Pat Riley demanded the Magic give compensation for Stan Van Gundy. I think the Heat are going to get cash and a 2nd rounder. The Lakers should demand the same from whatever team Rambis ends up with.

I think it's certainly feasible and definitely a fair thing to do. If they want one our assistant coaches, why not get something out of him? It all makes sense to me.

Check out what Miami received for SVG. Our situation is similar, we're allowing out top assistant to go to a division rival. The precedence is set, Sacramento needs to give us compensation, Sacramento needs to give us Ron Artest!

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Preying on the opportunity, the state rival Heat originally asked for $1 million dollars and a first-round 2008 pick from Orlando for the right to hire Van Gundy, who had a year left with them as a consultant.

The Magic had one of those dropped-call experiences as Heat Coach and President Pat Riley spewed his demand, or ransom, over the phone. General Manager Otis Smith said he’d get back to them.

After more back-and-forth wrangling, the Heat ended up taking one of the Magic’s three second-round picks this year, No. 39, and agreed to swap first-round positions in the 2008 draft (as long as Orlando wasn’t in the lottery).</div>

Our compensation should be Luke Walton for Ron Artest straight up. (sign and trade)

I agree with you 100% that should be our compensation.

If I'm an assistant coach about to accept a position, couldn't I just quit my current job before I sign the new contract?

I don't think that's very honorable, but I guess you could. Couldn't the current team pursue legal actions though?

I think that the Lakers should just get artest for the compensation of Rambis. But it would be better if Rambis doesn't leave at all

That would benefit the Kings more than it would the Lakers. They need play makers, Ron Artest isn't one of them. While we would obviosly benefit tremendously from Artest on the team (until he went crazy) we'd also lose a lot in Waltons experience and skills.

I'd say our comensation should be McKie for Artest. Basically they are doing us a huge favor and we give them a head coach. They scratch our back we scratch theirs.

^Our most beloved and greatest G.M. won't have the balls to even ask about a compensation in the first place.

We add Rambis to our roster, and trade him straight up for Artest. Then he can retire with the Kings, and become a coach. Brilliant yet simple, eh?

Good idea, I think he can still bang 8-9 rebounds a night.

The difference is that Van Gundy resigned with years left on his contract and will be taking the same position he left, only a different organization … Rambis, on the other hand, is leaving for a promotion (keep in mind he was on interim, even in the lockout year). I’m almost certain there is some clause on Rambis’ contract restricting any barrier for leaving for a head coaching job, emphasis on promotion.

I thought SVG was demoted to a scout or assistant in Miami, after Riley took over as headcoach?

I also thought Rambis was under contract for another year?

nah, officially, Van Gundy resigned. As a head coach who quits while still under contract, he can’t just go to another team for the same position without the new team giving back some sort of compensation. Otherwise, a contract means nothing. It was like the Larry Brown situation a few years back. Kurt probably has time left on his contract, but I would imagine as an assistant who is aspiring to be a head coach somewhere, he would’ve taken the measures of asking for an out clause before signing his current contract in the event of a promotion opportunity, which im sure is the case.

Rambis may not get the head job after all. According to a headline on NBATV, the Kings are interviewing the assitant coach of the Kings.
