"It's not a good time for me to make that decision," Nelson said Wednesday at the Warriors' downtown training complex. "I think it was really important that I came here. I'm not so sure it's important that I stay on." http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2872765 Man that would really suck if he left because his style of ball suits us the best. He gets the best out of every player and they love playing for him
That would suck if he left. Granted it was great to have him even one year compared to not having him at all, I don't think hes taught the team enough to let them go yet and they would still be a successful team. I think one more year would be greatly beneficial to the development of the players, the system, and the young Asst. coaches like Stephen Silas and Kieth Smart who are learning from Nellie and have the potential to be head coaches in the future. If he left now I think everyone would be a bit lost even despite the strides that the players made throughout the year. If he does leave its understandable because hes an old guy, has a wife, and according to that article he added 15 pounds over the season. I just hope he comes back at least one more year, the team isn't ready yet to be left in the hands of Baron and whoever would get hired/promoted to coach.
i don't think nellie wants to leave. i think he is saying all this so he can have more say in personnel decisions. nellie is a smart guy, he knows that if he were to make mullin think that he was planning on leaving, mullin would come in and sweeten the pot by giving nellie more authority on draft day, trades, and other personnel decisions to try to lure him back because he knows how much don nelson means to this team. he is the reason we made the playoffs this year. i just hope nellie doesn't try to trade j-rich, he is definitely not one of his favorites, i don't think i've ever really heard him say anything positive about jason's game. but he hasn't even seen him at full strength yet. i hope he gives him another year at full health before making a decision on whether he wants richardson on the warriors.

Perhaps Don Nelson will decide to come back, but with a priority to give the keys to Keith Smart or something, so if at some point during the season Nelson's physical condition and lifestyle isn't what he wants it to be at that time, then he can let Keith Smart be the head man for a game or so, or for the remainder of the season. (that was kind of a long sentence) but I won't hold it against Nelson if he decides to step down. It may just get a little bit tricky however, because if the Warriors make big trades this offseason and Nelson retires, then it may be difficult to build off this season's success.

However that was before he was 100% and it was mostly that Nelson was a bit disappointed or frustrated that the team hadn't seen the best of JRich and that JRich and Baron were the only two good players on the team (yeah I suppose this was early in the season). But you may be correct, I haven't seen many recent comments to actually say that you are wrong. I do disagree with your argument that Nelson is doing this to get more control of the team. From the article it pretty much says that he is looking to get his health back on track, how his health suffered during the season, and how he has happiness away from basketball. Also I am sure Chris Mullin is letting Don Nelson have as much say in personale decisions as Don Nelson wants. One of the things I believe Mullin tries to do is work with the head coach, which is a reason why Musselman was fired, and a reason why the Warriors signed Fisher I believe who would have fit in for Mike Montgomery and his system, and helped him along.

I think a lot of times people over-analyze a lot of what Nellie says. There was probably some motive for him making this public but I think it was more to give his players, front office people, and fans a warning that this is a strong possibility for him. He didn't just want to step down out of no where after the great run. I think hes legitimately concerned with his health. I don't think hes really itching to get more power with GM decisions. Like Clif said, I think Mullin is working with Nelson and letting Nellie decide what he wants; Mullin just does the footwork by calling around the league and seeing whats out there and getting those players. Mullin doesn't seem overly controlling and he agreed to trade Dunleavy just months after Dunny's new contract kicked in. Nellie knows what he wants and Mullin trusts in Nellie to make it work when the players are acquired.
I really hope he stays. But if he leaves I'll be happy for him. He just turned 67, he'd be 69 when his contract is up. It's almost hard to believe how old he is.

I'm assuming the first sentence was sarcasm or just bitterness toward Nellie because he jumped ship from Dallas. But Jackson and Nellie have a love affair for each other, if anything Nellie would leave for sure if Jackson were traded.

With Foyle, we're talking poor hands, low basketball IQ, no court awareness, and not even the ability to make layups or simple finesse or power plays. Plus, in motion offense, coaches typically want their point guards to know how to run plays and their big men to pass from the top of the key. Fisher doesn't do it, Foyle doesn't do it, Murphy would rather shoot, Dunleavy can't shoot. But Fisher man.... doesn't even know how to run a fastbreak or do anything else besides take ill advised shots without calling for a screen at least or wait until his rebounders are under the basket... nope he just shoots it with 20 seconds practically fresh on the clock like posessions are easy to come by. Foyle is an idiot, Fisher is an idiot, Mike Montgomery would be an idiot if he came in like he had clout and an understanding of nba talent fitting into his system and would make suggestions to the GM about what players he'd like. Fish and Foyle would highly be the worst choices for a motion offense and trying to teach the younger players how it works. How the heck would there be any inside outside ball movement? There wouldn't. So that's why I've listened to that insight ever since from guys who watch stanford ball like fanatics. It makes sense to me that it was more Mullin than it was the rookie Montgomery who didn't even know what type of players Mullin set him up with. Mullin didn't even know it either until he realized his mistakes... Mike Montgomery, I've been told, would rather have a pure point guard like Luke Ridnour or Andre Miller and for a big man... all it needs to be is a role player that can do a little bit of everything like any one of the Collins twins or at best have a Brad Miller or Memet Okur type of guy that can shoot, pass a little, and play the low post if he has to. Foyle doesn't do jack and if Montgomery chose that guy, well... that is hard to believe. I think it was a pick based on politics... Why not have the one player that was optimistic despite all those bad times on the Warriors and whose only team has been the Warriors. That was Mullin playing the good guy there for Foyle. He probably also hoped Foyle would show up Dampier after he got paid the max or near max.

Montgomery wouldn't know which players he wanted if he were able to choose. How many camp invitees made the team? I don't remember any, compared to this year with Nelson and the two seasons with Musselman. Perhaps Fisher and Foyle (if you want to throw his name in there) were not perfect Montgomery players, but I think Mullin had the idea of signing at least Fisher with Montgomery in mind. My claim before I suppose was more speculation, but I doubt Fisher is signed with Musselman as head coach. Anyhow, Don Nelson is getting up there in age. It is kind of surprising. For some reason it seems as if Don Nelson should be immortal, haha! Long live Nelson! (he may not win championships as head coach but he sure makes it fun!)

If Nellie leaves I'd like Larry Riley to try giving it a shot. He's been Nellie's assistant for a long time, I'm sure he's learned a lot.
