<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Van Gundy arrives in Sacramento By Ira Winderman South Florida Sun-Sentinel Posted June 6 2007, 4:55 PM EDT Former Heat coach Stan Van Gundy arrived Wednesday in Sacramento, according to an NBA source, and appears to be on the verge of becoming the next coach of the Kings. Van Gundy, who had been linked for days to the Orlando Magic coaching vacancy that Billy Donovan initially accepted and then bypassed in favor of a return to the University of Florida, previously had met twice with Kings management and ownership. The Kings fired Eric Musselman after one year with the team at the end of the season. Van Gundy had been non-committal as recently as Tuesday regarding the vacancies in Orlando and Sacramento. However, once the Heat requested compensation from the Magic, those talks hit a roadblock. </div> http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basketb...story?track=rss Sounds like he's about to officially become the Kings head coach. Great so now who are the Magic's people? PJ Carlisimo and..... Rick Carlisle? or is it PJ or bust?
Donnovan is a joke. We need to get rid of him as soon ASAP and get someone that actually wants to coach the magic. I mean Otis Smith shouldnt even consider changing his contract. Who wants a coach, coaching your players that doesnt even wanna be there?!? Now as for a replacement Stan Van Gundy sounds good. But I'm not sold on him quite yet. I mean he's good and all but he's only coached 2 years or so, and he had Dwayne wade one year and shaq the next right? I say we look at a solid proven defensive minded coach in JEFF Van Gundy. Stans brother. Now you may say no not jeff! he never makes the second round! Well reaon 1...had tmac the second round curse, and 2...it was in the western conference! im shocked no one has even talked about jeff yet.
Welcome to JustBBall, The Walrus. I look forward to reading your posts. Jeff Van Gundy is a good option because he's a defensive minded coach. I'm just speechless at this point because we went from having both Donovan and Van Gundy as options to having virtually nobody left. We've talked about interviewing Carlisimo but we have to wait until the Finals are over to do that. Carlisle hasn't shown interest in any of the available coaching jobs as far as I know of so I haven't really gotten my hopes up about getting him. Paul Silas is another option, what do you guys think of him?
thanks swish, i used to be a member long time ago. but yeah rick carlile would seem liek a good candidate as well but it seems o me that all the coaches that would be a good fit, arent interested. for example the day that Jeff Van Gundy was fired, later that night he signed a espn contract and commented the utah spurs game! lol **BTW- Correct me if im wrong, but if we go after STAN van gundy...dont we have to give up a second round draft pick for compensation? i dont think its worth it for him.
Hustler are you serious? He didn't seem to turn out very well for the Raptors, although he had a difficult mix of players to mesh together (no real centers, Alvin was hurt, injuries, etc)
<div class="quote_poster">The Walrus Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">thanks swish, i used to be a member long time ago.</div> Oh really? well welcome back. <div class="quote_poster">The Walrus Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">but yeah rick carlile would seem liek a good candidate as well but it seems o me that all the coaches that would be a good fit, arent interested.</div> Yeah, I would love to have Rick Carlisle. He did a great job building that Pistons team before Larry Brown came in and got most of the credit. He also did a great job with the Pacers early on before tons of their players started getting into trouble. Luckily, we don't have many egos or troublemakers on this team so he wouldn't have that issue here in Orlando. <div class="quote_poster">The Walrus Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">for example the day that Jeff Van Gundy was fired, later that night he signed a espn contract and commented the utah spurs game! lol **BTW- Correct me if im wrong, but if we go after STAN van gundy...dont we have to give up a second round draft pick for compensation? i dont think its worth it for him.</div> Yeah, Jeff definitely knows his stuff. However, the one thing that concerns me is his track record in the playoffs. He hasn't been very successful in the playoffs throughout his career so that worries me. If we want a coach that can take us to the next level, I'm not sure if Van Gundy is the best option. And yes, if we wanted to hire Stan, we would have needed to give Miami one of our second round draft picks or cash. Reports were saying that Riley was leaning towards a pick though so you're right, maybe we were about to overpay for him just to hide our embarrassment from the Donovan situation. In a recent blog on Orlando Sentinel.com, Schmitz mentioned Larry Brown. Thoughts?
