this guy Steger even chuckled at a question addressed to him by the media?

Okay so you kill 33 people then you kill yourself? Thats what makes me even more angry about the whole situation. Well hes burning in hell right now. Eventually this stuff is going to be daily if we don't do something about it.

As Chutney said, that's one of the more idiotic things an admin could do. The fact that someone was SHOT on campus should be enough of an incentive to close it all off. Instead, all these other students lost thier lives cause the University was too bone-headed to react in what would have been the rational manner.

This is absolutely terrible. I know a countless number of people that go there, and thank God so far, everyone I know is okay.

I want to express my condolences to everyone that has lost a loved one. Despicable act by a despicable human. R.I.P.

I cannot understand why gun laws are not more strict. You KNOW there are a bunch of CRAZY people in this world, and yet it is SO EASY for them to get their hands on guns. And all they have to do is go to a crowded area and start shooting.

And the fact that school was not canceled even though 2 people were shot and killed in the dorms is beyond me.
