Hey, you wanna be a sports writer? Same here. I'm going to try to get into Ryerson, a journalism college. I see all the guys here on the writing team, I wanna try to get on that, but I doubt it will ever happen. I'm trying to get into co-op with The Star or Fan 590.

I took Algebra 1a in eight grade. I took it again in 9th. I was supposed to have Algebra 1b this year, but they changed it so everyone who had algebra 1a takes one this year. So I'll be taking algebra 2 in my senior year. Let's just say me and math don't get along. [IMG]

I do good in other subjects though. [IMG]

Yeah I do. I've been offered a sports writing job by the Tampa Tribune but I had to wait until next summer to take it when I'm not so busy. I STRONGLY encourage you to join the writing team on here so you can gain experience and possibly get press passes to cover Raptors games. That means you'd get to interview the players, go into the locker rooms, and cover the games just like the professionals do. It's great and you gain loads of experience in the process. That's what I do with the Magic and it let me know that I really would love to do something like this for the rest of my life.

Yeah it was a job covering high school sports. I met the guy at the Poynter Institute I was talking about and showed him one of my JustBBall articles. He gave me his card and said they're looking for high school writers to cover different schools in the area and I should give him a call. I was going too but I was really busy this summer so I couldn't. I'm going into 11th grade and this is the year I start looking at colleges. I have heard that the University of Florida is really good when it comes to Journalism (the guy who offered me the job told me that when I asked him and some sites rank it pretty high). Northwestern is another great one but I can't really go out of state so my options are basically limited to University of Florida, University of South Florida, and the University of Central Florida.

In California, the most recognzied wrting schools are UC Davis and UC Merced. UC Merced is in my opinion one of the low UC's. Its the easiest to get into to next to UC Irvine. Davis on the other hand is as of a good college as UCSD, UCLA, and UC Berkley. The average GPA's entrance for UC Davis is like a 3.9. For UC Merced at 3.7 for those of you looking to go to a good college for writing.

I remember high school, everyone takes AP/Honors classes. Not to discredit anyone here though. I was in Honors English and even though it's not AP Level, I was one of the best writers in my school. Hope it doesn't sound like I'm bigging myself up, I'm just saying your grades isn't always indicative of your intelligence. Many stick-in-their-behind people I know thought they were better than everyone else because of their grades.

No, I think UC Riverside is the lowest UC, right? At least that's what my parents told me

Also, what's the difference between Honors classes and AP classes? Here at my school, we don't have Honors. It's either a regular class, or grade level class, like English 10, or Advanced English, or AP English (or something like that). We don't have Honors

^Ya, you are right, I forgot about Riverside, they accept from 3.5-3.6gpa as an average.

Honors is just Honors, a little harder. Maybe different books, harder tests and more homework

AP is a college class. College books and so on... it gives you college credits.

Very true. I've been in the honors track my whole time in HS but I'm going into my senior year now and I've only got AP English left. Grades are not indicative of intelligence, something parents don't understand. A lot of kids who are the "dumbest" kids in those honors classes get the best grades because they try so hard and give a lot of effort. Conversely theres a lot of kids who get bad grades in those classes who are easily in the elite group at the school but just don't give any effort. One of my friends didn't turn in any writing assignments in AP English last year but he KILLED every test and ICE and ended up with a C+ just by using his raw intelligence/ability and he got a 5 on the AP test.

I think thats why colleges use the SAT/ACT as a major indicator of ones intelligence when they are selecting who they want to go to their school. Grades are great but theres a lot of dumbshits who get a 4.0. Grades are indicative of 90% effort and 10% intelligence IMO.

The top five schools are usually considered to be Northwestern, Columbia, Wisconsin, Missouri, and North Carolina.

If you've got the grades to get into Northwestern, I'd go for it. I was enrolled there until I had this opportunity with Tulane come around. I was thinking very seriously about going into journalism myself back then.

At the end of the day though, there's really not much $$$ in covering sports, and once you get a family, you won't want to be away from them half of the year.

Very true. Like I said earlier, I had really ****** grades but really high test scores, and I got into most of the schools I applied to because of it. Test scores really are more important than they make them seem, because I slacked off my entire time in high school and still got into some great universities.