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">the one thing that concerns me is his track record in the playoffs. Plus think of what Jef Van Gundy did over the past few years with major injuries and major lineup changes. Plus dont blame just Van gundy for not makin the second round. Ever since Tmac cursed himself a couple years back on the magic against the Pistons, "It feels good to be in the second round" <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">In a recent blog on Orlando Sentinel.com, Schmitz mentioned Larry Brown. Good point about him being in the Western Conference. I would have no problem with interviewing Jeff. He'd be a good candidate and either him or Carlisle would make me happy. And yeah, Brown is rumored to coach everywhere. I doubt he comes to Orlando, who he has no ties with, of all places.
Rumour is that Carlisle's set on taking a year off and signing after that. Man, this sucks for you guys.
Donovan has officially been released. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">At 10pm on June 6, the Orlando Magic released a statement to all media outlets, including RealGM, saying that head coach Billy Donovan is now free to re-join the University of Florida. As our signing of Billy Donovan showed, we are committed to winning a championship. We have the legal right to hold Billy to the contract he signed, but with him having a change of heart about leaving college basketball, we want him at the University of Florida. We have granted him permission to break his commitment and return to the Gators.</div> Source Schmitz blog about Donovan costing us Van Gundy as well. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> The collateral damage done by silly Billy Donovan can't be estimated by any insurance company. Now it looks as if Billy's 'Bout-face has cost the Magic Stan Van Gundy. Our sister paper, the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, reported that Van Gundy had arrived in Sacramento on Wednesday. Ira Winderman wrote that Van Gundy was on the verge of taking the Kings' job. When Donovan bailed, the Magic turned to Van Gundy, their runnerup choice. But Van Gundy is still under contract to the Miami Heat as a consultant through next June, and Heat Coach and prez Pat Riley wanted compensation for Van Gundy from Orlando. Apparently, the price was too high for the Magic to pay --- or they decided to go in a different direction in their coaching search at the last second. Not likely. The Magic offered Van Gundy a job and he wanted to be in Orlando. If Riley wanted three second-round draft picks, not a big deal. But if wanted a future first-rounder for Van Gundy, that might have been the deal-breaker for GM Otis Smith. Riley didn't ask for compensation from the Kings, because they are not in the Eastern Conference. Blame Riley for shafting the Magic and Van Gundy (again), but Riley was playing the hardball card. Of course, Riley is ruthless. He nudged Stan out of the Heat coaching chair after almost three seasons, and led the team to a title parade while Van Gundy had to watch. But all this mayhem for the Magic can be traced to Donovan's unprofessional exit.</div> Source Brian Schmitz also put up a blog about our continued search for a decent coach. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> The Magic have taken the round-about way to get to back square one in their coaching search. With Billy Donovan gone and now Stan Van Gundy showing up in Sacramento, the Magic will have to turn to other candidates such as P.J. Carlesimo. Carlesimo was the short list, presumably behind Donovan and Van Gundy. Are they opening it up again --- or will they go to Carlesimo? Carlesimo was the head coach at Portland and Golden State, and he is currently Greg Poppovich's lead assistant with the San Antonio Spurs. Here's the catch: If the Magic want P.J., they are going to have to wait, with the Spurs beginning a run in the Finals Thursday against the Cleveland Cavs. Other candidates: Larry Brown, who's been everywhere; Rick Carlisle, former Detroit and Indiana coach; Terry Porter, former coach at Milwaukee; Brian Shaw, Lakers assistant; Kurt Rambis, Lakers assistant.</div> Source I've heard that Shaw is interested but I don't know much about him. Any Laker fans want to fill me in, please? Also, if we sign Terry Porter, who did absolutely horrible with Milwaukee, I will scream.
glad we got rid of Donnovan for good. IMO we should fine the hell outta him, but orlando wont do it cuz it would be a PR nightmare. personally i say go for it. lol
Billy Donovan statement regarding the Orlando Magic: "I have had and will continue to have the highest respect for the Orlando Magic, its organization, and its ownership. I realized in less than 24 hours after signing a contract with the Magic that I had made a mistake that had nothing to do with the Magic. Instead, I realized that, in my heart, I belonged in college basketball. As soon as I realized that, I contacted the Magic immediately to let them know. I have enormous respect for the Magic - including the DeVos family, the management, the team and the fans. In these circumstances, it would have been entirely unfair to the Magic and their fans to have continued on. Although this has been a difficult time for everyone, for which I am profoundly sorry, in my heart I know that this is the right thing for the Magic and for me. It's my admiration for the whole Magic organization that led me to this course of action. I believe that the Magic has a great future ahead of them, and I wish them all the best." I expected him to make a statement apologizing for all actions taken and it's a classy way to get out, but still doesn't make him right.
