I just saw on ESPN that Stern is now on record as predicting that no one will ever leave the bench again during a playoff game.

Over and over, Stern justifies his suspension-happy policies by predicting that there will be no more suspensions for stupid reasons! But more and more stupid suspensions keep happening, so something seems to be wrong here.

We shall see, but I would bet big and bet often that Stern will be wrong about his latest prediction sooner or later, and not just once or twice either. I would say, as a rough prediction, that at least one player will leave the bench during an altercation during a playoff game at least once every two seasons. Of course, with that frequency, Stern might get lucky and it might not happen for 6 or 7 years. By the way, that was just an expression, I don't bet on sports or anything else.

That low frequency points to a problem here. When someone tries to eliminate something that does not happen very much anyway, and the way they try to do it is stupid, they may not be forced to change their approach for a very long time, because the stupid incidents happen only once in a blue moon. Fans would actually be better off if altercations were more common, because then the League would be forced to come up with better rules to deal with them. The League would be forced to increase the fines to truly large dollar amounts, and they would be forced to increase the number of free throws awarded to the team that is the victim of flagrant fouls.

Stern's prediction is in the 10th paragraph here:

<div class="quote_poster">Run BJM Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">The difference between Duncan on the floor vs. Amare/Diaw on the floor is that Duncan walked 2 steps onto the floor but there was no altercation. There was potential for an altercation, but nothing actually happened. Amare on the other hand charged onto the floor, tried to get around asst. coaches, no way in hell was he just going to see if Nash was okay or going to check into the game or something. You can't prove it officially but anyone with common sense and a lack of bias can see he was going to get into the confrontation. Duncan also stayed "in the bench area" which is what the rule specifically states while Amare was already down to where Nash fell by the time he got pulled back.

Also, Horry got suspended one game for the hit on Nash and another game for elbowing Raja Bell when Bell got in his face. Thats according to the TNT guys who got it from league officials.

In my opinion the suspensions and fines have been consistent. They may be excessive in some cases but they're consistent for everyone from what I've seen.</div>
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting RunBJM:</div><div class="quote_post">Its irrelevant because there was no altercation. Therefore Duncan can go a few steps on the floor if he wanted to, players do it all the time when they celebrate. As long as theres no altercation, which there wasn't, hes fine.</div>

I think Run explained the situation perfectly. And no offense DREAM, but fans like you are the reason why the league gives the MVP to the flashiest/coolest guy of the moment instead of the consistent/dominant/fundamental force of the league (Shaq/Duncan).

I don't know what came over Horry there. He is usually a quiet player, never dirty. He's so calm, thats how he makes all those clutch shots. But him fouling Nash led to Amare getting suspended which led to Spurs winning game 5. It all works out well for a Spurs fan, but I'm not a Spurs fan.

<div class="quote_poster">THE DREAM Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">^^^one of the reasons I won't watch is because of the repeated stupidity of our league....and yes I'm a diehard basketball fan, but Utah and S.A. isn't the most "exciting" series as an everyday basketball fan...sorry, it's just the way I feel....</div>

then watch the AND1 mixtape tour or a dunk contest or something! Utah and San Antonio is going to be a great series, man.

I don't how you'll feel but this series will always be tainted imo...this should've been a 7 game series, but Stern and Stu decided to cut it one game short......even if I was a spurs fan (which I'd never be) I wouldn't really feel like I "won" this series completely......this years playoffs = bullshit.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Are you serious? Watching basketball how it's suppose to be played is less entertaining than watching Kobe or T-Mac take 50 FT's? The league is ridiculous with the star treatment they give people. Utah, SA, and Detroit play basketball how it's suppose to be played, their systems are the best I've seen in the NBA. It's fun to watch the Run n' Gun systems, but when they're in halfcourt, they don't do anything effectively. Or these teams that have star players that they'll give the ball to, they go one on one, and hope for a foul. They play 5 guys for a reason, so when you don't use all of them all the time, that comes back to hurt you in the playoffs when you face these teams that slow the pace down. Utah exposed Rafer Alston, and the rest of their role players. Spurs exposed the Nuggets, they just aren't the same team since they traded Andre Miller, much more star oriented team. Then when Utah faced the W's, when they slowed them down, Utah exposed how unorganized the W's were. They are fun to watch while they're in full throttle, but when they're in a halfcourt game, of course they're not fun to watch cuz they look like my high school JV team. So if you want to watch faster pace teams, more power too you, but real die-hard fans have to appreciate the style Utah and Spurs play. I know Matt Harpring isn't the athletic beast that every NBA team has now days, but he's someone that plays with all heart and will. Harpring isn't going to throw it down from the FT line, he's going to get these gritty, hard fought, contested layups. I guess it's cuz I'm a Utah fan, but they style they play should be appreciated a lot more.

