I played hockey when I was in elementary school and could actually name most of the star players of the time (Pavel Bure, Selane, Kariya, Gilmore), but as I got older, I got more interested in basketball and soccer. Now, I don't know any of the younger star players aside from Jason Spezza and that kid from the Penguins (Crosby, I believe). Last I heard, Selane was like 35 years old.

A lot of urban youth are criminals, is that not a fact? I was just pointing out the effect on baseball...I know a lot are turning to basketball and football, but it is a major reason why the black population in baseball has gone down. It's a shame though. One day, there will be no blacks in baseball it will be all whites, asians, and hispanics.

The NHL is just about dead IMO. Shamefully anyway, I love ice hockey. They're predicted to have another lockout due to salery disputes in 2009. If they have another season scratched lockout you can kiss that league good bye. Also, the American sports market is not trying to make soccer replace any current "big four" sport, but are rather building it into that catagory to make it equal. Unlike foreign soccer where everyone has a strongly different value and marketing/income the MLS does not.

Yea, hockey's fast becoming a fringe sport in the US. The Northern cities still have a strong following, but its dead anywhere else and, unfortunately, most of the NHL teams are in the American South for some stupid reason. Seriously, Gary Bettman is the most incompetent commissioner of all-time.

It'll never die though, because it'll never stop getting pushed in Canada. Basketball and soccer are among the fastest growing sports here and are the most popular among the youth, but they don't get sh*t when it comes to media coverage in Canada. I try not to watch hockey that much these days, but I can still tell you major news about the Leafs and info about most of the major prospects coming up from the junior leagues.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Mamba:</div><div class="quote_post">A lot of urban youth are criminals, is that not a fact? Yea, but crime among urban youth has always been a constant and it doesn't explain such a change. The reason for this major trend is because baseball is no longer relevant for kids living in the city. They don't relate to it anymore and don't play it growing up as much.

Out here in Southern Cal, the soccer hype is pretty dead. Hell, there's still hype from the Ducks winning everything compared to the poor hype of Beckham. Although, the Ducks hype is dying, quick.

America is about three sports and in my eyes, will be for a long long time: Baseball, Basketball, and Football.

Popularity wise, I think it'd be something like Football > Basketball > Baseball.

Nope. America still loves baseball more than basketball. Everytime they have the polls on ESPN, the NFL gets like 56%, MLB gets 23%, NBA gets 9%, NHL gets 9%, then the rest is other.

I was in Toronto last week and it would have been cool to attend one of the U-20 World Cup games being held there.

I was on the subway with my cousin and at almost every station after the match, there was a gigantic rush of people (lots of kids) with jerseys and face paintings. Reminded me of last year, when all you'd see on the (downtown) streets was random honkings and cars with flags on them.

[IMG] Maybe a lot of Canadian readers decided to vote in that poll as well? Otherwise, that's kind of a wierd statistic, I thought hockey was much less liked in the States than basketball.

Yea, I know what you're talking about. There's a whole subculture of ultras in Europe that just tarnishes a great sport, IMO. M2One can tell you a lot more about those idiots.

I wouldn't hold any information highly that you get from ESPN.

Yeah, I did reports on them for a magazine too a while back when those big riots started in Ireland. As much as I love the sport, those pricks are giving it a really bad name. It is disgusting to think a while back that over a hand goal by the opposing team (Palermo) the Catania fans go out and start fires and kill a police officier for no apparent reason. There's so much more that never hits the news, such as the racism. Anyone who thinks racism is bad in the US, you have to get out more. Europe has so much crap that goes unnoticed.

I remember reading something with Thierry Henry about the astonishing amount of racism black soccer players face in opposing cities in the EPL, and I'm assuming, in other leagues as well.

Lol, no kidding. I think Mamba has the order right with football > basketball > baseball. That's not how I'd rank them personally though. My list would go something like basketball > hockey and soccer > football >>>>> baseball.

You couldn't pay me to sit through a baseball game.

There's all this talk about U-20. My friend was training with the U-18 this summer. Are they any good too? He plays for Santa Clara as a rising sophomore. We used to go on bud-runs together every Friday. Good times...

Yea man. European racism can get downright disgusting. An uncle of mine writes for a magazine called Searchlight and the stories he comes back with are just unbelievable at times.
