The Warriors' point guard, fresh off a trip to France for the wedding of Spurs guard Tony Parker and actress Eva Longoria, dropped by Monday night's summer league game and threw his support behind his coach's desire for a huge pay raise. Davis believes the 67-year-old Nelson deserves to have his contract renegotiated after resurrecting the Warriors last season and leading them into the playoffs for the first time in 13 years. Asked if he was worried about Nelson not returning in the fall, Davis sounded confident that he'd be playing for his favorite coach again. "I'm worried, but at the same time, I'm not," Davis said. Can you say alterior motives? Baron is seeking an extension himself. Either way, I like the chemistry of this team...
They need Nellie, he is a great coach. When the Warriors can beat the best in the west in 5, you know part of that is your coach, and Nellie, is that coach.
IMO its fair to give Nellie a raise, especially if its just re-structuring the contract so that some of the money from year 3 is moved up to year 2 since its unlikely he'll be here after next season. Hes easily a top 10 coach in the league and should be paid accordingly.
I agree with all that, I just don't know why he didn't write the original contract that way in the first place. He had the clout to do so even before taking the Warriors to the playoffs last year. This is now his second conflict with Cohan over money, and it unfortunately lends a little more credence to Mark Cuban's claims of Nelson's shenanigans. Whether Nelson deserves the money or not really isn't the point. I'm sure he'll get it, but it leaves a bad taste, you know?
