Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is part of a group considering formation of a football league that would compete with the NFL for players drafted lower than the second round.

The league, still very much in the preliminary stage, would play its games on Friday nights. The NFL does not play then because of the potential conflict with high school football.

"It's a pretty simple concept," Cuban said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "We think there is more demand for pro football than supply."

The proposal was first disclosed by The New York Times on its Web site, which said it was the idea of Bill Hambrecht, a Wall Street investor who was a minority partner in the Oakland Invaders of the USFL, which played in the spring from 1983-85. Sharon Smith, a spokeswoman for Hambrecht and Company, had no comment and said Hambrecht was traveling and unavailable to talk about the idea.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said he was aware of the proposed league, but had no further comment.

There have been numerous leagues that have tried to compete with the NFL and a few that actually played games, starting with the AFL, which began in 1960 and fully merged with the NFL a decade later. It included such current franchises as New England, Oakland, Kansas City, San Diego, Buffalo, the New York Jets and Denver.

More recently came the World Football League in the early 1970s, which raided the NFL for such stars as Larry Csonka. Then came the USFL, which played in the spring before folding after receiving only $3 in an antitrust "victory" over the NFL.</div>

There's no way they could compete for players picked on Day 1 of the draft and I doubt they could bring in anyone of significance. Sure they might be able to offer bigger contracts initially, but there will always be bigger earning potential in the NFL and all of those players have legit pro futures. I think the CFL was the last league to really compete with the NFL for players. Quite a few first rounders signed up north and other significant players would stop off in the CFL first. But that was around the 70's and the balance of power has long since shifted towards the NFL.

Cuban's got it all wrong. There's more of a demand for NFL football, than there is a supply. They've got a stranglehold on professional football and there's no way people turn away from it for what will most likely be a substandard product.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the sport. However, I know all about the NFL and the product they present to their fans. They do a wonderful job with that and it would be difficult to see if anyone can compete with everything that they have to offer.

The NFL is wayyy to big. Even if he gets this thing running, it will flop horribly. There's no competing with the NFL

Cuban should use his money and fame for something that can benefit all of society. I'd like to see him take on insurance companies. Health insurance, car insurance, life insurance etc.

Didn't there used to ba the American Football League or something? It was actually competing really well with the NFL, but ended up bankrupted for some reason...

This would be stupid, I think its impossible to build a league to compete with any of the major league sports that exist today. The XFL was the biggest joke of a thing I have ever seen.

There is to much legacy, records, money, establishment, etc.. Thats why there will never be a new league to overcome the nfl or any of the major sport league's. They could get some viewers and fans if they played during nfl's off season but Im not sure if that is their plan. This will be the next xfl just like everyone is saying.

He dosen't have that much money. I can see what Vince McMahon tried to do, it was football but it was different. It didn't work, but at least it was somewhat original. But Cuban is gonna make a inferior (and very similar) league and try to compete with the biggest sport in the US.

He has enough to get it started. Cuban with other investors could easily make a difference.
