<div class="quote_poster">Brian Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">This is weird, I haven't seen this rumor on any other websites</div> It's just a rumor made up by a local sports news beat writer. No way Cuban trades Howard for KG. http://www.realcities.com/mld/dfw/sports/c...an/17462905.htm <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> Cost of KG may be too high, even for Cuban By JEFF CAPLAN Star-Telegram staff writer Josh Howard, Devin Harris, DeSagana Diop and Greg Buckner. That's one trade combination that could land Minnesota's Kevin Garnett in Dallas under the NBA's trade rules. To pluck Garnett, the Mavs would have to ship Minnesota contracts that match within 25 percent of Garnett's $22 million salary -- or $16.5 million. The longer Garnett sits on the trading block, the more time bloggers and overeager Internet sites have to theorize that deep-pocket Mavs owner Mark Cuban will swoop in and make national headlines by pairing 7-foot MVP Dirk Nowitzki and the 6-11 Garnett, 31 years old and entering his 13th season. Of course, if Cuban commanded his front office to get a deal done, it would be a U-turn on the team's off-season road map to tweak and not trade key pieces such as Howard. The Mavs deftly drafted the ever-improving swingman late in the first round in 2003 and have developed him into an All-Star. (And no, Howard's $9 million salary can't be swapped for Jason Terry's $8.3 million in the trade equation because no one wants the weight of Terry's remaining five years and $50 million.) Harris, picked No. 5 overall in 2004 by Washington and then traded to the Mavs, apparently is set to become coach Avery Johnson's primary point guard. Donnie Nelson, the Mavs' president of basketball operations, is on record as saying Harris will be around here a long, long time. And just for perspective, an NBA source said the Mavs have had no contact with the T'wolves since draft night, and even that contact was more about draft position than KG. But whatever, back to the fantasy of KG as a Mavs man. First off, Timberwolves basketball boss Kevin McHale would have to want the Mavs' offer. The Lakers offered potential center-of-the-future Andrew Bynum ($2.17 million) and veteran power forward Lamar Odom ($13.5 million), plus one or two other low-salary types. The T'wolves didn't bite. So how would one potential perennial All-Star (Howard), an unproven point guard (Harris, $3.99 million), a center who averages two points (Diop, $2.16 million) and a reserve utility guard (Buckner, $3.5 million) be received? McHale, if nothing else, is unpredictable, so say he jumps on it. OK, where then does that leave the Mavs? For starters, they'd have $38.4 million next season locked into two power forwards who both play more of a perimeter game than a back-to-the-basket game. Because Garnett can opt out after next season, figure the Mavs probably would insist that he sign an extension. So how's this starting lineup sound for at least the next few seasons: Dirk, KG, Erick Dampier, second-year shooting guard Maurice Ager and Jason Terry running the point? Sixth man Jerry Stackhouse agreed to a new deal Thursday, and Devean George remains a possibility to return. Add rookie Nick Fazekas, plus a couple of free agents such as aging center P.J. Brown and James Posey or Matt Barnes (the deal for KG eliminates acquiring Gerald Wallace, who would require a sign-and-trade), and are the Mavs really better positioned to beat the Suns and Spurs -- or Warriors? The KG reality is the Mavs were more concerned with keeping him out of Phoenix than grabbing him themselves. Still, never say never with Cuban in charge. And the longer the T'wolves wait to pull the trigger, the higher the odds that Cuban might not be able to help himself. But, give up on Howard and Harris now? Don't bet on it. </div>
I honestly think that deal would put the Mavs a step back. Sure, they'd have a great duo of KG/Dirk, but they lose way too much in that deal. Harris and Howard are HUGE parts to the future of that organiziation, not to mention that Buckner and Diop are Avery Johnson kind of players. They're two of the best defensive players on the entire team, and while they don't necessarily give a lot on offense, they do their best work, again, on defense. Cuban would be a nutcase if he did this deal. Minnesota, for lack of a better word, would be raping them in this.
Man, I don't think they should do anything major unless somehow Garnett falls into our laps. Who knows. The Nuggets got Iverson for Miller, Smith and two first rounders (not even high first rounders at that). And look what the Heat traded for Shaq; both teams went in completely different directions. Still, I don't think the Mavs should do it unless the deal is worth it. Trading two core players doesn't feel like the right thing right now.
