This is the first ever edition of Magic Debate. In this game, posters go head to head and debate Orlando Magic topics. One winner moves on from each of the three matches and one wildcard will be selected to compete with the three winners in a championship. There will also be a loser bracket so we can determine who came in what order. Without further ado, here's this match's debaters.

Only The Walrus, michiganave17, and Umair may post in this thread!

Good luck to all of you. Here is your question.

<font color=""Blue"">Question: Which offseason addition will help improve the Magic the most, both in the present and in the future: Hiring Stan Van Gundy in place of Brian Hill or signing wingman Rashard Lewis?</font>

Ive gotta go with the van gundy deal. The orlando magic will finally have a coach with a posative record of success. stan will turn the Magic into a viable force in the east over the next 3 years.

why im putting Stan vangundy over Lewis is because in the next few years Lewis and his contract will be a liability. already his hefty contract has limited the ability to sign additional young up and coming talent to the roster. Lets say that BG doesnt resign with chicago this year. next year the Magic wouldnt even be able to sign a guy of his calibur who IMO would be a great piece to add along side a Dwight Howard.

I'm going with the Reshard Lewis Deal.

Many fans were so excited when the Magic first got Lewis. But once we found out there wasn't a trade, and we were signing him for a major contract we were all disappointed. But why?

Sure we lost out on Darko Millic. But Darko was a risk, he's someone who could be a good player , not great. And a player that isnt a scorer and could average 10-15 ppg max. The Orlando Maigc made a playoff appearance, they got a new coach, and a new stadium contract. The Magic want and need to win NOW. Plain and simple.

Now with that being said, would you rather pay 10 million to resign Darko who could be a good player and average around 10ppg. Or pay double the contract to a veteran guy that will average double the points and make an immediate impact?

You take the proven veteran who has averaged 20+ppg over the past three straight seasons and made an allstar apearance. Easy choice. We may have overpaid but considering what our situation without Grant Hill, Otis Smith had to make a move. Dwight Howard is good but he needed a sidekick.

I don't think Stan Van Gundy was a bad choice as a coach, and i think he'll do a great job. I just feel Lewis was more important. There were lots of avaible coaches besides SVG as a opposed to avaible scoring free agents.

    In conclusion,
Lewis was the more important move for the present and the future. Sure Lewis is 28, but he is just now entering his prime and has millions of reasons to play well. lol And I wouldnt worry about Lewis in the future either as he gets older, because height and shooting are both things you can't lose with age and both are featured frequently in Lewis' style of game.

The Magic need a big scorer that can complimemnt Dwight and can help the team win NOW, and that's what they recieved in Lewis.

BTW- Am I supposed to post a rebuttal to michigans arguement now, later, or not at all?

In that case I'll just rebuttal his now.

If I'm reading this correctly, your saying we shouldve saved our money for a free agent next year?

Sure we could wait a season and hope Swish's long time dream comes true and we sign Gilbert Arenas. [IMG] But let's say we couldnt get Arenas? Who else are we going to go after? Most of the former allstars on the 2008 free agent list are either dedicated to their home teams or are superstar big men.

    List can be found here

Not only would it be risky on an attempted signing next year, we'd also have to go through a possible losing season this year. No Darko, No Grant Hill, just Dwight? They wouldnt go anywhere, if anything they'd go to the first round and get swept again.

And Lewis won't be a great addition next to Dwight?? Magics need to win right now, they are already a young team they can't keep on waititng. They must win now and signing Rashard was a great move even though he took too much money.

I am pretty sure if Orlando didn't sign Lewis, they would've signed someone else good. It's not like they would've saved their money and not sign anyone the entire offseason.

Obviously, the Lewis deal was more valuable to the Magics than the siging of Stan Van Gundy. Yes Stan was an outstanding coach with Heat and will be a key part in the Magic's success but I just think Lewis was a better signing. The guy is an all-star, averages 20 points a game, really could help Magics in their weaknesses.

Jameer Nelson and Dwight can't get it done alone. Jameer Nelson is an okay player. He's stil young and needs development. He jacks up low percentage shots and rarely passes the ball. The Magic need a veteran scorer to help out.

And am I the only one not getting your arguement? First you say Jameer and Dwight are the best young tag team but then you say we could use another big time scorer. And then you go on to say we needed to get Lewis? And then we coulda signed someone else in free agency? Maybe it's just me, but it sounds like you need to pick a side John Kerry.

