Rivers hasn't had much of a chance to prove himself in Boston yet. A staff of Red Auerbach, John Wooden and Phil Jackson couldn't have taken the teams from the past few years anywhere further than Doc did. He deserves a fair chance with an actual NBA roster, because he hasn't really had one in both Boston and Orlando. He does some stupid stuff every now and then, but so does every coach. I doubt this changes anything, anyway. Its only a one year extension, so ownership is just as likely to fire him if he doesn't succeed next year.
