Am I the only one who is intrigued by wild animals and nature? I have the National Geographic channel on my sattelite and it is one of the best channels that I've ever come across. Learning about these animals and thier behavioural and physical characteristics are astounding.

Yesterday, there was a peice about the evolution of the hippopotamus and how Hippos work and it was simply fascinating.

My favourite animal documantary by far has to be when one man filmed in Africa for a year while a drought took place. The length at which these animals went for survival was unbelieveable. Lions, Hyenas and leopards are perhaps the most intriguing species as far as documentaries go.

There was one instance in which a hyena cub was injured and a male lion saw him struggling. The lion approached him slowly, and slowly killed him but refused to eat him. He sat next to the cub for the next 5-10 minutes and just watched him and went about in spraying his scent on the area to let the hyenas know that a lion had killed him.

There was another segement yesterday with two hippos fighting and a young hippo managed to take over the territory of an old hippo; biting off his tail in the process and completely overwhelming the old hippo during the fight. For 45 minutes straight the young hippo was manhandling the old one, even though the old one never fought back. After the old hippo stopped moving completely the younger one walked back, looked at the part of the old hippo's body that he had just bitten off and was now bare (his tail) and proceeded to open his mouth wide like in a show of triumph. He subsquently climbed on top of the old hippo who just lay there and in another show of triumph appeared to stand over him, similar to how some humans stand over someone fallen with one foot on thier chest. It was pretty damn cool.

Yeah, I love nature, and especially the wild like this. I really enjoyed seeing the series Planet Earth on the Discovery Channel. I ordered the whole DVD set and have been rewatching it every chance I get. There's always something new to discover.

I always enjoy Shark Week and March of the Penguins, Grizzly Man, and other notable documentaries have become some of my favorites.

Though the best thing I've just about ever seen is a documentary called Baraka. It's got a mixture of not just the wild and animals in particular but rather also people, and different tribes filled in with amazing shots of landscapes and just the overall world. It's one of my favorites and if you're into that kind of stuff, I highly recommend it.

I've never seen that footage before but that was pretty cool. I've seen other instances in which buffaloes scare off lions though. It's the horns that the lions fear more then anything. The one buffalo who attacked the lion and the lion flying in the air when being hit by the horns was pretty amazing footage. I'm assuming the lions there were pretty young though. I love the gang mentality of the buffaloes, it's very similar to the hyenas who do much more damage in packs.

I just watched the Antarctica Planet Earth episode and it was amazing. I had no idea how hard it was to be a polar bear, swimming for days to find food only to be unable to kill a walrus and die consequently. It sucks that with global warming and all that their land is going to shrink and shrink until they become extinct at the poles.

Yeah I watch some of these, depends what its on, and how interesting it is though, I find the ones about Killer Whales pretty awesome, how they come up on to the beach and grab the seals.

Man, I just saw a great documentary about the rain forest and its inhabitants. I never knew chimpanzees were cannibalistic.

I love nature channels and shows. Love Animal Planet, Discovery and all the rest. Of course though, the best is to experience it for yourself. For instance the Eagles' Dungeon that I posted about a few days ago. Absolutely stunning to see all those birds.

I wasn't in the country for that and was really looking forward to it. Wasn't it about different cities or countries highlighted? Any information you can share? Detailed opinion?
