Morey said recently that he wants to resign both Hayes & Mutumbo. In the style that Adelman wants to play, I don't see either bein much of a contributor. Our objection this offseason is too get bigger, faster, and more athletic. The problem with Mutumbo isn't size, but the fact that he's slower than Yao. Plus he has problems catching the ball on the move. Chuck Hayes is a solid rebounder, but allows other teams to smother Yao by leaving him. I like Brooks. But we're really gambling by not taking a PF/C in the draft. Now we have to reshape our whole roster just to get another bigman. I'm not saying we need an allstar PF. But maybe a tweener who can play both positions of PF & Center. Somebody who can pretty much defend, rebound, and FINISH strong at the basket. If we resign Chuck and Mutumbo, what direction will we really be going in? NOTE:Joe Smith wouldn't be a bad pick up
Joe Smith would be nice, he's not a big rebounder, but he's decent, he's also a fairly good defender and can guard quicker PF's quite well and he has a nice mid-range jumpshot.
Hayes is a rebounder/defender/hustle player. Hayes is also very cheap. I don't see a problem. Your analysis on Yao being smothered comes from the assumption that we will use the same offensive set as JVG. Who knows, Hayes might actually benefit us offensively. He is a very good cutter and has a very quick release at the basket. Despite what you say about him, he has a knack for finishing at the basket (more reliable than head and alston finishing). If they do smother Yao in the high post, guess who that leaves open for a backdoor pass.
Exactly. If Adelman really plays Yao on the high post like he plans to, defending teams most likely won't double on Yao that high up. If they do, then we'll live off backdoor cuts. I don't see anything wrong with re-signing Chuck Hayes. He shouldn't start under Adelman but he would be great to come off the bench as a backup. Mutombo won't need to play big minutes anyway so his lack of pace shouldn't be a problem.

We can find another player with size that can do everything Hayes does from the D-League, prolly for cheaper.
We should resign Chuck, and at the same time try to sign or trade for a PF with a more versatile offensive game that matches Adelman's system better. And I think its time for Mutombo to retire.
if we can get both for cheap I say bring them back......Deke still has game left in him (should've received more minutes against the jazz, because he did good while he was in there) and Hayes brings a scrappy attitude to this soft team.
