This season will be Bynum's third season in the league. He has been working under Kareem Abul Jabar, who has been teaching Bynum the skyhook. I'm just wondering if anyone knows how it's progressing? I was disappointed last season because Bynum never used it in games. I'm just wondering if we'll see it this season, or at least a couple of times in the preseason?

he's really developed a solid jump hook, and i'm surprised with his shooting touch around the rim ... but i really doubt we will ever see him with the sky hook ... unfortunately, that is an art that died when kareem retired.
I think I only saw it twice this whole season. Such a waste not using the PRIMARY weapon being taught to you.
I saw on a Kareem interview with Chris Meyers that Kareem said Bynum doesn't use it because it is not flashy or "cool" enough. He says Bynum would rather dunk that to do that...

That reminds me of when Shaq turned down free throw shooting help from Rick Barry because he'd rather miss shooting overhand than make it shooting underhand. I don't respect guys who have that mindset and if that's true about Bynum than I don't know why the Lakers are so damn high on him. If he's going to become a franchise player for them, he needs to not worry about what looks cool and flashy and just try to get the ball into the basket so he can help his team win games. I wouldn't want my franchise player not using an effective scoring technique just because it looks "uncool". That's selfish and stupid. If he's so concerned with his reputation and **** then he can go suit up for an And 1 team.
I'm glad didn't see Shaq shoot under hand. A grown ass man shouldn't be doing that. I'd rather miss, too.

If I'm ever an NBA GM and you somehow enter the Draft, you're not getting picked by me.

So many games can be held in the balance of making or missing a free throw(or having a skyhook available), that it wouldn't matter what you looked like doing it.
The Skyhook is the single easiest shot in the game once it is mastered. Otherwise it is hit or miss. I think Kareem's stats(career points leader), years (20 years in the L) really show how easy the skyhook is. Just look at old footage of Kareem/Lew with the Bucks and that infamous skyhook to win the game. EVERYONE knew what he was going to do... yet no one could do anything about it. Heck, even Wilt could not block it. It truly is a lost art.
One of The most fundamental rule in basketball - As long as it goes in, shoot it however or whenever you like (For all the Filipinoes out there, "Basta Pasok, ok na")
I tried to do that sky hook, man it is so hard, because I'm not that tall. But man I was getting that shot over 6'3 guys and im 5'10. It crazy so hard to block.
<div class="quote_poster">Bahir Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">I think I recall Bynum saying that he wouldn't use the sky hook until he had mastered it.</div> That's what I remember hearing too. I remember someone on this forum, I think it was shape, said that Bynum wouldn't use the skyhook until he fully mastered it, because he didn't want to embarrass himself. I doubt Bynum wouldn't use it because it's "uncool," that's just ridiculous. I'm just interested on his progress, (if he is indeed trying to learn it) because if we don't trade Bynum this offseason, I really want to see him use the skyhook in real games.
If Bynum grows a fro and wears some of those bug eye goggles Kareem wore, he'll look cooler pulling off the skyhook.
Look at how Shawn Marion shoots. God that's ugly. A lot of people have ugly shots, but they make them. Anyways, hopefully Bynum can use the sky hook to just make his opponents look stupid. That's a stupid excuse to not use it because he rather dunk.

I think when he shots, it hurts me to watch. How does the ball go so far?
