Rookie forward Jeff Green will join teammate Nick Collison on the 10-man team that will practice against Team USA in preparations for Olympic qualifying later this month. Also, new Sonics coach P.J. Carlesimo will be named coach of the practice squad Thursday by USA Basketball, giving the Sonics four members who will participate. No. 2 pick Kevin Durant has already made a splash on the USA team and has a chance to make the 12-man squad. Carlesimo is preparing for his first season with the Sonics after a five-year stint as Gregg Popovich's assistant in San Antonio. Carlesimo was an assistant on the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team squad, tabbed the "Dream Team," as well as serving on the staffs of the 1990 World Championships team and 1990 Goodwill Games squad. Green, who turns 21 on Wednesday, averaged 14.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists in the Las Vegas Summer League, and he also was named to the all-Rocky Mountain Revue team, averaging 19.3 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists in three games. He is expected to serve many roles for the Sonics this season, including backing up Durant at the small forward position in addition to spelling Chris Wilcox at power forward. The practice squad will include players such as Minnesota's Al Jefferson and Portland's Channing Frye. Former UW standout Brandon Roy was expected to be invited but may not be able to attend because of a scheduling conflict, according to reports. Portland center Greg Oden is not expected to return to practice for Team USA. The USA Basketball team will begin practice on Aug. 13 and will open play against Venezuela on Aug. 22. </div> Seattle PI They've been adding a lot of players recently. I guess that's a good thing.
