I had a job interview today (tutoring agency)- turned out to be a group interview, with 4 other candidates, each of whom was a better candidate and better dressed than I was. I'd heard it was supposed to be a really chill, quick interview, so I'm wearing a tie, but I'm also wearing sneakers and so-so pants, and everyone else is pretty damn formal. They also have their resumes printed on nice paper, in folders or whatever, along with teaching certificates. I'm last to speak, and I've had no tutoring experience, so I start getting nervous as they each talk about the plethora of experience they have, my hands start sweating, my resume (the crappy paper resume) actually gets wet. I take about 20 seconds to talk about my lack of experience, I can't meet her eye, and when I do, my head literally starts shaking. Then she describes the program to us, but I'm not listening, because I'm thinking about what the hell it must look like to someone else that my head was shaking. Was it noticeable? Did I seem like a crazy man? I don't know. Then I realize I'm not listening, so I try to pay attention as she finishes talking. She asks for questions, I come up with one, but apparently it was something she'd addressed while talking. It was really just a fantastic experience all around.

But even today, I wasn't nervous going in.
Best thing to do is to use that experience as a learning moment. Figure out how to remain attentive even when thrown like that. Generally, in a group interview like that, they are looking for someone's personality to stand out.

But I might still get work there- she's definitely taking on more than 1, if not all 5, and I know the woman taking over for her in a month or so when she goes out on maternity leave, so I'll get a student or two thrown to me then. I think my thank you email tomorrow will make reference to my nervousness.

The last interview I went to, I thought I knew what I was doing, but it ended up being for a job that there was no way in hell I could be doing. I was so nervous, and I was shaking a bit, and stuttering. And I knew for a fact I wouldn't be getting the job, but somehow the interviewers ended up dragging it out anyways. Assholes.