With this deal i dont think we get worse. We lose depth but there are so many viable free agents out there. Gerald Wallace, Desmond Mason, Maggette is available according to the Clips. Josh Howards points will be picked up by KG, Diop's good defense will be picked up by KG's great defense. But we will miss the way Devin pushes the ball. and he is IMO the best defender at the point position. But a KG and Dirk combo sounds delightful. I'll give up George before Buck though.
<div class="quote_poster">Brian Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">I really don't see how this deal is better than Lamar Odom, Andrew Bynum, and Kwame Brown, but whatever floats McHale's boat I guess. To be completey honest with you, I'd much rather have Garnett playing for Phoenix than Dallas. But whatever. If this trade goes through, they're instant favorites to win the title this year. I'm still waiting on move for the Lakers...</div> If KG goes to LA the wolves would have a core of: Foye, Odom, Bynum, Kwame, Brewer, Davis IMO thats a better and MORE WELL - ROUNDED core than Harris, Howard, Foye, Buckner, Davis
Everyone's talking about this from the Mavs POV, which makes sense since this the Mavs forum, however, I don't see why the Wolves would make this deal. Adding Harris and Howard just further creates a mess, and defeats the purpose of the Mavs drafting Brewer, who many compare to Howard and Foye.
I haven't seen this on Hoopshype or any other site with basketball news, so I don't know how done of a deal this is. But I agree with P.A.P on this one. T'Wolves can get a much better deal than what was offered. Even though I would hate the move (from a Knick fan persepctive), Chicago has better pieces to offer as do many other teams including teams in the Western Conference like Golden State. From a Mavs perespective this would be a steal. Dallas would have the best and most versatile frontcourt in the league, maybe in league history. Both are around 7'0" can post up, take it inside/outside and rebound. If Dallas pulls this move off, then they will be the unquestionable favorites to take it all, though that isn't saying much since they were last year, too.
<div class="quote_poster">dallasdude Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">I'll be damned if the deal goes through. But there's no talk of such a deal on local radios out here. Mavs still have enough depth after this trade. If we could sign Gerald Wallace, Terry/Stackhouse/Gerald Wallace/Dirk/KG should help compete with the Spurs and the Suns for sure.</div> haha gerald wallace isnt coming to dallas for the MLE sorry to say but those rumors are ridiculous. He is talented enough and had a good enough season to sign for more money. If you trade that young talent for KG, then you will have nothing to trade charlotte for a S&T for wallace. Personally Josh Howard and Devin Harris were a big part of your team. If you loose that then you loose. KG and Dirk can not exist side by side WITH terry and stakchouse. Not enough shots to go around. This will set the mavericks back. youll make the playoffs but wont win...
The players mentioned for this trade is bullspit. Dallas every year crows about landing KG or some big name player while giving up nothing for it and the reason they haven't ever been able to do it is cause... IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO GIVE UP THAT MUCH LESS TALENT. Minny is retarded, I know. But not that retarded. And Dallas needs to get the head out of the arse and realize this isn't MLB and you are not the Yankee's.
<div class="quote_poster">Montaman Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Dallas could trade Nowitzki for Garnett and contend. If they lose Howard, though, it's a no go.</div> Why, KG and Dirk, with Dirk shooting, and KG playing inside, it looks good. However, I do agree with you on losing Howard, he is so good, and is very consistent even when Dirk isn't
The problem with trading Harris and Howard for KG is that you're then rolling with a starting lineup that, in aiddition to having no true distributor, doesn't have the sorts of player who can make their own shots. Nowitzki, for all his shooting prowess, can't consistantly put the ball on the floor. Truthfully, I think Dirk's life is going to get a lot harder next year if they don't get a real point guard on that team.
Plus if we get rid of our whole depth, imagine if Dirk or possibly KG gets hurt! Then what are we supposed to do???

Imagine havin your headcoach on the court with you. haha thatd be awesome.</div> Lol He'd never get off, and he'd bench you while making a lay-up or something lol. I think the Mavs need to sign Rodman and Pippen, to some vet contracts, then they'll win something.
Yeah I thought we were gonna snag Pippen before playoffs started. But oh well. I'd love to see Rodman on the Mavs again though. thatd be so frickin awesome, I love Rodman. haha But anywaysm back on the whole KG issue, lol, we had te best record in the league with our squad and had a bad playoff series. Lets just leave it, maybe add a few good role players that good make an impact. But lets not deplete our shole lineup for KG. It just seems that the only reason these talks are being brought up is because Mark Cuban doesn't want KG going to the Suns. Just think smart Cuban and e careful what you do.
