I love finding great songs that I've never heard before though. Sometimes I feel like I've heard all the good ones, which is pretty closed minded, but still... it makes hearing good songs you've never heard before even that much better. BTW, does anyone remember that Jordan commercial that used "Umi Says" by Mos Def? That was great use of music in a commercial if I've ever seen it. I'll look for it on youtube. EDIT: Found a two actually. One's like a music video for Mos Def with clips of guys like Kobe, Finley, and EJ playing pickup, and one's a 30 second clip with Jordan walking into some guys playing pickup in a gym - <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9tltSMDR8B8&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9tltSMDR8B8&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div> <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/3nhRjV_60R4&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3nhRjV_60R4&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>

So I'm really looking forward to Rothbury now. 311 + Snoop Dogg + Modest Mouse + a lot of jam bands + 5 days in the woods of rural western Michigan with good friends from Tulane I haven't seen all summer = the highlight of my break... This roadtrip I just got back from really solidified the fact for me that Lil Wayne is simply just as huge as he is in New Orleans and only in New Orleans. I really thought the guy was considered the best rapper alive worldwide, or was at least the most listened to rapper. Down in Nawlins, we know all his songs, even his 'unreleased' tracks. So I'm on this road trip though, and I realize that all the Tulane friends I chill with blast his music and know every lyric to every random obscure song of his, yet none of their friends we're hangin with even know Wayne's mainstream 'hits.' I sort of figured it was just Memphis that was out of the loop when I came back for the break, but apparently NO is the only place in the nation where he's larger than life.

I'm really only basing the fact that he's a NO-only legend on the fact that none of my Memphis friends bump him and then on this roadtrip, none of the non-Tulane people I hung out with in NYC-DC-ATL listened to him. But that's only a small group of people from four cities... for all I know he could still be big in every other city, or he could even be big in all those four cities as well, just not with the people I've hanged with. So I just figured out my friend who I was going to room with next year killed a family in a drunk driving accident and is probably going upstate in Missouri for a while in a vehicular homicide case. He was only 20, blew an insanely high BAC, and all of the members of the family he ran into with his truck were DOA. This guy is not going to do well in prison either. He's the kind of guy who rubs a lot of people the wrong way at first. When I first met him I thought he was a real full-of-himself asshole, but then I realized he's just a really intense person by nature and actually a nice guy once you get to know him, but in prison, I could really see him rubbing the wrong people the wrong way. It's sad as hell and has really made me think twice about drunk driving, because this guy was pretty much one of my boys (depending on how loosely you throw around that term... I'd pretty much consider him a "boy," I mean hell, I invited the kid to live with me next year). On the bright side though, we have two beds open now to fill up with anyone we want (another kid we were going to live with got kicked out a few weeks ago as well for an on-campus arrest... selling steroids). It's bittersweet for sure, but my heart goes out to him and his family. He had such a bright future to see it all thrown away like this.
