    Jeff Goodman

The on-again, off-again deal with the Boston Celtics acquiring Kevin Garnett apparently is back on.

According to sources, the current deal on the table has the 6-foot-11 Garnett heading to Boston and the Celtics dealing away Al Jefferson, Theo Ratliff's hefty expiring contract and Rajon Rondo. There may also be other players and draft picks involved.

It's not quite done, but three industry sources ? including one close to the Celtics ? told FOXSports.com that it's extremely close and could become official within the next 48 hours.

"It's basically done," one source said. "If it does happen, this will make the Celtics relevant again."

Celtics boss Danny Ainge attempted to trade for the Minnesota Timberwolves star forward prior to the NBA Draft, but the 31-year-old perennial All-Star had no interest in heading to Boston.

However, things may have changed now that Ainge and the Celtics pulled off the draft day deal with Seattle for Ray Allen.

There have been numerous discussions during the last week between Ainge and Wolves vice president Kevin McHale, who are good friends dating back to their days playing together on the Celtics.

Garnett has the option to get out of his contract ? which pays $22 million next season ? after the 2008 campaign and become a free agent. He averaged 22.4 points and 12.8 rebounds per game last season ? his 12th in the NBA.

Garnett is a 10-time NBA All-Star and was the league's MVP in 2004. He is also one of the better defensive players in the NBA.

The deal would give Ainge a team that could compete with anyone in the Eastern Conference with the trio of Paul Pierce, Garnett and Allen. The Celtics would also have nearly $60 million in salaries between the three players for next season alone.

The Wolves would get one of the league's top young players in the 22-year-old Jefferson, who averaged 16 points and 11 boards in 69 games a year ago, and a second-year point guard in Rondo with plenty of potential. They would also get Ratliff's $11.7 million salary, which will come off the books after this season.</div>

The 'Wolves don't get screwed too loose on this deal. They get an up and coming Forward in Jefferson who is pretty underrated, as well as an expiring contract in Theo. The only part of the deal I don't like, is Rondo. Not to knock the guy, but they already have Foye.

This would be a great future for the 'Wolves if the deal pulls through, though. [IMG]

Yeah, there are reports saying Green is in it, some say not. Minnesota should not do the deal if Green is not in it though. Rondo, Al and a 1st Rounder isn't worth KG. Especially since that pick isn't lottery.

Newer reports suggest that it's Green involved instead of Rondo, which makes the deal even better for the Wolves.

    PG - Foye
    SG - Green
    SF - Brewer
    PF - Jefferson
    -C - ....
    6th Man: McCants/Craig Smith
= Deadly Future. But these days, plenty of teams have good young talent so they will have to mesh well together.

Maybe they could get another big for Ricky Davis.

It's a good trade if Rondo isn't involved. I mean Jefferson is a double-double guy every night and is gonna be even better in a few years, Theo Ratliff's contract is up, and Gerald Green is pretty solid.

Eh, I really don't like the idea of getting the team with the second worst record in the league's junk. I know jefferson has tons of potential and all that. But that's the only part of the deal. Plus the celtics are gonna be without a point guard to distribute the ball between Allen, Pierce, and KG. They are also gonna be without any low post presence outside of KG. I see the wolves being like the Hawks or Bobcats for 3-4 years after this trade and the Celtics maybe making a run in about 2 years.

Here's an update from the Globe:

As the trade currently stands, the Celtics would send Jefferson, Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff, and two first-round picks to the Timberwolves for Kevin Garnett

The deal is official now, Jefferson, Green, Gomes, Telfair, Ratliff, 2 first round picks. Pretty good return for Minny IMO. They got a couple of studs in Jefferson, Green, and Gomes, Telfair sucks but not bad to take a flyer on, plus future picks and a fat expiring contract. Foye, Brewer, Jefferson, Green is a very nice core for the future.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Kevin Garnett is leaving Minnesota after the Boston Celtics agreed to acquire the All-Star forward in a multiplayer trade with the Timberwolves, a Celtics official told The Associated Press on Monday.

Among the players who could be headed to Minnesota are forward Al Jefferson, guard Sebastian Telfair, swingman Gerald Green and center Theo Ratliff, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been completed. The official also said the Timberwolves would get at least one draft choice.

The teams "ran into a few things that need clarification" in the players' contracts, but the official said that would not keep the Celtics from acquiring Garnett, although there could be a change in the players ticketed for the Timberwolves.

There was a "50-50" chance that a conference call announcing the trade would be held Monday, the official said.</div>

Lame, Green better improve or else this really sucks. I am not very optimistic about him either. The celtics were trying to ship him out awhile ago. I really hope jefferson is as good as all the celtics fans think he is as well

So you guys turned down Deng, Chandler, and #2 for this?

Al Jeff is very good, Gerald and Telfair have some upside, but that's about it.

Al Jefferson was a good move, they have young guys, and Theo Ratliff expires. They're also getting a draft pick, so it isn't all bad really. It's about as decent a trade you can get for a superstar.

They weren't as willing to trade KG then.

    PG - Randy Foye/Sebastian Telfair
    SG - Rashad McCants/Gerald Green
    SF - Corey Brewer/Trenton Hassell
    PF - Al Jefferson/Craig Smith
    C - Mark Blount/Chris Richards

This team is going to be bad this year, but they have a lot of young talent. It will be interesting to see who starts at SG, McCants or Green. BTW, I'm assuming Hassell will start at first, but Brewer will take the starters job by midway point of the season.

This is daylight robbery. Kevin Mchale helping the Celtics is a bigger crime than that ref who rigged games.

Don't forget they still have Ricky Davis too.

I don't really understand why it's that bad of a deal. The Twolves aren't going to win right now so they need to get young players, cap space and draft picks and they succeeded. Al Jefferson is a 22 year old guy who avg a double double last year. He can be the franchise big man. Gerald Green still has serious potential and seems like he would fit in well as the explosive offensive wing next to Brewer's defense. Theo Ratliff is in this trade just for the cap space. Not to mention the draft picks. Boston is going to be terrible in 3-4 years, so if 1 draft pick ends up going that far, then it could turn out to be a goldmine for Minnesota.

They need a pf/center badly(depending on where they play Al), but they'll likely have a top 5-7 pick again this year and can get that in this years draft. They've got a pretty big future ahead of them.

I do see a lot of potential also. Remember, it's not like we were going to light the world on fire anyway. Starting with all this young talent could end up being a good thing because there shouldn't be a lot of issues with egos. These guys can learn to play like a team from scratch instead of pointing at such-and-such and saying "you win it and we'll watch". If they can keeps their heads on straight and learn from the beginning that it is a team sport. I wouldn't mind moving a vet for Noah.

They could trade Ricky Davis for a big man. Gators is right this trade isn't bad because more than likely you guys wouldn't have won with KG anyways. This trade though, helps you for the future.
