Yeah, it's certainly confounding. Steve Blake is a quality point guard. Earl Boykins is out there. Matt Barnes as a point forward, even, is more worth an MLE than I'd think Fisher would be at this point.
<div class="quote_poster">Laker_fan Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">The title is misleading. He's only in the discussion process of signing. I only just realised that Brian said the title was misleading as well. I doubt he comes back but if he does, I hope it's at a low cost. I'm pretty happy with Crittentons progress but I don't know if he can play against real NBA teams.</div> Stein says in the article that the Lakers are "virtual sure-thing favorites now" and goes on to say that hes not even negotiating with other teams and he'll be a Laker "barring an unexpected snag in negotiations". I called this move a while back in a different thread. I think Kupchak thinks that signing Fisher will get him some more support from the fans, who are familiar with Fisher and it'll take some of the spot light off of him and the Kobe situation since Fisher gets so much publicity in the media these days. Plus Fisher knows the system, gives them a guy who can start immediately sine Crittenton and Farmar probably won't be ready to start right off the bat and Fish will probably sign cheaper than Blake, Mo Williams, Boykins, etc.
<div class="quote_poster">Mamba Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Let's see. We don't want to offer Blake the MLE, yet we're fine with offering Fisher it...I mean, that's what he wanted, any ways. He'll give us at most, what? 10 PPG and 4 APG with lousy defense? Hm, I think I'd prefer Smush Parker. I know I've been very critical of the Lakers and critical of fans not wanting to upgrade, but Derek Fisher is no upgrade. This isn't the Derek Fisher of old, this is the old Derek Fisher. If anything, this is another step backwards. L.A. is a harsh town with harsh critics, when Fisher starts missing games due to his daughter's health, the fans and the media will nail him.</div> Be optimistic... quit hating.
Wow, 1st 2 PG's in draft then blake or francis and now fisher... what a way to address our pg problem
I thought Fisher would play more of a SG roll, then a PG roll, but either would be good for him. And good for the Lakers.
I'm down for getting Fisher but for all the MLE no way. It's good for the Lakers to get Fisher since we need a Veteran PG and he has experience.

Except for the occasional heroic shot-.4- he couldn't guard paint and got lit up like a christmas tree by every guard he faced and that was four years ago. Hopefully he can help our two young guards in training camp and then retire.</div> Is it possible Fish is returning to the Clippers and not the Lakers? If that idiot Mitch pulls this boner and Fish takes up a roster spot then he might as well bring back Kareem for the center spot and Magic for power forward, who needs Mihm or KG?

Just because he's only talking to the Lakers right now, it doesn't mean if another team swoops in with an offer, he won't accept. <div class="quote_poster">Quoting bruin007:</div><div class="quote_post">Be optimistic... quit hating.</div> He's not hating, he's being realistic. There's not point in resigning him just for nostalgia purposes. By signing him, we need to be sure it'll be an improvement on our team. However, even though Fisher had a bad season last year, it may mean that he can only be successful in the triangle offense he ran under Phil Jackson, so his poor performances with other teams may not necessarily indicate how much success he will have under our different offense.
The Lakers need to sign more players who play above the rim. The only athletes on the roster are Kobe and Mo Evans. Everyone else is finess and prefer to shoot floaters instead of raising up and mashing on defenders. Fisher is not deserving of the entire MLE. If he wants to sign for the vet minimum I wouldn't be opposed to it, but the Lakers have to finally get it right with their MLE this year. I'd much rather spend it on someone like James Posey, Desmond Mason or some other veteran athletic forward.
As much as I love fish, I prefer Stevie Franchise at point.. Fish had his moments for LA, but he will not improve the team on court.

Fisher is better than Francis at point guard.
fisher sucks now. if u guys are happy about this, the lakers have a long way to go. francis would be a better option too since the lakers need some penetrators and athleticism. on a team like the lakers, he can get his shots.

Done deal according to this report, 3 years/16 million (the entire MLE). <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Lakers could use some of the old glory these days, and it's coming in the form of Derek Fisher. The Lakers and Fisher were finalizing an agreement Tuesday night on a three-year contract worth about $16 million. Fisher, who turned 33 Monday, will get most of the Lakers' mid-level salary-cap exception to give the team a steady hand at lead guard while youngsters Jordan Farmar and Javaris Crittenton learn their trade. Fisher became a free agent July 2 in a rare development when he was released from his Utah Jazz contract ? giving up the remaining three years and $20.6 million ? because he wanted to relocate to a city where 1-year-old daughter Tatum could get optimal care for her rare form of eye cancer. Los Angeles can provide that, and Fisher can provide the Lakers with triangle-offense experience and a shoulder on which good friend Kobe Bryant can lean. Fisher changed agents over the weekend to be represented by Rob Pelinka, Bryant's agent.</div> Source
Gayness. Whatever, another step backwards. Mitch probably has a big smile on his face thinking he appeased Kobe and many fans by bringing in a veteran.
Great now what the Lakers need is a good Center or Power Forward. Then we'll be in good shape. Maybe the Lakers are going to trade some of the PG's away so they can get a good player in return.
I'm tired of this waiting game. Indiana should just accept Bynum, Kwame and some fillers for O'neal. Fisher Kobe Radmanovic/Walton Odom O'neal That lineup is good for a 4th seed in the west.
Talks between the Lakers and Indiana are dead, as of now. Giving Fish the MLE was just as bad as giving Vlade the MLE, hell, I prefer the Vlad Rad signing over this one. I wonder if Mitch called Darko's agent, Bell's agent, William's agent. I hate this signing so bad. 3 years/16 million. You're going to tell me that Steve Blake wasn't worth the full MLE but Fish is?

I think they wouldwant to at least flirt with the notion of equal value.
