<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Orlando Magic?s wild, wacky coaching search began with a $27.5 million deal, stalled during a million-dollar compensation demand and finally ended early Thursday morning after they received a fax at $1.50 a page from a Kinko?s in Sacramento, Ca.

The final day of the excruciating, exhausting chase involved three NBA teams, one prominent college program, two NBA coaches, one college coach and a half-dozen attorneys, who?s hourly billing rates were unknown.

How the Magic parted with Billy Donovan and signed Stan Van Gundy away from the Sacramento Kings at the 11th hour . . . after backing down Van Gundy?s team, the Miami Heat, from an original compensation demand of $1 million and a first-round draft pick . . . is the stuff of Hollywood scripts.

Those close to the Magic recounted exclusively to the Sentinel the emotional journey.

The club had three legal agreements working at once during an incredibly tense, nerve-racking three-hour period on Wednesday: Donovan?s separation agreement, the Heat?s compensation package and Van Gundy?s contract.

Donovan and the Magic worked out the details of the agreement after he begged out of his five-year, $27.5 million contract he signed to coach the Magic. One clause stipulates that he can not take another NBA coaching job for five years.

The Magic had tried to persuade Donovan to reconsider for days. They visited him personally, and three Magic officials and owner Rich DeVos, spoke with him an estimated 40 times on the phone from Saturday to Monday.

Finally, on Sunday night, a breakthrough: Donovan told the Magic he would sleep on it. But when he woke up Monday morning, he said his heart was with the Gators.

The Magic tried everything to get him to change his mind, even offering to shorten the length of his five-year contract.

Preying on the opportunity, the state rival Heat originally asked for $1 million dollars and a first-round 2008 pick from Orlando for the right to hire Van Gundy, who had a year left with them as a consultant.

The Magic had one of those dropped-call experiences as Heat Coach and President Pat Riley spewed his demand, or ransom, over the phone. General Manager Otis Smith said he?d get back to them.

After more back-and-forth wrangling, the Heat ended up taking one of the Magic?s three second-round picks this year, No. 39, and agreed to swap first-round positions in the 2008 draft (as long as Orlando wasn?t in the lottery).

The Magic-Heat rivalry has been turned up a notch.

Former Heat coach Van Gundy had offers from the Kings and the Magic, but he wanted the Magic job. However, he was determined not to wait on a Heat-Magic standoff, and flew to Sacramento on Wednesday with his wife, Kim, to get a feel for the area in case the Magic didn?t come through.

Van Gundy was prepared to accept the Kings offer and even brought a suit with him for a news conference in case he was introduced as the Kings' new coach.

The Magic called after they resolved the compensation issues with the Heat and he faxed his contract from a Sacramento Kinko?s.

The Van Gundys then hustled to the airport to try to catch a flight to Orlando. But with the Heat having held up the proceedings in Orlando, the closest they could get to the Eastern Seaboard was New York, and they hopped aboard.

He signed a three-year deal with a partial guarantee on the fourth year, but it is estimated to be a total of $16 million for four years. He is expected to be introduced at 5 p.m. today as the Magic?s coach.

The Magic?s coaching saga began last Saturday at 9:50 a.m. in Orlando, when Donovan called the Magic to tell them he wanted out of his 22-hour old contract he signed Friday to be their head coach.

It ended Thursday night at 12:45 a.m., Orlando time, when Van Gundy faxed in his signatured contract to replace Donovan as head coach.

It got dicey for the Magic in between, as they did not work out a compensation deal with the Heat --- Van Gundy?s team --- until 12:15 a.m. Orlando time.

If the Heat had wanted dawdled any more, or Riley simply refused the package, the Magic would have re-opened their outlandish coaching search, surely testing their sanity.</div>

So do we swap 1sts regardless? What if the Magic happen to win the division next year over the Heat, do we still swap 1sts? That's pretty ridiculous to give up for a coach.

The Heat have the option to swap if we aren't in the lottery

So in other words, the Heat get the higher pick regardless.

What if the Magic are in the lottery, do the Heat get the 2009 pick instead?

They get 2008 2nd rounder. If the Magic are better than the Heat, they also get the 2nd rounder.

They get the 39th pick in this years draft(our 1st 2nd rounder) then they have the right to swap firsts with the Magic as long as the Magic aren't in the lottery in next years draft. If the Magic are in the lottery or they choose not to use the right to swap picks(Magic better than them or if it's only a 1-2 spot difference and they decide to just get another 2nd), then the Heat get one of our 2nds for next year.

So best case scenario for the Magic is 2 2nds. Worst case scenario is 1 2nd and the right to swap 1sts next year.

It's better than a million dollars and a 1st round pick (What Miami (Riley) originally wanted)
