Donaghy under investigation for betting on NBA games

Pretty Interesting Games. I'd like to see a breakdown on which Warrior games he reffed. [IMG]</div>

It seemed like all of them.

I'd ranted quite a bit the past years about refs being unaccountable and empowered to apply some fictional rulebook for whatever agenda.

This goes back to Stern who granted refs total immunity, fined critics, let the rules become subjective and variable.

Couldn't have said it better myself. This is going to be a touchy situation. Stern has to come down on the refs as hard as he does the players here. Not just the one, but put a policy in place for review. Let's see how it plays out.

This guy is totally guilty until proven innocent. That's my first reaction because of these phantom calls we seem to get a lot. Even in the replays on tv you can see it's not a foul or something should be a foul and it's never called consistently. At the pro level the best eyes and decision makers should be out there officiating the game and not corrupting it.

I was laughing like hell when my Dad bet on the spurs to cover in the last game of the finals. I think he got in a bet at 1.5 and then suddenly Jones hits that 3 at the buzzer to make the spurs a one point victory. Hilarious.

This is starting to look real ugly and gives credence to guys here who have been questioning the referees' calls. Generally, I thought the calls even out though some calls were so blatantly wrong or unfair.

Sure, I got pissed over some bad or cheap calls, but didn't go ballistic most games where the majority of the calls were going against the Warriors. There were plenty of those games. Now I wonder if I should've been criticizing the refs more.

The NBA and Stu Jackson's office who oversee the refs come into play. They've been staunchly defending the refs for so long and have been so secretive. They continuously tell us that they review every game and hold the referees accountable and have them file game reports. Now I wonder if they do enough? They must have be overlooking some things when Tim Donghy is rated as one of the better refs.

The NBA is the premiere major sport where fans accuse the refs of blunderous calls which determine the outcome of a game. You know blaming the refs is a religion to some fans. The only other sport I can think of where more damage could be done by a crooked referee is boxing.

Chris Sheridan of ESPN said with Donaghy, two incidents stand out. He was part of the crew that refereed the Malice in the Palace game between the Pacers and Pistons. I'm not sure how Donaghy affected that disaster.

Second, he refereed a Lakers - Kings game couple years ago where Shaq said Tim Donaghy had this game predetermined. Whoa. That game definitely should be checked.

I'm sure there will be more coming out as other games are analyzed, and there are Warriors games involved. All those games where the Warriors got the short end of the stick will come into play.

I doubt Las Vegas is going to get an NBA franchise anytime soon anymore [IMG].

<div class="quote_poster">CohanHater Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Maybe they should be looking into these guys too, or are they just incompetent.</div>

IMO 90% of the refs are just plain incompetent, but its their horrible overall officiating that allows a guy like Donaghy to be able to do this unnoticed. I really doubt that there are many corrupt officials, most of them just suck at their job. And theres always the "its the hardest job in the world" excuse but they do by far the worst job of officiating their sport than any other major sport.

I must say that even though this is a PR disaster for the NBA I'm glad it came out because now Stern is forced to really take a look at this and he'll finally change his views a bit with the refs and maybe make some changes. Prior to the Tim Duncan/Joey Crawford incident he would swiftly fine anyone who said anything negative about the refs and fans, players, coaches, owners have been calling for reforms in the officiating for quite some time. Stern himself has allowed the officiating to become so subjective and inconsistent and then he won't listen to criticism that now may have some validity to it.

I just hope this is the final straw in the whole officiating system and they fix it. I know, fans of every team in all sports complain about the officials but it just seems completely out of control in the NBA where at least half the games seem to have a slant in the officiating one way or another.

Good post BJM. My comment was more tongue-in-cheeck than anything. I don't disagree with fining people when they criticize the refs, (The last thing you want to hear is the already pouty players pouting after the games as well)but they should have more open reviews of grievances filed against the referees. Hopefully they move in that direction.

I agree with the gist of what you're saying.

Maybe I'm getting a bit extreme here, but it's not just a matter of changes in the officiating system.

This is more an indictment of the NBA, Stu Jackson and David Stern. Like you said, Stern has been swift with the fines, but imo he hasn't done enough to see whether the complaints from players, coaches and fans were justified of not.

Jackson's office does their thing with the reviews, but it routinely comes out protecting the officials and the system itself. They say the officials are reviewed and questioned, but the fines meted out to players or coaches are not rescinded. Complaints are routinely swept away.

With Stern, it was a concern about public perception of the NBA and its players. He regularly refuted the complaints coming from players, coaches and fans. The system is fair and working in his eyes.

Now, this incident has come out to shake the integrity of the game to the core. It's taken a big chunk out of David Stern's ass.

The NBA and Stern sanctimoniously protected their officiating system. What other major league sport has dished out so many big fines for criticizing the officiating? It was automatic and quelled the dissension from players, coaches and fans alike.

Maybe it's time Stern steps down and we see some reform in the NBA itself. People shouldn't automatically be levied big fines just for criticizing the referees. It hasn't been fair because of the NBA itself. We saw that with how the WC Finals between the Spurs and Suns were affected by what the NBA ruled. Two key players were suspended because they left the bench. Give me a break!

