The OC Register has taken the report back, supposedly the sides have just had brief negotiations. I hope that means that Steve Francis is about to be bought out..
<div class="quote_poster">Laker_fan Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Given the current medical condition of his daughter, it doesn't mean he'll definitely return. Just because he's only talking to the Lakers right now, it doesn't mean if another team swoops in with an offer, he won't accept. He's not hating, he's being realistic. There's not point in resigning him just for nostalgia purposes. By signing him, we need to be sure it'll be an improvement on our team. However, even though Fisher had a bad season last year, it may mean that he can only be successful in the triangle offense he ran under Phil Jackson, so his poor performances with other teams may not necessarily indicate how much success he will have under our different offense.</div> ???
<div class="quote_poster">Mamba Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Gayness. Whatever, another step backwards. Mitch probably has a big smile on his face thinking he appeased Kobe and many fans by bringing in a veteran.</div> seriously brah...
I really pray that he doesn't get our MLE. As much as I love Fisher, he's just not worth it. Francis just got bought out and would be a much better choice at this point. Francis is a much better scorer than Fisher, which is what we need. He can help take some of the pressure off Kobe and allow Lamar to be more of a 3rd option. If we bring over Fisher, we don't get that. The only reason I can see to bring over Fish is for his leadership and tri experience, neither of which are worth our MLE.
There is NO WAY Fisher gets the entire MLE. Mitch is not that stupid. You don't give out the entire MLE for a 33 year old backup point guard
Not Good <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Lakers could use some of the old glory these days, and it?s likely coming in the form of Derek Fisher. The Lakers and Fisher were working toward an agreement Tuesday night on a three-year contract, probably starting at about $5 million. Fisher, who turns 33 next month, is seeking most of the Lakers? mid-level salary-cap exception ($5.356 million next season) to give the Lakers a steady hand at lead guard while youngsters Jordan Farmar and Javaris Crittenton learn their trade. Fisher became a free agent July 2 in a rare development when he was released from his Jazz contract ? giving up the remaining three years and $20.6 million ? because he wanted to relocate to a city where 1-year-old daughter Tatum could get optimal care for her rare form of eye cancer. Fisher's new Lakers contract could be worth about $16 million. </div> Link So apparently Steve Blake is too expensive for the MLE, yet we toss it all, or most of it on a 33 year old, no defense, Derek Fisher? Mitch really has some explaining to do. Fisher does not deserve the full MLE plain and simple. I'm surprised we didn't even give guys like Charlie Bell or Jannero Pargo a look. If this is true, Mitch better have a KG trade to redeem himself

If the Lakers commit to Fisher, they better be committed to winning now otherwise this move makes zero sense.

It seems to me that signing Fisher will be the only move we will make this offseason. Mitch Kupchak thinks signing Fisher will calm Kobe down so he won't be a problem. That way, he won't hear Kobe complaining when big moves aren't made in the offseason
<div class="quote_poster">doobee Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Fish=upgrade over Smush!!! Welcome back .4!</div>The only reason he's an upgrade over Smush is his leadership ability. He's not the defensive player he used to be (granted he still might be better than Smush) and his jumper was terrible last year.
I have to admit though, after reading the Rashard Lewis thread I don't feel as traumatized about Derek getting 5 million. That said, what BS if this turns out to be true.

fisher will be quiting the nba for at least a while so he can be there for his sick child this will be good for the nba and teams who would play against the jazz
I feel sick to my stomach. I love D-fish but he does not solve any of our issues either on offense or defense. I'm with shape. We better have a big deal for a BIG MAN going on or this season is going to be another long one for us laker fans.
Fisher looks fluid in the triangle offense. He's too old to be playing up Warriors' style of play and isn't effective in the pick and roll with Utah. He's a guy who feeds off from the post. I'm guessing the Lakers are just playing the wait game with Indiana and they might pull the trigger on the Bynum, Odom for O'neal deal. Which would be pretty darn stupid unless Granger and some fillers come in the package.
If they did pull that trigger on the Indiana deal, then this signing would make more sense. Fisher can't create his own shot, so having Jermaine kick it out to him on the perimeter makes sense. However, if no trade goes down...we don't have a post presence to kick it out to him.
<div class="quote_poster">Brian Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Mamba, didn't you post an article stating that the Lakers rejected a Bynum/Odom for J. However, I say try to give up Bynum/Kwame/Vlad/Mihm(if he wanted to stay) for O'neal then you can have PG - Fisher SG - Francis(maybe) SF-Bryant PF-Odom C-O'neal I think it could work, and Kobe is surrounded by vets, and no one young.
