New York Times - As F.B.I. officials, the news media and fans pore over video footage of games refereed by Tim Donaghy, looking for curious foul calls and other such behavior, several seconds of a game between the Chicago Bulls and the Golden State Warriors in February could attract attention. The Bulls-Warriors game of Feb. 9, played at Golden State and broadcast on ESPN, was tied, 112-112, with 23 seconds remaining. While a Bulls guard dribbled between midcourt and the 3-point shot line ? clearly working the clock down for an attempt at a final shot ? Warriors center Andris Biedrens stood in the lane without guarding anyone for about seven seconds, which is grounds for a defensive three-seconds violation. Donaghy, stationed behind Biedrens on the baseline, clearly stepped forward and tapped Biedrens on the waist with 16 seconds left. Biedrens, by then at the edge of the lane, then immediately moved clear of the paint, and play continued. The penalty for defensive three seconds is the assessment of a technical foul and retention of the ball. Golden State could have faced a 3- or 4-point deficit before getting the ball back. Instead, the Bulls had a shot blocked with six seconds left, and Golden State missed a half-court heave to leave the score tied as regulation time ran out. The Warriors won in overtime, 123-121. I dont know about that. Usually refs like to swallow their whistles with time running out. When I was a ref we were instructed to warn players at times before we blew a whistle. For instance if play was getting rough in the paint we could say something like stop grabbing number 4! If they did it again then blow the whistle. That usually happens during the game though, not at the end...

Some people are so lame! So, Tim knew that the shot would be blocked, and that the game would go to OT where the W's would win it? Come on! What if the Bulls had launched a lucky 3 and made it, winning the game for the Bulls? Would the mob boss put some concrete shoes on Tim and sink him to the bottom of the Bay?

Really though, this whole situation is totally disturbing.</div> I just read the Stern press conference and he believes it was an "isolated incident" and won't go beyond the one "referee who resigned." In other words, it's not MY league's fault. It's Tim Donaghy. That doesn't give me confidence in the league with the poor officiating in the NBA . Stern said they've been "evaluating the officiating of every game, but conceded it had been focused more on the quality of referees' performances than searching for possible wrongdoing." Jeez the quality of the referees' performance has been questionable at best! So, I don't expect them to find possible wrongdoing and blow the whistle on themselves. Oh well, there is going to be much more referee bashing next season regardless of what he said, but at least Stern can't say bring me the proof anymore. I can just imagine Joey Crawford blowing a whistle and Rasheed Wallace saying "Aw, c'mon baldy! I know you got money in this game, fool!" This needs to be cleaned up quick. If anyone can do it, though, it's Stern, the best commish in all of sports, IMO.
