Toronto television play-by-play man Chuck Swirsky emailed to inform me he voted for Raptors big man Andrea Bargnani ahead of Roy. Swirsky wrote "...there is no doubt (Roy) will win the award, and he had a terrific season, however I voted for Bargnani..."</div>

I'm as big a Bargnani fan as anyone, but even I wouldn't vote for him. This reminds me of that one Utah writer who voted for Deron Williams instead of Chris Paul. Chuck's being way too much of a homer again.

What a homer, they really shouldn't give votes to media that only cover one team, leaves too much potential for bias.

God...it's things like this that make me hate Chuck as anything besides a play by play guy.

Chuck's an idiot. Thats why voting shouldn't even be voted by the media. Most of them are more fans than analysts.

Props to Brian Colangelo who called at the start of the year that Brandon Roy would be rookie of the year.

I don't think Bargs winning it over Roy is ridiculous...I don't know why its being talked like it is. First off...if all you want to do is look at stats, fine. They shot about the same %, both had good 3pt% but Roy's was better, Roy added 1 more board and 3 more assists per game to go with 7pts.

OK so Roy wins? Well......i don't think is that cut and dry. Roy did that while logging 7 more minutes per game while having the advantage of being a starter for nearly all of his games. Bargs was playing on a vastly superior team which brings his stats down abit. Make no mistake, if Roy was playing on the Raps he would not be playing 35 minutes and wouldnt have those stats. But if Bargs were on the Blazers, I think he could pull similiar numbers

I would of voted for Bargs also, so thank you Chuck.

Why go into hypotheticals like that, though? Bargnani didn't play as many minutes as Roy, but are you sure that he could handle playing that many minutes over the course of an 82-game season? Could he have shouldered the responsibility of being his team's leader in his first year in the league? Would he be able to impact the game in ways outside of scoring? There are a ton of questions you could bring up, so the right way to vote for the RoY is to use the stats you have. As far as I'm concerned, having more mpg is an accomplishment and, since Roy had a lot more to do with the Blazers' success than Bargnani had to do with the Raptors', the team records don't really provide a convincing argument. Roy is the obvious winner and this is coming from a huge Andrea Bargnani fan.

I think of the ROY alot like the MVP - as in maybe team record should factor in

If Kobe bryant played on an absolutely awful team, he'd very likely blow away everyone statistically. But in all likely hood that crap team would win 20-30 games and nobody would even consider Bryant for MVP. Barg's is pretty crucial to the Raptors success, so even if his stats don't glow like Roy's do - so what. I think he's just as talented, just as valuable, and he's doing it on a better team

I don't know if he could play those minutes for an 82 game season...but then again I don't know if Roy could play those minutes for an 82 game season...he only played in 57!

"Heading into the All-Star break, the Trail-Blazers have a winning percentage of 43 percent with Roy injured while they have a winning percentage of 40 percent with him in the lineup (these statistics are accurate up until the All-Star break)" from a 411 article, i'm not sure of the stats after the break

Why would you think of the RoY like the MVP? They have no connection whatsoever. The MVP awards players who are the focal point of their team, and rookies barely every have such significant roles in their first seasons. If you wanted to make a parallel, you'd have to give Roy more accolades because, like I said earlier, he's a much bigger factor in Portland's success, than Bargnani is with Toronto's. But really, it doesn't matter. The Rookie of the Year award is given based on statistics (always has been), and Brandon Roy had a better statistical season with more responsibilities.

Roy's suffered through injury problems in the beginning of the year, but Andrea has too. He's played 65 games and was nailed to the bench for the first week and a half of his career, so its basically a wash. The fact is that Roy started almost every game he played, showed that he deserved those minutes, put up better statistics than Bargnani, and played a bigger role on his team.

Bargnani definitely does not deserve the ROY award. That should go to Brandon Roy, and it did thankfully because he deserves it. He had a great season and will be a great player in the future as well. However, I'm going to call it right now as I have before this kid even played a game in this league that Bargnani will be the better player when both players' careers are over. Expect amazing things in due time. I know I'm excited.

I wouldn't vote for Roy just because he sounds like a pansy.

But yes, he did deserve ROY.

But you're putting a lot of "what if's" into the equasion. You're exploring hypothetical situations, when we have actual statistical data on which to evaluate a player. You can't say FOR SURE that Bargs would put up similar numbers to Roy on the Blazers...maybe his style wouldn't fit into their system.

Awards should be given out on who had a better season. Roy had a better season then Bargnani.

Ya but that's a little different. Normally to be MVP you have to be on a team that's a threat to go at least somewhat deep in the playoffs. Rookies the absolute level of contribution seems to be more important.

God i hope no one outside of the raptors forum reads this.

meh, to each their own I guess. I prefer to consider ROY similiar to the way I think of the MVP

    Fair enough.

The NBA opens it self up to this kind of debate by not putting down any solid criteria.

It wouldn't make much sense for the criteria of the ROY to be on team record. The higher picks, going to the worst teams are already at a handicap.
