i just heard the sonics sent the trade exception and a future 2nd rounder to phoenix for kurt thomas, and their 1st round picks for 2008 and 2010. http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/93612
Yeah this is a good trade. We can now have a good solid rotation of Collison, Wilcox, Swifty and Thomas at the 4 and 5 spot. So it looks like Petro is being shopped around with one of the PG's or Wilkins (big surprise huh?). On a side note. We finally won a summer league game. Sene and Petro dominated (never thought I'd use that word in the same sentence as Sene or Petro). I think they both combined for something like 35 pts, 20 boards, and 5 blocks. Durant didn't play, and the ball moved around a lot more. 23 assists as a team.
This is an unbelievable trade for us. Sam Presti is now living up to our expectations. We have two future first round picks along with a very skilled and tough interior player who can play the power forward and center position. This makes Johan Petro very expendable and I am hoping that he can continue to have games like he did yesterday in the Rocky Mountain Review Summer League to increase his trade value. Excellent move. I was only expecting to get an overpaid veteran guard with this exception. Never in a million years did I expect to get a serviceable big man along with two first round picks. Thank you Rashard Lewis for allowing us to get something in return for your departure. And I am quickly becoming a big Sam Presti fan with this move. Any move that makes you better in the short term and the long term is an excellent move. Kurt Thomas is only under contract for a year--so it gives us some flexibility to make more moves in the event that he doesn't want to resign. Not that we will be able to attract free agents in Seattle but if the team moves they may be able to do it in another city. I just love seeing competent moves. Why Phoenix threw in two first round picks to make this deal go down is beyond me? If they really weren't interested in acquiring players through the draft they should have continued to do what they have done for the past couple of years--either trade the pick or sell the pick. Not give them away. We absolutely robbed the Suns in this deal. I would never have guessed that Steve Kerr would have pulled the trigger on this move. Saving money is one thing but giving away assets is another.
Steve Kerr definitely blew it on that move. I think he was feeling the pressure to cut salary from the Suns' owner, Robert Sarver, a bit too much and overreacted. As good as their core is already, they still needed some added firepower (especially in the frontcourt). Losing Kurt Thomas might hurt more than he thinks, because he was the only Suns player who could even play decent defense on Duncan in the playoffs. I've liked Presti's approach and gameplan since he stepped into Seattle, but this is really his first clear-cut great move.
somebody do a mock depth chart for me. I love this move but i am totally confused as to who is on our roster and who isn't. (not as much time on my hands these days) Thanks in advance.
real quick i think we have a 14 man roster right now Rid, Watson, West, Szlksjdfldfjsd, Durant, Green, Gelebale, Wilkins, Collison, Wilcox, Thomas, Swift, Petro and Sene. plenty of players at every position except for a starting shooting guard imo anyway
Ridnour/Watson Durant/West/Gelebale Green/Sczcerbiak/Wilkins Wilcox/Collison/Thomas Swift/Petro/Sene 14 players are currently under contract. I'm assuming that we are going to actively shop either Petro or Sene (preferably Petro) in order to bring in some help in the backcourt. I am very surprised that Wilks has not signed with the Sonics or any other team yet. He proved himself more than capable of receiving a guaranteed contract the last month of last season. If we were to deal Ridnour or Watson I would have no problem with Wilks being our full time back up point guard. That kid is a winner. Slowly but surely we are becoming much better defensively. If Sene is able to log effective minutes as a back up center and become the shot blocker that everyone hopes that he will become I imagine that we can have one of the best defensive turnarounds in the history of the league. We gave up 102 points a game last season. If we are able to get that number down to 94 points a game that would be an incredible accomplishment. The problem is that we lost so much firepower that even if we did improve so signficantly on the defensive end we wouldn't be able to score enough to significantly improve our record. Great teams win with defense so I am excited that we are making changes to improve in that area.
Unbelievable trade. I did a double take that we gave up 2 firsts for Thomas and some 2nd rounders. Never been a big fan of Thomas but that's probably because he was always on the other team. I thought he played Duncan pretty tough in the playoffs and certainly better than any of our current bigs could do.
Steve Kerr will be rubbing his backside after being inserted numerous times by Presti on this deal. He must be under enormous pressure from Sarver to cut salary and has made a panic move. When I initially saw the deal I assumed KT had at least another two years left on his deal (I was still ok with it in this case) but if he is expiring it's even better. How we managed to get two first rounders involved amazes me, and KT is still a more than capable big man in the west, and a very good interior defender. I cannot think of a downside to this trade - at least it's given us some genuine compensation for Lewis and more than Orlando could have really offered.
I haven't posted here in over a year and a half, but I still vaguely remember most of the people who posted in here. Anyway, I think it was a great move on Presti's part. Kurt Thomas is solid defensively but it's his mid-range jumper that really makes me like him. He rarely misses a mid-range J, which is very good considering his size.
