Another 20 were injured, some critically, and authorities were interviewing the driver of the modified race car. The driver "started a burnout but he didn't look like he had much control of the car," said Dawn Harris of Selmer, who was standing just a few yards from the car. "Then it started a tailspin and went out of control and flipped. I saw bodies and car parts fly everywhere. A bunch of people ran up and tried to flip the car over, but it had two people pinned." The tragedy marks the second time in a year that Selmer, a small town 80 miles east of Memphis, has found itself in the national spotlight. The city of some 4,500 is also where Mary Winkler killed her preacher husband, Matthew Winkler, on March 22, 2006. On Saturday evening, Raven Griswell, 15, of Finger, Tenn., and Sean Driskill, 22, of Adamsville, Tenn., were crushed by the car and died at the scene, said Mike Browning, Tennessee Highway Patrol spokesman. Brooke Pope, 20, and Scarlett Replogle, 15, both of Selmer, died hours later at McNairy Regional Medical Center. Kimberly Barfield, 17, of Adamsville, Tenn., died overnight at Jackson General Hospital and Nichole Griswell, 19, of Selmer died overnight at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis. Three victims were still in critical condition Sunday night, two at Vanderbilt Medical Center and one at The Med in Memphis, Browning said. The driver of the modified race car, Troy Critchley of Wylie, Texas, suffered minor injuries. </div> (Link)
Yeah this was pretty big news over here since the Driver is actually Australian Was ridiculous how there were no safety barriers, they just had the people lining the street, was an accident waiting to happen.
