Fisher is not getting the full MLE. Mitch said he wasn't going to give Steve Blake the full MLE, so why turn around and give it to Fisher? Also, the title is misleading.
<div class="quote_poster">Mamba Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Not excited about this, especially if he gets the MLE.</div> You have to be excited. This is the biggest move by management in ages. Among the PG's that are out there, I'd definetly rank Fisher as one of the highest. Still though, we need a big man!
The title is misleading. He's only in the discussion process of signing. I only just realised that Brian said the title was misleading as well. I doubt he comes back but if he does, I hope it's at a low cost. I'm pretty happy with Crittentons progress but I don't know if he can play against real NBA teams.
Derek Fisher will be 33 years old at the start of next season. Last year, he shot a thoroughly below average .382 percent from the field, including .308 on three point shots. That's savvy, veteran three point marksman Derek Fisher. He's burnt toast, and he's burnt toast that's gonna keep you guys from tasting the eggs benedict (Crittenton).
Let's see. We don't want to offer Blake the MLE, yet we're fine with offering Fisher it...I mean, that's what he wanted, any ways. He'll give us at most, what? 10 PPG and 4 APG with lousy defense? Hm, I think I'd prefer Smush Parker. I know I've been very critical of the Lakers and critical of fans not wanting to upgrade, but Derek Fisher is no upgrade. This isn't the Derek Fisher of old, this is the old Derek Fisher. If anything, this is another step backwards. L.A. is a harsh town with harsh critics, when Fisher starts missing games due to his daughter's health, the fans and the media will nail him.
He should be coming back as a coach and not a player. Except for the occasional heroic shot-.4- he couldn't guard paint and got lit up like a christmas tree by every guard he faced and that was four years ago. Hopefully he can help our two young guards in training camp and then retire.
Terms of the deal haven't been discussed. But Fisher will more likely be the starting PG for the Lakers this fall.
Fisher/Crittenton/Farmar Kobe/Evans/Vujacic Walton/Vlad/Evans Odom/Turiaf/Cook Bynum/Kwame Ugh, that lineup would look so much better with Steve Francis at the point. He's expressed a lot of interest in the Lakers, too.
Of course Steve Francis has expressed interest. Los Angeles is one of the U.S.' most big time cities, and the Lakers a big time franchise. But apparently Mitch Kupchak is jonesing for some D-Fish... I hope he wasn't thinking this was one of the moves to keep Kobe around, was he? Becuase that would be... quite sad.
Maybe because Fisher knows the triangle in his sleep. Or maybe it'll take Francis two years to learn that damn offense.
You guys do realize that Smush Parker had a better statistical season last year than Derek Fisher? Smush also has a higher career field goal percentage, is cheaper, and several years younger. I don't bring this up as a defense of Smush Parker per se, more as evidence of the tenuous situation you're in when Derek Fisher is your starting point.
I went ahead and edited the title. I will not be surprised if the Lakers end up signing him to the full MLE. Unless Bynum can be a dominant offensive presence in the post, Fisher is useless to us on offense. Fisher cannot create his own shot, he's terrible at finishing layups, and isn't good at setting up teammates. Fisher's at his best when he can slide to the baseline and spot up for three pointers when team's double off him to defend the big man inside. Fisher is a one trick pony on offense, and hasn't been the defensive stopper he used to be after he had foot surgery. Leadership wise, it's going to be great having Fish around. He was the locker room general during the Shaq/Kobe era, and he'll be a positive influence for everyone.

Smush Parker is an addition by subtraction, pure and simple. The guy was a lockeroom cancer who whines and complains. His ego is as big as Kobe's even though he hasn't done crap in the league. Although I'm not big on us resiging Fisher, Fisher, or pretty much anyone for that matter, will be an upgrade over Smush Parker. Smush is just plain lazy. He doesn't play with any effort on the court. He doesn't even try to play any type of defense, yet he tries to be Superman on the court jacking up stupid shots. Anyways, enough of the Smush rant. I liked Derek Fisher in the championship runs. He has certainly brought us Laker fans tons of great memories, like Mamba said, this is an old Derek Fisher, not the Derek Fisher we Laker fans have remembered. This is a washed down Derek Fisher. I would LOVE to bring him in as a backup point guard, but it seems to me we are intent on signing him as a starter. There are better options out there plain and simple. Steve Blake, Charlie Bell, even Jannero Pargo are better options. If we do end up signing Fisher, this better not be the only move we make. Fisher alone doesn't make us any better of a team than we were last year. Maybe an extra 2 or 3 wins here and there, but he is by no means a savior. This better not be the lone transaction we make...

I don't understand how the management will give Derek Fisher the MLE, yet say Steve Blake isn't worth the MLE. Blake is better and more valuable than Fisher at this stage of his career.
