And i love it. HE is not even getting offers at the mid level. PERfect. I don't think he is worth 3 mil a year and fortunately it seems the league is making that true. Barnes Frustrated With Lack Of Offers July 12, 2007 - 1:19 pm Sacramento Bee - Heading into this offseason, the midlevel exception of $5.356 million seemed a realistic salary starting point in the eyes of many, including Matt Barnes. In a departure from his usual steady, low-key approach, Barnes left agent Bill Neff, who had beaten many a bush over the past few seasons to get Barnes into veteran training camps, to sign with agent Dan Fegan, who just happened to have fellow Warriors Stephen Jackson and Jason Richardson (since traded to Charlotte). "I was talking to a lot of people who were telling me that I needed a big-time agent to get that big money," Barnes said Wednesday evening. "That's the main reason I decided to change agents. It wasn't anything that (Neff) did or didn't do. We'll see if that was a smart decision or not. Basically, it was just me analyzing my situation." Wednesday was the first day teams could sign free agents, and Barnes said he has not received the offers he anticipated. "Right now, there's nothing happening," he said. "I was thinking the midlevel exception was realistic, but my agent has been telling me teams have questioned whether the success I had was because of (Warriors coach Don) Nelson's system and whether or not I could have the same success in another system. "It's pretty frustrating because I thought I had a good year," said Barnes, who averaged 9.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists and shot 43.8 percent from the field, including 36.6 percent from three-point range, in 23.9 minutes per game during the regular season. "It was not a great season, but it was good. And from what other players have received, I thought I'd be right there in that mix. But Golden State has not come around to what I thought they might, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens." [READ] Thank You Warriors for not being fools and throwing big money at this guy. LEt him walk. Or offer him what he made last year and prove himself worthy to stay in the NBA again. http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives...lack_of_offers/
I dunno, I certainly think he's worth more than he made last year. But MLE is a bit high. I guess I'd be OK with something in the $2M to $3.5M range, and frankly, so should Matt Barnes. Then again, it's not my money.
This team wouldn't have made the playoffs without Matt Barnes. As long as there's enough left over for Monta/Beans, then pay the man.
Last year's luxury tax threshold was 65.4 mils, and this year's luxury tax threshold is 67.8 mils. So, we can assume that next year's luxury tax threshold will be roughly 70 mils. In next year, we will have 45.7 mils + POB + Marco + other cheap players, which should be roughly 5 mils. So, we will have roughly 20 mils to spend. If we assume that average of both Biedrins and Monta's extension will be roughly 22 mils per year, we will roughly commit 17-18 mils next year. So, that leaves about 2-3 mils spending money for this season. We can increase that amount by not extending POB, trade next year's pick or dump Foyle's contract for an expiring contract. If we don't do anything, I guess we can somehow squeeze Barne's contract (providing that we can sign him cheaper than MLE) or get contracts longer than a year for Pietrus' sign and trade. But, we can't do both. Also, another possibility is that we can forget about Barnes, return of Pietrus' sign-and-trade and POB, and go for a large contract using trade exception. I guess Warriors tried to take that route when they tried to get Darko...
Alley we wouldnt have made the playoffs without pietrus either .... look at the numbers ...... pietrus had better numbers 48% form the floor vs 43 for barnes.... and pitrus a superior three point shooter.... pietrus is more athletic and a better defensive player. I am pissed he missed those free throws as well....but just as pissed at barnes for nonchalanting that final rebound. So i say pay Pietrus, before barnes ..... he was just as important, is more athletic, is just as much a moron, plays better D, rebounds better slightly, a has a way better attitude, no finger pointing, fame intimidating, arguing with refs, acting like he is entitled etc.... REsign Pietrus..... It is obvious to me, teams covet MP, doesnt seem like anyone wants BArnes at the same asking price roughly the Mid-level, BArnes should take a hike, there is a reason he bounced around the league and I am sure it is not just his play on the court but his attitude.

If we want to bring back either, that is. The way Kwan phrases it, I don't think we have much wiggle room.
I have absolutely no interest in Pietrus at the MLE. Let somebody else try and teach him how to play basketball. imho, he, foyle, cabbage (and next year's picks) are a $20mil/year package of salaries that could be used to bring in another nice player and/or big expiring contracts. For the right deal, I'd also include Harrington's 9mil. Barnes at 3mil/year sounds fine to me.
I think you guys can give him the Drew Gooden treatment. Gooden had a big number in mind and tried to find other teams to pay him that much when he found out the Cavs weren't willing to. In that situation, it was a combination of a weak free agent class and some uncertainty around the way he'd been traded so many times, and he eventually came back to the Cavs for a pretty decent price. This offseason, a lot of teams seem to be worried that Barnes' best season came in a contract year and that he might be a product of Don Nelson's system.