And who else were we supposed to sign? Everyone resigned. Vince Carter,Gerald Wallace,Chauncey Billups...the list goes on. The Magic needed a big time scorer to help the team win now and Lewis was the best option.

When did I ever say they didn't need a veteran player? What I am saying is that Jameer and Dwight combo is good but they can still use another talent to put a boost on the team. Jameer and Dwight combo is one of the best young talents in the league. You are not giving them enough credit.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">And am I the only one not getting your arguement? First you say Jameer and Dwight are the best young tag team but then you say we could use another big time scorer. </div>
Okay for example, Yao and McGrady are good two man combos, but they can't do it alone every night, therefore Battier is helpful. I am just saying that Jameer and Dwight combo is good but they can use another leader to boost their team, whats so hard about that?

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">And then you go on to say we needed to get Lewis? And then we coulda signed someone else in free agency? Maybe it's just me, but it sounds like you need to pick a side John Kerry. </div>
I never said we could've signed someone else in free agency, your not getting my point. I like the Lewis deal because Orlando needed to win NOW and getting an allstar in Lewis who averaged 22 points a game last year was a big time signing.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">And who else were we supposed to sign? Everyone resigned. Vince Carter,Gerald Wallace,Chauncey Billups...the list goes on. The Magic needed a big time scorer to help the team win now and Lewis was the best option. </div>
You said that if Lewis wasn't signed by the Magic's they would've went on another losing season. And then I replied saying that "its not like they wouldn't have gotten anyone else in the offseason". They could've gotten other decent players to help in Varejao or Matt Barnes or Pietrus. You are acting as if the Magic's would've went the entire offseason without signing a decent player.

What the hell does that have to do with anything?

Ok well now i understand your argument. I guess were agreeing that Lewis was more important. But i just feel your not understanding how important he really is.

Imagine an Orlando Magic 2007 roster without Reshad Lewis. No More Millic and no more Grant Hill. I don't care how much some fans hate on Hill, but plain and simple he was our second leading scorer only behind Dwight. We lose Hill, your gonna seriously tell me Orlando goes deep into the playoffs with that roster??

And let's say we resign some of your highly rated free agents like Barnes and Varejao, which btw neither averaged over 10 ppg, (Mikael Pietrus wasn't a free agent, and even if he was he averaged 11) There not even going to contribute enough for Orlando to become a threat in the East. Now you keep saying that we need to win now and the Magic will see the promise land. But you really think that Matt Barnes who re-signed and Varejao are really gonna help us? If we would've got one of those two instead of Lewis, we'd be screwed. We wouldn't even make it to the playoffs.

I think we both agree we needed Lewis more than SVG, but your not understanding how much we really needed him. I've already been over that the Magic need to win now, due to our disappointing finish last year, our new head coach, and a new stadium deal. But theres another reason no one has even brought up yet.

Not only does the Magic organization need to show their fans and community there worth the million dollar stadium deal they needed to sign Lewis just to compete with the east! Pretty much any team in the East always has a shot to get that 8th spot in the playoffs. But think of all the eastern conference 2006 playoff participants. None of the teams have lost any talent.

Now think of the teams that didn't make the playoffs, but improved over this offseason. Boston adds Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett. The Knicks add Zach Randolph. Even the Bobcats improved by getting Jason Richardson. Not to mention the Heat will be healthy next year. So you really think that without Lewis,Darko, and Hill. You really think the Orlando Magic slip into that 8th spot?

    Not a damn chance.

Magic need to win now. They get a good scorer in Lewis. Great pickup by Otis. I have much respect for SVG, but Lewis was the more important deal here folks.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">What the hell does that have to do with anything?</div>
Well I just feel that in a debate you should know what team your arguing over. (Plus I really hate when people call them the Magics) lol

Magic's are a good team, they have a good coach why wouldn't they make the playoffs? You were saying if we didn't sign Lewis we would have another bad record. Magic's are a good 7th seed playoff team without Lewis. But again, Lewis was a key signing and will help Magic's.

Definitely atleast 8th seed. You're underrating Magic's. They have young talent in Jameer Nelson and Dwight. They would've definitely made the playoffs atleast. But yes Lewis will help a lot, especially being a former all-star. I am not saying that Lewis signing wasn't important, it was a big signing, but Magic's would've been a good team if they didn't sign him and got Varejao/Barnes. But yes, Lewis signing will boost this team big.

    Done. Good debate.
