What is the only year in the salary cap era where an NFL team managed to buy a Superbowl? Why, 1994, of course... Steve Young's Superbowl year. That year the 49'ers picked up Ricky Jackson, Deion Sanders, Richard Dent, Tim Harris (former Packer), Rhett Hall, Ken Norton, and Ed McCaffrey as "free agents." How did they stay below the salary cap you ask? Creative Accounting, of course. They signed players in the prime of their careers to short term, league minimum contracts that contained huge bonuses contingent on winning the Superbowl. And THAT, is why I don't consider Steve Young one of the all time greats. That Superbowl win and "getting out of Montana's shadow" were the events that made Young an elite QB in a lot of experts' eyes. And now you know the whole truth...if you didn't already. (And yes, what they did wasn't technically cheating. I just think it makes Young's win a little less impressive than people make it out to be.)

Man, your posts are off today. LOOK AT YOUNGS #s. HE IS GREAT. They did get sactioned for cheating on that team i thought. Not enough to take away win. That team had same amount, if not less talent than youngs super bowl teams. Farve made deals to win his super bowl, and that is flat out cheating. Do I have proof? Only the strahan incident as evidence to character. I am sure it will all come out.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>But roth is more of a HOF than palmer? And, that if you compare them based on their careers "so far," there is no comparison...Roethlisberger is in the lead.
I may be mistaken but didn't the Broncos get find a few years after winning the SB for cheating the cap. I remember it just cause they should of played the game over LOL. I think they got fined heavy but there was talk about starting to take away draft picks for anyone screwing the system

With Young's local connection, they could do know wrong as far as the local media here. I still get sick. They got their comeuppance. As for the "Creative accounting", The owners at the time (The DeBartolos) were an Italian-American family from Youngstown, OH. I could swear it was allegdly implied there was a mob connection. Al Capone was brought down because of "Creative accounting" as were the Niners. I love irony.
Six seasons with a QB rating over a 100 with a min of 270 attempts is what made Steve Young an elite QB in my eyes.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Six seasons with a QB rating over a 100 with a min of 270 attempts is what made Steve Young an elite QB in my eyes.</div> Impressive, yes. But without the Superbowl ring, would Young have been a first ballot hall of famer? Nope.
Bill Walsh once said, "Joe Montana was the product of a system & Marino was a system". The same logic that was applied to Joe can be applied to Steve.

Both ran the triple option in H.S. and went on to run te WCO in the pros. Both were a little bit reckless and threw caution to the wind early in their NFL careers. Steve played for Tampa for awhile & Brett rode the pines in Atlanta.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Better player than farve.</div> Hah hah...good one. What's Favre's all time record against Young? I think it's like 7-1. Favre is the reason that Young never got to the Superbowl again.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Let the packer spin begin</div> Well, we can start "the spin" with the fact that Favre has completed more passes than Steve Young even attempted. I could argue Favre vs. Young til the end of time...I choose not to. :surrender:

I won't say that Steve Young is better than Brett Favre, but I do think that Steve Young earned his spot in the Hall and was, without a doubt, an elite QB.

Steve Young is a better running QB and a better left handed QB than Brett Favre. 2. Favre has admittedly cheated on his wife. I've actually witnessed this in person... 3. No. Can't go that far... I think you'll find at any stadium you'll find the rude fans. I see a lot less at the Packer games then the Vikings games. As far as Youngs QB rating the QB's that doesn't last long in his career will always help his rating cause he was done in his prime. Kurt Warner also may end with one of the highest QB ratings. Does that make him a HOF?

Here is some random post I found while reading some forums recently. This dated back to 2002. If you read through these, they still hold true 4 years later....granted, the Niners get more TV time nowadays thanks to the recent success of the Rams and Seahawks. I agree, their division has always been very soft. ********************* There are many reasons why the 49ers are over-rated as a team AND an organization, but here are a few: 1. Although the NFC West FINALLY has more than one competitive team, it took over 30 YEARS to get there. 2. The 49ers have had a FEAST on this division which spotted them 6 wins a years for almost 3 decades! Dallas has been to an unprecedented 8 Super Bowls, yet 49er fans fans are quick to say "getting there is not enough, good teams WIN when they get there". Well, using that same logic, GOOD teams WIN AFC/NFC Championships when they get there. The 49ers have had TWELVE opportunities to get to the Super Bowl. In spite of playing an overwhelming majority AT HOME, they are only 5-7 (.416) in NFC Championship games while Dallas is 8-8 (.500). 3. Great teams win NFC/AFC Championships "ON THE ROAD" - the 49ers have done it only once (1-3) but Dallas has done it four times (4-6)! 4. How bad is the NFC West? Since 1971, this pitiful division has averaged above .500 only 10 times in 26 YEARS years during the regular season! Of the 30 WORST NFC teams in the history of the Super Bowl, almost HALF of the teams are from the NFC West - what a surprise!! 5. For fours years (in recent history) the 49ers FINALLY played competitive teams in their division (Panthers, Falcons, Rams), they were reduced to WILD CARD material. They even got STOMPED in Georgia! Duh! In 2001, we can expect more of the same... 6. They are NOT in the NFC East (in case you haven't noticed, the NFC East has WON 5 of the last 9 Super Bowls this decade and about 1/3 of ALL Super Bowls ever played!!!). 7. Of the 30 BEST teams in Super Bowl history, the NFC East is represented by THREE teams - Cowboys, Redskins and Giants. The NFC West - well, you figure it out! 8. Of the 30 BEST teams in Super Bowl history, NONE of the 49ers teams have an opponent ranking of greater than .488!! Of the 30 teams, the BEST 49er team is #19 from the TOP in opponent ranking (see 1994). The NFC East is near the TOP of this list in schedule strength - 3rd, 4th and 7th with opponent rankings of .531, .528 and .514 respectively. These teams won championships while facing a MUCH tougher schedule - CONSISTENTLY! 9. They played the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl 29 - one of the WORST AFC teams in Super Bowl history! 10. They are not the only team with 5 Super Bowl wins - Dallas also has 5. Based on item 9, we should count the 49ers last Super Bowl win as 1/2! 11. They never faced the Steelers of the 70's in a Super Bowl - the LAST competitive dynasty in the AFC. 12. They consistently beat bad teams while frequently losing to the FEW good teams they face during the regular season. In (1998), in the 16 games during the regular season, the 49ers only played 8 teams with a winning record - the result was 3-5 - typical! Throughout their history, the 49ers have a LOSING record against WINNING teams - unfortunately, because of their pitiful division and poor NFL scheduling policies (TV viewers LOVE Dallas - even when they lose!), the 49ers rarely play more than 6 winning teams a year during the regular season.
