I don't think the Rockets have a lot of flexibility in terms of making big moves. Who knows -- Bonzi Wells might actually return to the team.
Rick Adelman must have the inside track on this job, and probably had a strong interview. I've always felt JVG never took advantage of Yao Ming's passing ability from the high post. Adelman's version of the Princeton style of offense will give Yao a lot more chances as the playmaker, similar to what Divac and Webber did in Sacramento. The Rockets will need their players to move well without the ball so Yao can hit them with backdoor passes for easy baskets. JVG's been with this team for so many years, it's going to take at least one season for the players to re-adjust to a new system. The Rockets need to finalize their decision ASAP, so the new coach has time to practice and work this group of players out.

And I did some research, Adelman has has top 5 defense everywhere he's been, so much for the theory that he's a run & gun only coach.

And I did some research, Adelman has has top 5 defense everywhere he's been, so much for the theory that he's a run & gun only coach.</div> I posted this almost a year ago to the day: The following graphs show how Adelman's teams have done, relative to the league, in offensive and defensive efficiency (points scored and allowed per possession, respectively): And for Van Gundy: Adelman obviously has a more extensive coaching career than Van Gundy in the NBA. Adelman has coached some very good defensive teams, particularly in Portland but also Sacramento was a very good defensive team (contrary to popular opinion) for a few seasons. Adelman also coached some very poor defensive teams. Offensively, his teams have been all over the map as well. But overall, it appears that he's quite capable of coaching a solid offensive and defensive team. His coaching style possibly would bring more balance. Then again, one might conclude given the high variation that the results he brings largely depends on the personnel. Van Gundy has consistently had very good defensive teams, and subpar to downright terrible offensive teams. To what extent is this pattern dependent on the personnel versus his system? He had very good defensive players in New York, but even with mediocre individual defensive talent in Houston he's gotten very strong results.
I felt Van Gundy needed to be fired as soon as I saw how he was intent on using Yao offensively. And I really hope Adelman is the next coach. That said, I really I don't like how the rockets made the move in releasing Van Gundy.
Thanks for the graphs. If we can somehow keep our defensive mentality and transfer that to adelman's offense, we will be very good!
Well...I seen this one coming way back in the regular season. Heres my exact quote from the regular season: <div class="quote_poster">Quoting Rock4life:</div><div class="quote_post">Ego hurt? That's the funniest thing you've said all season. It's a really a double edged sword for JVG. I'm sure he got satisfaction by running off Bonzi. He didn't like him, and wasn't ever gonna give him time to learn the system. But he'll find out (as will you) that there are serious holes in his current 8-man rotation. First off, our jumpshooting will only take us so far, that's why Carol Dawson actually signed Bonzi in the first place. If god forbid Tmac has an off series against Utah in the playoffs, and we lose, JVG will not have a job next season. So either way those silly mind games will come back to haunt JVG</div> Anywayz, I'd like to debate this writer John Lopez of the Houston Chronicle. He obviously hasn't followed the Rockets closely, but yet finds a way to print some of the most inaccurate, false, and sometimes ignorant statements. First off, he labeled the Rocket team with Steve Francis a "bunch of thugs". Then he defends the JVG and bashes the Rockets for firing him, after another disappointing season. Not only that, he criticizes Adelman's defense. Not knowing the Portland team he coached was a GREAT defensive team. The guy has no idea what he writes and I'd LOVE a chance to debate him. I also noticed how the Chronicle leaned towards JVG

They seem to want to add drama to everything. Fran can be amusing at times, and Feignen is probably the best of the bunch. To Lopez's credit though, Les Alexander hasn't really handled the situation all that great. Rudy T., Olajuwan.... They all seem to end on a bad note with Les.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/nba_exper...n?urn=nba,33123 A nice article on the JVG/Les relationship. It also mentioned Yao's interview with the chinese media.

He's more experienced, better qualified, and brings so much excitement back to Houston. We've never been a highscoring team. Maybe he'll change that
Its nice to know that we're getting someone like Adelman, but at the same time, I feel bad as to how JVG was released. I mean, just like that? I wish he really did stay around as consultant or asst. coach for defensive purposes. I know though that his pride would never permit that.

I think it was just a ploy to make it look like that they didn't burn JVG too badly.

I'm impressed with the defensive intensity that Adelman's teams have based on your chart Durvasa Thats not bad at all. Although it did become very low during his tenure in Sacramento. Hope he can bring to us the kind of offense he brought Sacramento and the kind of defense he had in Portland before.
