<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Game 1 of the NBA finals drew the lowest rating ever for an opening-game in prime time, dropping 19 percent from last year. The San Antonio Spurs ' 85-76 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night earned a 6.3 rating and 11 share on ABC. The previous low was a 6.4/11 in 2003. Last year's Game 1 between Miami and Dallas earned a 7.8 rating and 14 share.</div> Source
a few of the reasons for this A. stop starting the games @ 9 eastern time B. they should've started the series on tuesday instead of making people wait C. they should've been showing Lebron more on national television (ABC) throughout the playoffs....the guy is supposed to be the face of your league yet all of his ECF games (including the historic game 5 performance) were all on cable....there are still a lot of people who don't own cable television and you add a whole nother audience when you broadcast on reg. t.v.....when the NBA was on NBC you'd get the Conference Finals games from both conferences and overall you got more games during the reg. season (double and triple headers) and more playoff games (double and triple headers through the 1st and 2nd rounds).....this is the way people get familiar with athletes and teams..... D. Cleveland and S.A. are small markets E. Spurs are boring and outside of Bron and Boobie so are the Cavs. F. The NBA markets the individual to the point where it has came back to bite them in the nuts...........they got their money out of M.J. while he was here, but now that he's gone they're seeing the other side of that double edged sword. EDIT Game 2 will be lower because they're going up against the Sopranos..............yet another genius market move by the NBA............
Then the NBA makes us wait until Sunday night for Game 2. They will have to compete with the Sopranos season finale. The Dream, I think reason F is the main issue with the NBA today. Since Jordan retired the league has been trying to find a new face for the league, but so far no one's been able to have the impact Jordan had. The NBA needs to start marketing the teams again.
yeah MJ came along at the perfect time and no matter how dearly the league tries they won't be able to clone someone like him.....I'd like to see commercials letting Kobe be Kobe, Lebron be Lebron, and Wade being Wade....let these guys develop their own identies and let the teams develop them also.....
Why the game 1 rating slip because the Spurs are boring if it was Spurs/Pistons it would of been worst.
The main reasons last year's ratings were higher: 1. Nobody knew who would win - the teams were closer in terms of talent level. 2. One of the team's best player was a WHITE GUY. 3. Shaq was playing. Even people who don't follow NBA are intrigued by Shaq if only to be in awe of how big a dude he is.
Spurs don't sell seats (or bring in viewers), they win championships. They're efficient but not intruiging unless you're a baksetball fanatic like myself and like watching different playing styles and good classic bball. I'm surprised it was so low however due to the fact that LeBron was in the finals. I guess everyone knew/knows it's going to be Spurs domination.
