The Premium is 350 and the Core is 280 now. I'll probably ask for the Core for Christmas but a question for users, is the Core system good enough to run franchise mode with different? I've heard from a lot of people that you'd need a Premium for the hard drive, but is that even necessary? Can I use a memory card just to save money?
You'll go through three systems before you get to find out anyway. They have a ~33% failure rate. Microsoft is really struggling with this machine.
In theory, you could use a memory card to save money, but I'd just go for the premium system as it is. To me, the hard drive is a must. I play a ton of games and go through a ton of save files, so I'm pretty sure that a memory card wouldn't do me justice at that point. Plus, if you intend to go online, you'd definitely need the hard drive so you can have a gamer profile and what not. As far as the systems go, they're exactly the same. I've had a core system and a premium, both the same. The only difference is what's in the box. The premium comes with the hard drive, a wireless controller and HD cables. If you get the core, it has no hard drive, a wired controller, and just regular component cable hookups. In all though, the extra $70 is worth it just to get the hard drive.
Unless you have an HDTV with HDMI capability, don't buy the 360 Elite. Last I knew, it overheats worse than the regular does. The only real draw to me, is the massive 120gig hard drive.

Microsoft just followed Sony's act. I agree with I miss MJ, the company has been losing a lot of money with the 360. The customer service is horrible too.
^^I had bomb service when mine broke. I called on a Sunday, got the shipping box and stuff the next day and received it back fixed on friday that week. I was amazed, plus it was all free.
