MIAMI -- Coach Pat Riley issued a one-sentence statement Wednesday regarding the future of the Miami Heat: Shaquille O'Neal will be a part of it. "Amongst growing speculation in the media, in reference to Shaq, I want to set the record straight and say that we are not trading Shaq," Riley said. Putting O'Neal on the market became a rumor topic after the Chicago Bulls swept the defending NBA champion Heat in the first round of the playoffs. At age 35, O'Neal failed to reach the second round for the first time since 1994. O'Neal sat out 42 games this season, mostly because of knee surgery, and averaged a career-low 17.3 points. He made the All-Star Game for the 14th consecutive season. Honestly, the trade for Shaq seems kinda dumb for us right now. PG: Wade SG: Butler SF:Odom PF: Haslem C: Zo
^Plus two first-rounders I believe. I was never a fan of that trade. They could have won a ship last year without Shaq.

No, you need to understand that trade was great on Miami's part. The dumb part was signing him for 5 years.

The dumb part was signing him for 5 years.</div> Shaq wouldn't have agreed to the trade to Miami unless he received his extension. Everyone predicted this outcome, with Shaq preventing Miami from building around Dwyane Wade. The only reason why Shaq worked out his 1st year with the Heat was the fact he had something to prove, and equally important Wade was on his rookie contract still. The Heat were getting superstar production from Wade around $4M a year. With those two both making max money, Miami is pretty much capped out for the next 3 years. Another mistake was Walker's deal.

What I'm saying is they still could've signed him for 3 years/60 million or something like that. 5 years is too long.</div> No they couldn't have. Shaq wanted his next deal to be worth $100M. With the Lakers he wanted to play another 3 years at $33.33M, but he agreed to sign for less money and add the extra two years with Miami so they'd have some wiggle room with the salary cap.
Miami trade him or you gonna be in a hole for acouple of years :X He isnt getting any better ill tell you that..

The only reason to bring SHaq to miami was to win a championship and we did. And Shaq's presence allowed D-Wade to improve significantly so I woulnd't complain too much. But I still think Shaq is too overpaid.

Caron Butler is and All Star and Odom playes very well alongside Dwyane Wade. All we would need is a center.
