Boston made the right choice of trading youth for a player of Garnett's stature. This makes Boston instant contenders. yodawgsup is right. The objective is to win championships. Garnett gives them a legitimate chance now rather than pinning their hopes on a couple of young players and wish they develop (maybe) in a couple of years or so. A golden opportunity doesn't come very often. And when it finally does, you should jump on it and take it. That's what Boston did. Maybe when Mitch had the opportunity to get Kidd, he should have taken it. With Kobe and Kidd on the roster, don't you think that Garnett would have wanted to be a Laker? If you guys are thinking of the salaries, well... Boston made it work. Like the old saying goes, "if there's a will there's a way".

<div class="quote_poster">Brian Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Well, yeah. They basically traded away their entire future to win now. If the roster can win one or two championships together, I think the trade will be worth it. They do have issues with depth, but they still have the MLE and LLE to aquire players.

Anyone find it funny how much assets Minnesota aquired by trading away Garnett? They got tons of young pieces, first round picks, and a big expiring contract, while we only got Lamar Odom, Caron Butler (now Kwame Brown), one first round pick that ended up being Jordan Farmar, and a horrible contract in Brian Grant. To this day I wonder how in the world we got stuck with Grant for Shaq. We would have been better off just letting Shaq walk because of the amount of cap space we would have gotten. But of course when you have Mitch as your GM, it's not that suprising</div>

I think what sucks even more is that Miami won a title as well

    <div class="quote_poster">Mamba Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Does anybody feel like Boston overpaid?

They gave up a lot of pieces, including two very attractive young talented front court players. It just seems like a hefty price to play for an aging all-star.</div>

They sacrificed their future for the opportunity to win now. Similar to what Miami did with Shaq. Its a gamble for sure and the window of opportunity is limited. Plus they gave up a couple first rounders as well.

Although I think they overpaid, for an opportunity to see 3 all stars compete together on the same team, I think its a worthy risk.

Hopefully it pays off for them. KG is very deserving of a title shot. Much more so than some others who have rings. I wish him the best.

even though if we would get garnett, we wouldnt be able to compete in the west, with all those dominant teams!! kobe and KG just wouldnt be enough!!!
it just isnt worth to trade all those players for KG, although Boston had a better deal all along

<div class="quote_poster">Moo2K4 Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">I honestly think Boston overpaid completely. They just mortgaged off any type of a future they have to win now, and I don't know if that was the best thing to do. While Boston did get KG, I think the TWolves got the best of the deal. They got one of the best young bigs in the league in Al Jefferson, who by all means could be a 20/12 type of player THIS year. Gerald Green has the potential to be a great player as well. He's got tremendous athletic ability and is a great shooter. Aside from that, getting that huge expiring contract from Ratliff will help as well, especially after landing all that young talent. Throw all the guys in they just got with all the young talent they already had and this team looks like they have a very, very bright future. Boston on the other hand, has to win here in about 3 years, otherwise this trade by all means could be considered a massive bust for them.</div>
For a perennial all-star and perhaps the greatest power forward in the history of the NBA, it's hardly overpaying. Especially when you factor in now Boston has a legitimate chance to win a championship. Plus, discussions between Boston and Minnesota broke down on so many occasions - most recently on draft day - so you can't really blame Ainge for giving into Minnesota's wants.

I think the keyword in what you said is "could". Al Jefferson could be a 20/12 player (though that will likely be due to the fact he'll be a 1st option) and Gerald Green could be a great player down the road, but for a legitimate chance to win an NBA championship in the next 3 years, there's no question those players should be sacrificed.

All things considered, Minnesota got the best possible deal for Garnett. They significantly added to an already solid youth core.

Boston did what needed to be done, that team was going nowhere...by the time they got to "the future" Pierce would be well past his prime......win now if possible

If the Lakers ever want to contend they MUST FIRE MITCH! It doesn't take long for word to get to free agents that LA is not a place to go to win championships any more, this interview is proof. Ainge got the job done in Boston and Chris Mullin has done it for the Warriors. Mitch is not getting it done in LA and a change needs to be made immediately. Anyone but Mitch.

    <div class="quote_poster">Brok3n Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Once again, how depleted is Boston's bench now? Are their secondary's good enough?</div>

Veterans will lineup and play on the cheap to win a title with those 3 in place. Right now the depth is depleted, but Boston still has the MLE to spend, they'll be fine.

I agree with the thought of taking a chance to win now, instead of crossing your fingers for the future. The Lakers have the best player on the planet, why wouldn't you want to make a run with him?

Boston gave up a lot to acquire Garnett, but to have someone of his caliber on your team, even for a limited amount of years, you absolutely pull the trigger. The Celtics just went from being a lottery team into Championship contenders in one summer. NO draft pick or young player they gave up would have ever done that for them.

AMS_Ice is right, the Lakers should have let Bynum go and landed Jason Kidd. The Lakers would have finished with a higher seed, and probably would have advanced to the 2nd round and possibly further, depending on how the trio of Kidd-Kobe-Odom worked out.

Even if they didn't make it to the Finals, they would the entire 2007 summer to start adding more pieces and another full season together to work the chemistry in hopes of getting a title.

Instead, the Lakers are looking at being a low seeded playoff team, Kobe requested a trade, and KG is off the radar forever. They spent their entire MLE on Fisher and drafted another PG, neither come close to filling the shoes of a Jason Kidd.

Whatthef? - Mitch definitely needs to be fired along with Jim Buss.

    Juwan Horward
    Al Jefferson

Good call. I wouldn't mind going after Juwan Howard at this point. He would give us a veteran presence inside who can score still.

The TWolves lack a true PG and Farmar looks expendable. How about Farmar & Cookie for Howard?

I would love for the Lakers to aquire Juwan Howard, he would be a great mentor to the young ones, and is a great leader in the lockeroom,

I dont think the T-Wolves would want Farmar, because they have Randy Foye

Randy Foye is more of a scoring guard than distributor though. His game is similar to DWade's. I think Jordan Farmar would be a nice compliment player for them either as a starter or off the bench.

Don't they also have Marco Jaric and Sebastian Telfair available for the point position, I dont think they would want a third point guard, But if there willing to take Farmar I would do the trade

I don't think Boston overpaid given the circumstances. Sure, Minnesota got a really great deal, but Danny Ainge finally realized that in the NBA you either tank and rebuild or go all out and contend. Jerry West realized this. Mitch Kupchack, unfortunately, has not.

Boston may not win a title, but they at least have a good chance to win as anybody. What we're doing is utterly foolish. We're holding on to prayers and projects while Kobe gets us a little above .500 resulting in garbage picks.

Farmar expendable? Do you actually believe that Fisher or Crittendon can start? Fisher is too old and way too slow to guard anyone. Critt wasn't even playing the point in Summer league, Farmar was. I have got news for you, Farmar is the future of this franchise now, he will be the starter on opening day. If he is a bust then the Lakers are lottery bound, they have no other legit point guards, Sasha is already a bust.

Farmar is more of your traditional point guard, which isn't necessary in the offense the Lakers run. His size hurt him last year because the Lakers cannot defend the pick and roll. Once Farmar switches to the opposing teams bigger player it's either a score in the post, a foul on Farmar, or a big man shooting over the top of him.

I see Farmar as a change of pace guard for the team. He's a lot more effective when in an uptempo offense.

Fisher isn't too, slow to guard anyone. He handled his own in last year's playoffs, he keeps himself in shape every year and he still knows how to draw a charge and frustrate a player.

Fisher is going to be starting. He already knows the triangle and is used to it. He's here to mentor Farmar and Crit.
