Man, that's too much for Kapono. Didn't we need someone athletic, that could rebound, play some defense and slash to the basket? Don't we already have enough shooters? [IMG]

The Raps will set a new record for 3 pointers attempted next season.

I really hope BC has something else up his sleeve.

Why the *(#_@ did they make this move?

Kapono's gotta be happy though. That's a decent contract for him, and something tells me it would be more fun playing for the Raps than Miami. You're going from a bunch of egos (Riley-Shaq-Wade by itself is a staggering amount of ego) and the expectations of winning to a lot less ego and a lot less expectations yet good guys to play with.

This really does not make any sense to me. Kapono isn't filling a need on our team at all. He doesn't play defense well, doesn't rebound, can't create his own shot. Gabajosa does everything Kapono does with a little bit worse 3pt% and plays defense and rebounds better.

Maybe BC has a deal on the table, perhaps a package with Calderon and Garbo for an SF. That would be the only way this makes sense to me.

Kapono cannot replace Calderon in a million years.

Wow. I'm surprised as hell by this (when am I not with Colangelo, though?). This is probably what he was talking about a couple days ago when he said he was willing to overpay for someone who would fit in our system. I need to think about this a little more before I make a judgment, but my initial reaction is basically "Why?"

    Joey Graham's a goner for sure now. Not sure what to think about this signing. Right now our depth chart looks like;

    PG: Ford/Calderon
    SG: Parker/Delfino
    SF: Garbo//Kapono/Jackson
    PF: Bosh/Humphries
    C: Bargnani/Rasho

Graham and Dixon look to be out of the picture.

Seems like an awful lot of money to pay for a one dimensional player. We'll get a better comparison once some of the other comparable free agents start to sign.

    - The guy has a stroke though

Too much money for Kapono. You guys will be very disappointed because he fed off of Wade's penetration and the doubles on Shaq.

I think BC should now package Calderon and Garbajosa in a deal for someone like Maggette.

    Toronto Trade Breakdown

    Outgoing:
    Jorge Garbajosa
    8.5 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.9 apg in 28.4 minutes
    Jose Calderon
    8.6 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 5.0 apg in 20.7 minutes

    Incoming:
    Corey Maggette
    16.9 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 2.8 apg in 30.6 minutes

Change in team outlook: -0.2 ppg, -0.7 rpg, and -4.1 apg.

The trade works for both teams. We get the athletic swingman that can play some defense, rebound and drive to the basket and LA gets the point guard they need (with Livingston's injury) and some size and shooting. It's also no secret that LA is shopping Maggette.

    Our lineup:
    Ford/Ukic?
    Parker/Delfino/Dixon
    Maggette/Kapono/Graham
    Bosh/Humps
    Bargnani/Rasho

We can also package Dixon and/or Graham for a decent backup point guard. Thoughts?

This team is getting whiter and whiter.

Good replacement for Mo Pete but is he worth the money? I guess he has something up his sleeve to make the pieces fit. Magloire anyone [IMG]

I think you guys should package them for a solid 2 guard. I think Parker would be better off as a shooter you can bring off the bench.

Eww, please no Maggette. I like the Clippers, I have no problem with the guy, but on the regular he's way too injury prone, and he's not the best IQ guy.

This is way too much money for Kapono, a set shooter who can't create his own shot and can't defend. Charlotte was going to give Matt Caroll something like $3 million/year, and he's better than Kapono as he can create for himself is younger, and though not a good defender can at least defend better.

This is probably going to make every other player so much more expensive for other teams too, very interesting. Three point shooting is one thing we really didn't need more of.

No way, Parker is a very good player. He's extremely efficient and is BY FAR the teams best defender, and actually on of the better SG defenders in the league. He definately needs to remain a starter.

i disagree, Parker is exactly what we need as a starter, our best defender, good leadership, and a consistent if not overpowering offensive game

I like this signing, but yes we do have some log jams

Anyone that watches the Raptors regularly knows that Parker is one of our most important players and we need him to start. Having him come off the bench is out of the question.

What does getting whiter have to done with anything?? I was expecting maybe to go after Desmond Mason, not Kapano. He's a terrific shooter but not really an answer to the need for a perimeter defender. Hopefully Mo Pete sticks around.

From a purely on-court standpoint, I like this signing. I know everyone's saying we have enough shooters as it is, but honestly, can you have too many shooters in Sam Mitchell's offense? Good, consistent 3-pt. shooting is absolutely essential for us and if our players had a bad shooting night last season, it really was difficult for us to come through with a victory (remember the NJ series?). With Peterson a lock to leave, I think acquiring one of the best 3 pt. shooters in the league is a way of ensuring the opposition doesn't cheat against our main gameplan (Bosh inside, PG penetration). I like Kapono on our 2nd unit, paired up with Delfino. It provides a good mix of dribble penetration and long-range shooting.

That said, we can only really talk about Kapono on the offensive side of the ball. Everyone's already said this, but that's a big commitment to make to what is essentially a one-dimensional player. What Colangelo does for the rest of the offseason, will really affect how good a move this is, IMO. I think we need to get rid of both Joey Graham and Juan Dixon now. Neither has proven to be consistent enough for us to depend on and it looks like their positions have been filled up this offseason. Might as well try to get some assets down the road that will lighten the cap load a little bit too (maybe some 2nd rounders or something). And then, we need to spend whatever money we have left on another big man. With Graham likely to lose more minutes (or even be traded) our rebounding is an even bigger concern. We need someone who can spell Rasho/Bosh that is a strong rebounder/defender and doesn't need the ball to be effective.