Dude it's not my fault that the league gives the MVP to the "flashiest" person.....as a diehard basketball fan all I can say is that it is nice to see a team break the century mark everynow and then (it used to be a thing of normalcy, now it's viewed as something "bad" and "not pure"), that doesn't make me a "and 1 watching, street ball liking basketball slut" and that doesn't make you guys "basketball pursist who appreciate the game"....Magic = exciting, MJ = exciting, Hakeem = exciting, Wade = exciting, Kobe = exciting (yes despite my sarcastic remarks I enjoy watching her play), Nash = exciting....Jazz and Spurs = I'd rather watch grass grow in a desert....I'm sorry but that's just the way it is, both teams are really good (although I feel like one shouldn't be there) but there is nothing slightly entertaining about either one of their styles of play

^^^I swear man I mean I really don't know why the league loves the spurs...it's not like they're a big market so that kills the "conspiracy theories".......I'm thinkin you might be on to something.

As long as Tim Duncan is healthy and motivated, the Spurs are winners. I hate Bowen, Elson and Ginobilit (somewhat), but the Spurs are a great dynasty (yes, I realize they haven't won championships consecutively but nonetheless). Tim Duncan is the man.

DREAM, you've been warned through PM, the next step is a suspension. Cut the double and triple posts, cut the nonsense posts, if you don't have anything intelligent and positive to contribute to the thread, don't contribute at all. At JBB we don't care about how many posts you have, we care about the quality.

XSV, your post wasn't needed, as well.

I find it hilarious how some people don't like to watch "boring" basketball. Utah and San Antonio is going to be one of the most technically sound series in a long time. Boozer and Duncan is going to be an amazing matchup.

What evidence do you have that the league ruined the series? Who's to say that the Spurs don't win game 5 even if Amare and Diaw were playing? They took the first game of the series in PHX, why couldn't they take game 5? The players broke the rule, the players acknowledged that. They screwed themselves, not Stern.

^^^^^seriously man I don't what it is with you but you've just been a flat out bitch lately....yes a bitch...I post things in the off topic forum (a forum that isn't even meant for "serious" discussion and you get mad)...then I come in here and complain about the series and how I felt it was tainted because of suspensions and you come straggling along again.....I have done nothing to offend anyone and no one else seems to have a problem with my opinions (although they might disagree with them)....you're too moody to be a moderator of a forum.

The Dream its not that your comments offend anyone.... its the fact that you lack to bring anything positive to the forums other then complaining and bitching about something which was initiated because of the players themselfs.
Spurs dominated them anyway, they were obviously the better team.. they played better when they were missing two guys anyways lol...they coulda had that game 5 but chocked.. so your whining and complaining is just annoying everyone.

The loss of Amare and Diaw was obviously very big (anyone that tells you otherwise probably doesn't know a thing about basketball), but the Suns should have won Game 5 regardless. They had a huge lead, but they just let it slip away.

Well, it certainly should have gone to 7 if there were no suspensions. But I predict the Spurs going to the Finals pretty much every year. Last year was a fluke. But the Spurs are the best team in basketball because they have the best player in the NBA.

I don't understand why everyone is so worked up about the suspensions. They were totally legit. Amare left the bench, and thats not allowed. Everyone wanted this to be more epic that it was. Its over and there was no targeting of anyone. I also think that it will be interesting to watch the Utah Spurs series; Utah being such a young team, and Spurs being such and old team. I want to see how Utah will take this.