There needs to be more balance in the upper management of the NBA than importance on public perception of the NBA and its players.

What a horrible way to make the NBA appear worse than it already is. Now people will not be turned off the NBA because of the players who people see as selfish, greedy, thugs(to a degree), and without the best work-ethics. Now we have refs getting caught for betting on games. With how bad the refs are for the Warriors, I wouldn't be surprised if many of the refs are doing this thing. The next person I want to know about is Salvatore.

But yeah, right on points about David Stern being seen in a bit dimmer light with how he has let the league fine so many players, coaches, and owners for calling out refs or whatever.

I am interested in seeing how this will play out as the season approaches. This is not a good day for the NBA.

How typical is this.....the league starts to tank on the game fixing fiasco right when the warriors peak.

I know, I bet some Dallas fans are definitely wondering what's up with the #8 beating the #1 seed. But if anything, Dallas was the favored team and the only concern should have been the point margin or spread by which the Warriors were defeated.

Also, yeah, it sucks the nba's image is this tarnished when the Warriors pulled off the biggest upset in recent time. I'm not sure if the Warriors are on the up and up, but their future looks good if Brandan Wright and Marco Belinelli turn out to be ballers. Like always, Baron Davis' health will make or break this franchise. We don't have anyone else that makes guys play significantly better than they are, other than Sjax. But he's a role player, not a franchise guy, nor a star. For example, if we got Jamaal Magloire, I think Baron could turn him into an all-star again. He would just get him real hungry again with touches in the paint and he'd go after those rebounds.

Did Donaghy fix the Suns - Spurs WC Championship game?

Magruder: Did NBA referee fix Suns playoff game?
    Jack Magruder, Tribune
The best way to affect the outcome of a sporting contest is to remove one of the star players.

Meaning Game 3 of the Suns’ playoff series in San Antonio on May 12 offers damning evidence against ex-NBA referee Tim Donaghy, under investigation for allegations that he bet on games he worked.

Amar? Stoudemire scored 21 points in the Suns’ 108-101 loss, but played only 21 minutes because of foul trouble, finishing with five fouls.

He was given his first two fouls 34 seconds apart in the first quarter, a theorist’s preemptive first strike, before being effectively eliminated from the game in the second half.

Stoudemire received two fouls in the first 1:25 of the third quarter and sat out the rest of the quarter. He got his fifth foul 19 seconds into the fourth quarter.

And, oh yes, the Spurs were favored by four.

Donaghy Scandal May Hurt Las Vegas Getting NBA Team

    Scandal may hurt Vegas' quest

    Chuck Johnson
    USA Today
    Jul. 22, 2007 06:30 PM
LAS VEGAS -The wisdom of putting an NBA franchise in this gambling city is a split decision among officials and fans in the wake of allegations that veteran NBA referee Tim Donaghy bet on basketball over the past two seasons, including games he officiated.

Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman has led the effort to get an NBA team and said the FBI investigation into Donaghy doesn't hurt the city's case but should help it.

"I don't want anyone's bad fortune to cause us good fortune, but I think it will cause people to look at Las Vegas in a light perhaps differently than they do, because we do in fact regulate this kind of activity," Goodman said.

Alan Feldman, senior vice president of public affairs for the MGM Mirage, said "time will tell" if there have been any irregularities in betting on NBA games.

"From the way this unfolded, it appeared no one in Nevada had any knowledge of this," Feldman said. "I have to believe that everyone involved - the FBI, the league, Nevada regulators, the sports book operators and the customers - will want to know if there's any information that will shed light on this. We'll do everything we can if it means bringing additional light."

If Donaghy and his alleged organized crime partners were laying bets, they probably did it with offshore bookmakers in the Caribbean and Canada as well as illegal, street-corner bookies in the United States, said Ken White, chief executive of Las Vegas Sports Consultants.

"They probably did a pretty good job of disguising (their bets)," said White. "I bet this money was scattered everywhere."

A crooked ref could shave points a number of different ways, said White.

If he was betting against the point spread, he would call more fouls against one team than the other. Or send one team's star player to the line frequently to shoot foul shots, while getting the other team's star in early foul trouble and limiting his playing minutes.

If a crooked ref were betting the "over" number on the "over/under" betting line, he'd call excessive fouls and try to generate the maximum amount of points. If he was betting the "under" number, he'd swallow his whistle and let the teams play with fewer foul calls.

Contrary to Goodman's open-arms invitation to the league, Feldman said an NBA team might not be the right fit for Las Vegas' gaming industry.

"We're one of the most highly regulated industries in America and we live and die on our integrity," Feldman said. "We can do nothing to put that in jeopardy. If it turns out that the league is shown to be incapable of protecting the integrity of their game, it's not a league we need to have in Las Vegas."

At the Mandalay Bay Sports Book on Sunday, some bettors said they would think twice about betting on NBA games in wake of the allegations that Donaghy might have manipulated games and had ties to organized crime.

"The referee has more control of an NBA game than possibly any other sport," said Lem Kong, 30, an investment analyst from Orange County, Calif.