Dear Mr. Donovan, You're the reason we are the laughing stock of the league right now, you're the reason I can't turn on ESPN without hearing about our troubles, you're the reason we lost Van Gundy to the Kings, you're the reason we're still looking for a coach, you're the reason tons of fans are unhappy, you're the reason over 250 people wasted money on season tickets, you're the reason we may not stay in Orlando, you're the reason we may not get a new arena, you're the reason Darko may bolt from Orlando, and last but not least, you're the reason a free agent may choose a better run franchise to sign with over us. An apology doesn't cut it you bastard.
Poor Orlando. You're like the pornstars of the league, always being screwed. I'll never complain about Kobe being screwed again. So is it basically down to who?
<div class="quote_poster">The Walrus Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">but whatchu talkin bout willis?? Magic leavin orlando??? say what?!</div> There has been talk for the last couple of seasons that the Magic may move to another city such as Oklahoma City or Kansas City if an arena deal can't get done. Since Billy Donovan left, it's making us look even worse and it's going to be even harder for us to convince the city to fund the arena. So that means Donovan's exit may ultimately lead in the Magic leaving Orlando. It wouldn't be all his fault but a lot of the blame definitely falls on his shoulders since hiring him would have almost guaranteed that the new arena be built.
Official: Van Gundy Picks Orlando <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">ESPN - Stan Van Gundy met with the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night but has decided to sign with the Orlando Magic instead according to ESPN's Jim Gray. Van Gundy flew to Sacramento Wednesday to look around the area and chat with the team about their vacant head coaching position. Many had expected he would sign with Sacramento but this is now not the case. Van Gundy would replace Billy Donovan in Orlando, who quit after a few days on the job. It is unclear what if any compisation the Magic will have to pay the Miami Heat to let Van Gundy out of his contract as a consultant with the team. </div> Source: RealGM via ESPN Beat you Swish! Hopefully Rambis gets the Kings' job and we can push a Walton for Artest deal.
Yes! I just jumped out of my seat and freaked out. This is awesome news. I was thinking that Donovan not only screwed us once but twice since Stan Van Gundy was visiting Sacramento. Whew! This makes losing Billy a lot easier because Van Gundy is a great coach who actually has NBA experience. Hopefully he use Dwight just liked he used Shaq in Miami. I'm so happy right now. Stan Van Gundy was the first coach I mentioned during the season when I people asked who I wanted to replace Hill. Look it up! This is great and Van Gundy should help this team a lot. Plus, now I can use my SVG avatar! Hopefully we just have to give up cash for him because losing a draft pick would hurt. If we do have to give up a pick though, hopefully it's #54 since that's our last one. Brian Schmitz just posted a blog about this for those of you who want to read it. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">This time, the Magic got what they wanted. It certainly wasn't as sexy as their first choice, but the wildest, wackiest coaching search in their history has ended. The Magic signed Stan Van Gundy early Thursday morning to coach the team, only hours after officially divorcing Billy Donovan. Van Gundy was the runnerup choice to Donovan, but became the Magic's go-to coach after Donovan bailed on a five-year, $27.5 million deal last weekend. Van Gundy made the Magic nervous, as he had a standing offer to coach the Sacramento Kings. He flew out to Sacramento with his wife, Kim, on Wednesday to look around the area, but wanted to coach the Magic all along. Holding up the deal to sign Van Gundy was the Miami Heat, who wanted compensation for signing Van Gundy, the former Heat coach. Van Gunday has been serving as a Heat consultant since being replaced by current coach Pat Riley and had one more year left on his deal. The Magic's compensation to the Heat is believed to be a second round pick this season, with perhaps another pick in the future.</div> Source Two draft picks for a coach? What do you guys think?
