MILLSTONE TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Denver Nuggets player J.R. Smith and another man were seriously injured Saturday when the sport utility vehicle Smith was driving collided with a car.

Smith and the unidentified passenger were ejected from the SUV in the crash, which occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Stagecoach Road in Millstone Township, said Sgt. Stephen Jones, a state police spokesman.

The passenger -- who had serious head wounds -- was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Hospital in Neptune, while Smith was taken there via ambulance.

Further details on their injuries were not immediately available Saturday night.

Smith's vehicle apparently went through a stop sign, Jones said, and collided with the other car. The driver of that vehicle and two other people in the SUV were injured and taken to CentraState Medical Center in Freehold, but their injuries were not considered serious.

The 21-year-old Smith was a star player at Lakewood High School and St. Benedict's Prep in New Jersey. He averaged 13.0 points in 63 games this season.

They said the injuries aren't life threatening and he talked to team officials, so it doesn't sound that bad.....

Seems like the guy wasn't wearing his seatbelt...

Anyways, I wish him best of luck, and hopefully he recovers quickly. I hope to god he wasn't driving under the influence, it will just be more bad press for this guy, and will show how stupid he really is.

Nuggets' Guard J.R. Smith is Going to be Okay

Nuggets: Guard going to be OK

Nuggets guard J.R. Smith and two unidentified passengers were injured Saturday after Smith's sport utility vehicle collided with another car in Millstone Township, N.J.

Smith, who lives in Monmouth County, N.J., was not seriously injured, according to a Nuggets spokesman.

Smith's vehicle went through a stop sign and hit another car, New Jersey State Police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Jones told The Associated Press.

Details of Smith's injuries were not immediately available.

The Newark Star-Ledger reported that, according to Smith's father, Earl, the 21-year-old was "fine - he was thrown from the vehicle, but there's no injuries. He was with two friends, coming home from a barbershop."

One of Smith's passengers reportedly was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Hospital in Neptune, N.J., with serious head injuries.

The driver of the second vehicle and the second passenger in Smith's SUV also were injured and taken to a hospital in Freehold, N.J., The Star-Ledger reported, but their injuries were not serious.

Nuggets spokesman Eric Sebastian said the organization had been in touch with the Smith family and said the guard is "going to be OK," his injuries are "nothing that would affect his basketball career," and that the Nuggets' thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Smith, 21, averaged 13.0 points in 63 games of an up-and-down season with the Nuggets.

JR Smith showed massive amounts of potential through this entire season. I hope he's okay, he could bring another great player to the league. If I was a Denver Nuggets fan I'd be checking the RealGM wiretap and ESPN.com 24/7, this guy could very well be the second option after Iverson retires. He compliments Carmelo, hopefully he won't have any sort of career damaging injury.

Glad he's okay, my bad for missing the article. However, I still want to hear the extent of his injuries and if he'll be ready to go by November. Hopefully info about that will be up within tommorow.

However, sadly, the NJ man who he crashed into was killed.

Karl offers full support after crash

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Nuggets coach George Karl said Saturday he has spoken with guard J.R. Smith and intends to lend the support the young player needs.

Asked how the conversation went, Karl said: "It's just a supportive, 'Hey, J.R., learn, hang in there, get through it. We're here for you. We're here for your family. We're here for whatever you need us to do from a human side. And the basketball side, we don't have to worry about that right now. Let's just make sure you get straight and get together."'

Smith was the driver when his sport utility vehicle was hit by another car June 9, throwing Smith and a passenger out of the vehicle. The passenger, Andre Bell, died two days later from severe head wounds. The accident was caused when Smith drove around a vehicle in front of him at a stop sign in Millstone Township, N.J.

He was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign and another for improper passing. Additional charges could come as a result of an investigation.

Smith is expected back in Denver sometime this week to meet with Nuggets front-office personnel and doctors.

Karl said he is more worried about Smith's mental state.

"I know if it happened to me, it would be very difficult," Karl said. "It's the mental and physical thing of rebuilding his psyche and rebuilding his confidence. I think we all know it's been a difficult time.

"We're just going to be there in the summertime and win-lose is not in the game, it's the support and get better. Right now, supporting him is probably better than getting (him) on the basketball court." </div>

Man, this is similar to when Dany Heatly killed his teammate, it sucks. I'm sure Smith feels horrible, hopefully this will motivate him, and he can move on.

Didn't he crash one of Melo's cars during the season?

Maybe he has some issues with driving.
